Thank you so much for such a lovely tribute to Neil. I've been melancholy since I heard the news. Rush was always a constant presence in my life since I saw them in 1977. When my partner of 24 years passed away, I felt lost. Everything seemed so strange and different, and nothing seemed familiar anymore. I pushed myself to go to see Rush in concert about 8 months later, even though I had no desire to do much of anything. When they came out, my spirits finally lifted. I had been seeing Rush in concert before I ever met my partner, and seeing them up on stage, still together, still performing, was the one thing that seemed familiar and steady and constant. It was like a balm on my soul. For the first time since he passed away, I felt happiness again, and it gave me strength to push on through my grief. I learned on that night that I really did love those three guys, and I feel a great sense of loss over Neil's passing. I cried later that night after I heard the news. I once again feel that sense of loss. But I'm also heartened to know that his music lives on, and wonderful people like you two have discovered him and are moved enough by his work to pay tribute to his passing. Bless you both!

Before listening to your comments, I'll just say that Passage to Bangkok is basically a song about using cannabis. What can I say, it was 1976 and these guys were young rock musicians. A silly little thing, lyrically, the instrumental bridge is in my opinion a prime example of the kind of super tight arrangements and performance these guys were capable of, in the studio or live. Thanks for your reactions to all their work, I think your thoughtful analysis of Neil's lyrics is a tribute he would appreciate.

You guys were one of the first people I thought of when I heard the sad news because of your fun reaction w/ Priti to Limelight;) Btw; last night a Rush documentary was posted on KZbin & I learned alot - they loved to experiment which wasn't always popular! Neil was working for his Dad who owned a farm equipment store; & asked him if he should join Rush - his Dad said; 'yes, drumming is your passion'..,so humble. Plus they first toured with KISS as they're opening act!

Caress has always been my favorite overall Rush album, and hearing Lakeside Park for the first time n a long time and under the circumstances (no pun intended) solidifies my love of the record. The 'early Neil' lyrics are so fresh and poetic -- power isn't all that money buys......still be grey my way.....three travelers, men of Willowdale... -- and the musical interplay and overplaying is so obvious and joyful. They loved the album too and were hurt terribly by its tepid response. Without Caress, there is no 2112 and there is no Rush.

Back when this song, Vital Signs, came out, Computers and digital technology were really breaking in popular culture, often for the first time. For instance, many early-80's films would refer to computers in telling the story (think Matthew Broderick in "War Games"). So a song like Vital Signs showed that Neil was thinking/reading about this cutting-edge topic. He was trying to blend the computer terminology with human-centered ideas, to provide commentary on both via juxtaposition. He's so inventive!

On Vital Signs specifically: it is incredible, on all levels. Only now do I truly get the lyrics, with maturity and more life experience. Neil wrote these at, what, 26 or 27 years old? Gosh. His lyrics in one song can get to the heart of the matter and tell me more about humanity than many bands in a whole career. When I hear this song, I don't want the heavy outro to end. Astonishing 😍! The older I get (47 now), the more I love this band.

RIP Neil!! We’ve lost a lot of rock icons the last 5-10 years, this one is by far the hardest for me as a life-long Rush geek. I like the way you guys keep your cultural integrity and you both have really good musical taste. Be careful if you are "stay at home" parents. Kids will drain the life blood out of a turnup. I will not comment on the loss of Neil Peart because I still can't seem find the words. I will say that before his death, I question the concept of "dignity" as nothing more than a social abstract. Now I see that Neil's life was the personification of dignity and it's something we can all strive to obtain.

Ok so here is what inspired these songs, "Passage to Bangkok" - Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir", "Vital Signs" is about individuality and the pressures of conforming, heavily influenced by Reggae (music) and the band "The Police", "Madrigal" was inspired by the 1936 Frank Capra film "Mr Deeds goes to Town", and finally Lakeside Park is about the Town in Ontario Canada called Port Dalhousie where Neil grew up

Canada and Scotland celebrate the birth of Queen Victoria on May 24th, Victoria Day. It Mark's the unofficial start of summer similar to Memorial Day in the US. A Madrigal is "a part-song for several voices, especially one of the Renaissance period, typically arranged in elaborate counterpoint and without instrumental accompaniment. Originally used of a genre of 14th-century Italian songs, the term now usually refers to English or Italian songs of the late 16th and early 17th c., in a free style strongly influenced by the text."

I'm not religious at all 🌞🌞🌞. I don't know what happens to us after we die. I sincerely hope Neil has reunited with his daughter ♥️♥️❤️ and wife.

The 24th of May is when Victoria Day is celebrated in Canada, or to be more exact, the first Monday on or after it. Technically a celebration of the birth of Queen Victoria and subsequent monarchs, it is more importantly the first long weekend in, and generally considered the start of, summer and an occasion for opening cottages, camping, drinking beer, and so on. Lakeside Park in this case is probably in Port Dalhousie, where they have a preserved carousel you can still ride for CAD$.05 (a nickel), which plays a constant musical loop. Port Dalhousie is a suburb of St Catharines, a small city about 20 km away from Niagara Falls. His family had a business near there.

Tell people who aren't into Rush or any of "that kind" of music to take a step back and read Pearts lyrics without any of the music, tell them to treat it like a poem or a short story. His lyrics like those of Rodger Waters from the 70's on to the 90's are probably as relevant or even more so today than when they were written. And that was some deep prolific stuff. Cheers from the canadian Queen nut.

Hi from Exeter UK, Kevin Hunter. You are a lucky man to one day be able to sit or stand next to it, look over the lake and remember Neil in your own ways. Never been to Canada but I really want to, including of course that lakeside park. A stroll around Willowdale Toronto would be fun too. Though a proud Canadian of course, Neil spoke to me and many others globally. Great artists have no single country. All the best to you and your family, especially in these odd times.

Reaction 1 ... Well, it's about a trip... trips... with some refreshments... smoke it if you got it! In the 70s they all were smoking whatever they could get their hands on...

Hmm after listening to Lakeside Park, I wonder if musically it is left over from Fountain of Lamneth. It has a lot of the same qualities.

30 years ago how the words would flow with passion and precision, But now his mind dark and dulled by sickness and indecision, And he stares out the kitchen door, Where the sun will rise no more... Losing It - Neil Peart. I lost an idol, and we all lost a legend.
