Agreed! I came from the world of hard rock and classic heavy metal growing up in the 70s and 80s, I couldn't ignore the Fixx and Jamie inspired me immensely, such a creative player and he taught me that the guitar can be more than I knew!

I've loved Jamie since the early 80s, and The Fixx was my 80s band. Such a unique sound. I met them in 1991, and Jamie was SUPER nice to me! Great guitarist, and a great guy.

I was so excited to see Jamie West-Oram contributing his Big 5. He is such an incredible player and was a huge influence on my early electric playing. That influence is still there today. Would love to see more on Jamie, and players like him. Completely underrated!

JWO came up with arguably the most iconic guitar tones of the 80s - and I mean that with highest praise. It's one of my favorite sounds that has ever come out of an electric guitar. I've revisited The Fixx over the last year, and am surprised by how well their songs stand up. I'm glad to see they're still around and prospering. P.S. Great choice for "desert island disc". I second Jamie's motion...

Jamie is a perfect example of a player that serves the song. Great taste and tones!

He never plays a solo. The songs are simply loaded with great guitar parts. I love those explosive shimmering chords at the end of "Outside". Oram executes that track perfectly. Any other guitarist would have gone overboard with too much gain and saturation whereas Oram's tone is nearly crystal clear with only subtle breakup.

Oram is an absolute pro. His playing is totally devoid of ego or indulgence and he plays to serve the songwriting. I just listened to Phantoms and Reach The Beach recently and noticed there is virtually NO solos or anything unnecessary from all the musicians in The Fixx. All the tracks are so well written and recorded with no showboating.

I saw The Fixx live for the first time in 1983, hearing and seeing Jamie West-Oram playing the solo-part of "The Fool" made me begin to play electric guitar and become a professional. Thank you Jamie!

Jamie is one of my favourite players. In fact I modeled my style & sound from him back in the 80s. I can't believe that he has nominated Neil Young as a hero. I completely agree. NY was the reason I started taking guitar seriously back in the late 70s. 'Like a Hurricane' is one of the greatest solos ever. Both of these guys, Jamie & NY, are unique. 🥰

If you listen to Neil young's later electric guitar work it's actually amazing. Listen to weld, live rust, life, rust bucket, and countless more you'll come to agree with me. Then again, it's all a matter of taste. To me, even albums like everybody knows this is nowhere and anything with CSNY you'll hear how much electric guitar prowess Neil has.
