Ricky Gervais meets one of his comedy idols - Garry Shandling, creator of The Larry Sanders Show - and acts like a boorish tit through-out. The coffee moment in particular is fantastic. Not difficult to see why this was shelved for so long, bearing in mind Gervais' ego.

The interview was awkward because Gervais can't interview, therefore shouldn't be doing such shows. But he's determined to be thought of on the same levels as his heroes. Gervais was a rude little shit over the coffee thing - he's meant to be there to learn something about Shandling, NOT to boss him around and say "fuckin ell" to the camera. HE is the one with no manners.

Same idea here. Garry humiliated - actually toyed around with - him, just for fun. I think he disliked Ricky from the second they met, because Ricky was a boor. Ricky's accent sounds a bit posh for US ears, but it couldn't have went more beautifully if he, the chav boy from Reading was visiting a real nob family in the UK. The deal with this interview is Shandling gave strict instruction that they were going to shoot something for him first which was going to go on a dvd extras thing - before the interview with Grevais for the BBC was supposed to happen, and when Shandling arrived and quickly realized Gervais was not told this and they were going straight into the Gervais thing he decided to kind of sabotage it by playing it very low key - which was what he was going to do originally for his own thing. Shandling has since spoken about it saying it was probably was not fair to Gervais but ended up being interesting anyway..

Here's the real story: Shandling had been struck by the idea that Gervais would be a great addition. Though he’d never appeared on the show, Gervais had spoken openly about how Sanders inspired him. So Garry called Gervais and asked if he’d do it. The answer was yes, but Gervais also had a request. While he was in Garry’s home, could they also shoot his Channel 4 show? Shandling agreed, and all was well until the day of the dueling interviews, when wires got crossed. Garry says he assumed they would shoot the “visit” for the DVD extra first, because “that laid-back, not-on tone is good preparation for saying, ‘Let’s turn it on'” later, for Gervais’s special. But when Shandling walked into his kitchen, he realized instantly that Gervais thought the Channel 4 special was being shot first. Gervais was on-extremely so-and so were several cameras. Garry could have said something but wanted to see what would happen if he played it out. What if he stayed in the same low-affect head space he was in to do his DVD extras? Could he reach Gervais without explicitly identifying the problem? Could he bring Gervais’s energy level down? “It’s fascinating, really,” Garry tells me. “We both became locked into the shows we were each doing, and it became a bit of a boxing match. Because he’s trying to get me to do the show that he needs, and I’m trying to get him to do nothing. I was trying to pull Ricky into the moment.”

Yeah, this is definitely a joke. They are both comics who do 'awkward humor', and it just so happens that when they get together it's awkward? SHOCKING. Actually, it's hard to say if maybe they both didn't mesh well BECAUSE they were both trying to do awkward humor. But of the two of them, Gervais seemed more willing to get made fun of. Gervais is a hero.

@SamuraiPoptart I just saw it, as well, on British TV and thoroughly enjoyed it! As you RIGHTLY said "these guys are both masters of uncomfortable comedy"..and are so SUCCESSFUL that it is beginning to irritate me that so many did/do not get the joke! This is ( the WHOLE) interview CLASSIC DRY BRITISH HUMOUR!....amd Garry Shandling played his part so well, like not offerring the Coffee!:) DELIBERATELY!!!!

Seems Garry was mimicking the sort of character Ricky plays(Mainly David Brent ) and Ricky didn't get it. I don't think it was staged with Rickys knowledge..why shelve it if it's staged?.

I just feel they couldn’t work each other out. They both never understood what the other was doing comedically I think. It’s fascinating to watch them try and work each other out.

Shandling is funny! Ricky is a control freak! I like the way he gets worked up about not being offered a coffee. What about the camera crew for that matter? He just got pissy because he was being cleverly undermined by shandling!

+DylanHendrixClapton Well he was trying to see the funny side, but his irritation was mounting, and his ego was bruised. Actually feel for him more since I wrote that comment. This interview below sheds some serious light on the whole encounter. Pretty funny account. Oh god, this is just... physically painful to watch. I don't know what it is for me, I know Gervais is being painfully awkward and over-familiar ('Don't do it over the sink!' - who does he think he is, Shandling's mother?) but man, it's just upsetting for me to watch awkward stuff like this. It happened over five years ago, yet I still come away with the most awful feeling for all involved. Incredible clips. Really. Fascinating.

This is great, ricky is always hilarious. I'm not sure if this is real or not, it seems rickys style to try and get someone to act like this, but it flows too naturally. Either way it's great.

@meyster7 Well done M8! Thats the best explanation so far! It was NOT "scripted" but the 2 Comedy Genius's just improvised and have executed an hour so clever that they have FOOLED 80% of the Guys writing on here. TRUST ME I've watched comedy for 50 years nowand these Guys got on great! When Ricky looked at the camera to say he has collected many awards, that was "fed" to him by Garry!..and the phone calls " Really funny!

Gary's show was all about " beneath the facade" and he's so aware of his ego but Ricky is all facade here. And maybe the lack of self awareness of D Brent somehow seeped through

This was strangely edited by the uploader to present a very skewed narrative. . . making it slightly less stunning that so many of you seem to walk away from this thinking it was actually an act. Watch the entire thing for proper context, and you'll simply walk away shaking your head at the sad, angry fellow Garry has become. . this is what happens when a healthy and happy chap meets an old bitter sack of sad with a chip on his shoulder. At one point Garry goes in to fetch his boxing shorts, so he can discuss, for the camera, how he boxes and works out. . . completely irrelevant, and cringe-inducing. I assume has to be on quite a few drugs, to boot. Fascinating, in a psychological context. . . they couldn't be more opposite.

This interview kind of reminds me of the dynamic that Letterman had with his guests. At times he likes to put them on edge which is quite common among some interviewers. He will ask his guest about the thing that they for sure don't want to talk about like when he interviewed Paris Hilton and of course brought up some scandal to more or less make her feel uncomfortable and then someone like Joaquin Phoenix comes to the show and flips the script back onto letterman and making him feel uncomfortable. This was just a couple of examples that immediately came to mind. After making this comment, I'm not sure how many people will get these references. I guess I've watched too many interviews. I've heard Apatow comment on this part of his documentary and from what I got from it was that Garry was sincerely pissed that he walked into his own kitchen only to find cameras immediately rolling without being informed beforehand. Also, this may have all been already addressed in the comments below but I'm too lazy to sift through them all.
