Well Neil im in the same problem as before, bought a new phone and thought i had loadis of , finding out icloud says my storage id full, im not buying an storage. Cant believe ive filled the storage ul so fast, but its only 5g! Why doesnt Apple give more than 5? Its so u will be hooked to them Monthly! Hi, thanks for your kind comment and sorry to hear that you can't find your photos. Is your Google Photos signed into the correct Google account? I'm not sure this is the same problem, but Google once moved all my photos to a completely different account without me realising because I had opened a different google account on a different app. I'm sure you've tried this but it might be worth checking the Google photos Trash/Bin folder. Also if you go to takeout.google.com you can download all photos and videos that Google has stored on your account (if you go there logged into the correct account). Hope you manage to find your photos.

Yeah that option doesn't exist anymore. If anyone wants to just change the photos on your phone to storage saver more, the thing I did was copy my photos to my SD card, delete the photos in my albums on my internal storage and then backup the photos on my SD card while in storage saver mode. It doesn't do all of them but I cut down the 2 gb of photos from my phone to like 200 mb

So I watched your full video and followed step by step. Although I did delete some photos and videos I wasn't using obviously, did that before watching your video. So I did the final step of compressing my files let's see how it goes. I'll update Update: Thank you Neil. It worked. I now have 1,5GB of space now. And it only took a few minutes. Hi TheBossMan - thanks for the question: I have done a video on downloading, using a tool Google provide called Google Takeout kzbin.info/www/bejne/b524Xp2cibCZa9U This method is great for downloading everything in one go BUT it does remove all the hidden metadata from each photo: so the ISO, shutter speed, camera used etc etc etc. If you don't use these then this is best. Takeout does provide those details, but as separate files. If this isn't suitable, then the other way is to select all of your photos into one album on Google photos, then download the album. The downside to this is that it might take a bit of work putting everything into one album. Or you could manually select all photos for downloads, which also takes a bit of time. Hope this helps - good luck with the backing up!

The question I'm needing answered, is I want to delete all of my google photos from the browser, but not my phone, is it safe to do this when sync/backup is turned off, and after I'm done deleting my photos on google through the browser, do I turn the sync/backup on, will it clear everything anyway? Hi Marion Thanks for the kind comment and question. You can in theory delete the photos on your phone after they have been saved on your Google photos, but the danger is that your Google Photos can then become full and Google offer to charge money to look after them. The best way for me to save the photos is to transfer them to a memory stick, or hard drive for safety maybe using a laptop or computer. The best way to check if your Gallery photos have been saved to Google photos is to check the google photos site either on your phone or laptop or tablet browser. Go to: photos.google.com Click on the top right hand corner to make sure you are signed in to google photos. I hope this helps

Thanks so much! Finally some tech advice that works! I did find that in order to change the Google Photos backup account on Apple devices (phone & tablet), I had to uninstall the app and then reinstall under the new photos account. Thanks again! Recover storage only got me 4 GB back, but it was enough for me to get everything Google back working again so I could set up another account. It'd be nice to have an older Pixel that "can back up photos & videos in Storage saver quality at no charge" in Google Photos. That'd help a lot.

Hi Robin -thanks for the kind comment and question. Not sure this answers them but here are some thoughts: - I've naturally backed up all my original files from the phone to my hard drive/computer/memory stick for safety. Thinking if I need to ever blow these up to big photo print size I'll at least have the original size files. I've never done this and always do 4x6 prints from Google Photos, but completely understand the concern - You probably know this but if you compress your photos on Google Photos, it doesn't alter the original photo and video files which reside on your phone. - I find the Google Photos search function way to useful! So I use Google Photos for searching, and can then locate that file on my backup drive if needed. (I've never needed to do this though...) - I've seen a few times that when Google offers the paid subscription it offers to reinstate the Original size files, so they do seem to exist somewhere but I wouldn't rely on this... - Takeout.google.com allows you to download everything Google holds, all the photos and videos: I'm not sure if these are Original Size, might be worth doing a test? - The Partner Sharing works like a dream for me, and the shared photos say they are at Original Quality, even though the shared-from-photo was at Storage Saver quality... I'm not sure if this is the true original, but they don't take up any storage quota in the saved account... Hope something here helps. BTW Your channel is awesome! Thanks again

Yes it is really confusing. Hope you're able to turn off backup. And also there's a setting in settings so that if you delete something from Google Photos it doesn't delete it from your phone. Thanks for the kind comment.

Thanks for the tips Google truly is annoying sometimes and I've done everything from deleting hundreds of pics/videos, to uninstalling the app 3 times. I think the compression will work now 👍🏻

I hope this works. I've tried 18 other things and nothing made the slightest of difference. The biggest thing I'm learning is that is you change something in your photos setting within google it doesn't update everywhere. That's interesting.. I've been threatened with my gmail closing and storage being too large and I deleted thousands of videos and photos and nothing changed the size even after waiting over 48 hours to see if the numbers would change. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thank you. (on a side note - I was unable to get through the browser to change the convert storage option. I had to go onto my computer because it kept defaulting to the app version.) thank you!

Thanks for the kind comment and question. If you deleted thousands of videos - it might be that they have gone into your Trash/Bin folder in Google Photos. They are kept there for 30 days(!) before being permanently deleted. To fix this - go to google photos and find that Trash or Bin folder and select all to permanently delete. Later the photos seem to have synced again from my phone to google photos so my google storage is full again. Hi Auntie3333 - Thanks for the kind question, this is so frustrating. I think what's happening is that the photos are still on your phone, so the phone might be synching the pictures to the Google Photos. Thankfully, you have them backed up to your laptop drive, so in theory if you delete them on your phone, they should not resync with google Photos. If it were me, I would open the samsung 'Gallery' app - this accesses the photos without using Google Photos. Select the photos you want to delete by long-pressing them and click delete. This is really cumbersome though. Another way - the way I use - is to plug the phone into your laptop - which sounds as if you might have done already to download the photos. Open up the photos folder on the phone and select and delete them. It will be easier to select many photos and videos at the same time to delete. Alternatively, if it helps... There is an option in the Google photos app which you can turn on or off where if you delete the photo from the phone, it also deletes it from Google Photos library. In your Google Photos app on your phone, Click on your avatar on the top right hand corner Scroll down to photos settings and click on it Scroll down to "SD card access" and click on it Follow the instructions You're so close to resolving this - good luck!

Hi thanks for the kind comment and so sorry to hear this. There are some things you can try - and obviously try them quickly Go into google photos, either on the app, or better (because it's easier to see) on a desktop browser. Go into the recycle bin/bin/trash folder Google photos keeps things there, if they were deleted there - for 30 days. Fingers crossed they are there. There's also an archive folder in Google photos - it's on the left hand side bar - the 'clean up' may have only put the folder and pictures in there. You can restore from Archive folder. Other options: Go to takeout.google.com while logged into your account - quickly - and this is where you can download everything Google has stored on the account. Hi Sandrad, thanks for the kind comment and question. I do this so that I can see photos from the second account in the first, but with partner sharing it should work both ways round. I find it tricky but I think you have to partner share and accept from the first to the second account. And make sure there's no 'start date' when asked, so all photos are shared. Also, if you're doing this with the Google Photos app, make sure you're logged in on the right account with the avatar in the top right hand corner and then click on the "Sharing" tab on the bottom. That should show your "other" account as a big avatar at the top. Next to the avatar it should say "View all", click on that. It then brings up the other account's photos and a dialogue at the top saying "Auto-save pictures from xxxxxx" Click on the big "Get Started" button to start the partner sharing. I hope some of the above appears on your app. If it doesn't, start Partner Sharing from the beginning. In the Google Photos app, click on your avatar, Click on Photos Settings. Scroll down to Partner Sharing and click on it. That opens a dialogue to select the partner account. But for it to work, you need to go into the other account to accept the invitation, and invite the other way round. I think I need to make a video showing how it works! Forgive me for Google not making this simple... Thanks again.

I created a new account from scratch... once you sign in I think the Google Photos app 'remembers' so it's easy to flick between the two by clicking on the avatar picture in the top right hand corner: that brings up a mini menu of recent accounts for you to choose from. Thanks for sharing this info. I wanted to ask about saving photos in original size on a hard drive. Can they be added/uploaded to a laptop that doesn't have g photos on it or can only use hardrive, plus I'm guessing these pics need to be uploaded to HDrive/Ltop before you shrink to storage saver size.........and can U up/ld pics to HD/LT and still have them on ur mobile (shrunk after uploading? I have two google accounts n thought I could use both to free up storage coz the photos taken using one G acc doesn't get added to the other which I kinda thought meant there were two G photos apps W 2 storage spaces, but I don't know how to transfer pics over, the few crappy phones Ive got don't have all my backed up pics in the g photos apps but chunks of months are missing in both phones but google has saved the same pics that are in my pHs gallery app as well. G Lens got removed on all phones, I can't use Gmail, other apps or share iNFO/send items to apps, email, drive etc so I'm too nervous I'll lose my photos again as somehow 45k backed up G photos since 2005 disappeared twice and I still don't have all my saved screenshots, videos, animations and many months kapoofed . Sorry that was a long winded headache .. but I thought it might be helpful to explain as my last suggestion from someone was to do a factory reset which freaked me out knowing I'd lose Iit all. Thanks for not visually rushing through the steps to take and saying clearly what to do.

Hi Tash Thanks for the kind question. Hope I'm understanding it correctly. The photos on your phone are original size. The shrinking is just something that happens within Google Photos in the cloud. So when you backup your phone to a harddrive or laptop (or, ideally, both), you're just copying the original size photo files to a folder on the hard drive. Also to complicate things slightly, there are different folders on the phone (if it's andoid) for the screenshots etc as well as the camera photos. If you do Partner sharing you can backup the photos to whatever account you share to, and use that as your photos account. You can also download all the photos/videos on Google Photos to your hard drive by using Takeout.Google.com I'm not sure I've understood your question properly but hope something here might help. thanks again and good luck with your google storage.

Hi Neil. Great video. Thank you. I've followed the steps and it's backed up all the photos & videos and now saying that this account is nearly full too. If I was to set up another one and click on back up, is it going to then back up all the same photos again? How do I get it to just do photos going forward if its already saved the others. Sorry for the long comment. Just trying to figure it all out 🙂

Hi Emma Sorry for the confusion - If it were me, I would backup the photos on my phone to my computer, or hard drive or memory stick and then delete them off my phone. If only to free up storage space on my phone! Then I would backup and sync any photos from then to the new account. I have also found a way to backup those new photos and videos by Partner sharing them to my original account, which doesn't take up any additional space on the original account and means I can search everything in one place and even delete things from my new account knowing that they will be saved in the original account. SO sorry to hear this and thanks for letting me know Mane. It's difficult to tell from here at what stage you're at in the process - that sounds really strange that it is offering backup but not sync. Forgive me, I can't imagine what is causing this. I thought that it might be because the account is still over its limit, but then it wouldn't be offering to backup. I'm so sorry I can't think of a fix at this stage. Is your account maybe a Google Workspace account rather than a personal account? Hope we can find a fix.

Hi sorry if this was asked. Im realizing that iCloud doesn’t help with storage if phone doesn’t have space. And once you delete a photo from your phone it’s not saved in iCloud Google photo isn’t the same concept is it? I can delete my photos from my phone and just go to google photos When I need to look up a clients photo from years ago? This is what I’m hoping to do.

I just came across this video, and I'm nearly done, but I was just wondering if compressing my photos and videos reduces the quality quite a bit, or do the photos stay basically the same. Will it be quite obvious after I compress all my photos and videos? Thanks so much for this video though.

Thanks for the kind question. For me, I can't notice the difference, but for safety I downloaded everything in one go using Google's Free Google Takeout site. So the originals are all backed up on my external hard drive. I never use it though because the photos and videos - to my eyes seem unaffected. Your mileage may vary. If you're super concerned, definitely get a backup and maybe experiment by turning on storage saver in your upload settings so the next picture will be at storage saver size... upload it.. and set your Google photos upload settings back to original and compare the two pictures or videos. That's a great question Jocelyn. I would download all the original size photos first for safety, either directly from the phone, or by downloading them from Google using their takeout.google.com - OR "Export your data" in "Settings" in Google Photos on desktop. Google says once you compress them, you can't undo this process, but I've seen messages offering to convert them back to original size both on desktop google photos and in the app (along with an ad to pay for the Google One storage). So the short official answer is no, you can't. But I have totally seen Google offer to restore the pictures to Original size. But I wouldn't trust this and would keep a local backup somewhere else, if it were me. Hope this answer isn't too vague or helps, and good luck with your storage!
