IT crowd inspired The Big Bang Theory and it's so interesting to see the main difference: The US show needs humanity and redemption in the end, as well as a real world anchor in Penny to show you what a normal person looks like in compaison. The brits don't care, it's way funnier if the "normal person" turns out as weird as everbody else, and all of them stay weird until the end.

You are not meant to like Douglas - he's an appalling character who does appalling things, much like his father. I mean he's destined to spend eternity in hell with the likes of Hitler. It's a mystery to me why somehow his appalling behavior is seen by some as the series saying this is a good thing and complaining about it. Maybe bad characters don't feature in US and other countries comedies much, prehaps actors from those countries don't want to do those roles, which is why British actors get all the bad roles in American films.
@stussysinglet2 жыл бұрын
Douglas will likely grow on you by the end of the series .. he’s as enjoyable to watch as the 3 main characters.. he is a horrible human being but he’s also completely dim witted and stupid with a few redeeming moments so you sort of forgive him a bit…

I don't get it when people don't think Douglas is funny. He is by far the most entertaining character of the show. I man, neither Roy nor Jen are all that likable. That's not really the point of the show. It's their antics that are funny, and Douglas is all antics.

it would be actually a nice "special" of characters you really can't stand and why (my all time "favourites" are: the girlfrend of Dexter - Rita, and very similar type, the girlfriend of Nate from Six Feet Under - Lisa; and also the mother of Saga from Broen... I think I would be more willing to accept to my life a serial killer than any one of these :D )

I enjoy most of this series, but I do find some of it unfunny and sometimes offensive. And to you people who will call me 'woke' or whatever, or say that comedy shouldn't have limits, come off it. Everybody has things they find offensive, it is human nature. I don't think Douglas really adds anything to the show for me, and I do love Matt Berry in What We Do In The Shadows, for example.
@papamurrth12 жыл бұрын
To be fair Neil, you do keep an open mind, and it's only on this re-watch have I come to see the problems with Douglas' character. He does have some moments, and obviously it's a cartoon representation we aren't to take seriously, but seeing it from someone else's point of view seeing this for the first time has made me re-evaluate it
@anomalysakawendy50962 жыл бұрын
I don't think Douglas is that funny either. It has nothing to do with him being vile or cringe. I enjoy a lot of awful characters, like on It's Always Sunny, but Douglas is just too loudly & flatly one note for me. My favorite episode this season is 'Are We Not Men?'... laughed so, so much. That there was zero Douglas in it... is not a coincidence. Not enjoying Douglas is as valid a view as enjoying him. It's all subjective.

There's a few good episodes coming up, especially the Countdown one, but also one with Douglas that's pretty transphobic, which unfortunately isn't much of a surprise coming rom Graham Linehan. Most of the show holds up really well, so its always a bit jarring when jokes/episodes have aged poorly, but luckily they're few and far between.
