Your an inspiration to all aspiring landscaping technicians. I live over in Lufkin and frequently visit Trees USA for my clients too they have excellent plant material every time I go. I am trying to source out the “Unicorn” Mexican plum trees for a client right now she wants 6” caliper trees I found some up in Waxahatchie but they are 3500 each… ouch great videos please keep making more brother and keep it up looking real good.

I have both varieties, like them both a lot. Oakland aka Oak Leaf are more deer resistant, grow more vertical, not as wide as the Nellies. They have shiny bright green foliage, quite nice.

I'm thinking of planting Nellies for a privacy screen, but my back yard is narrow - 25' of grass and 10' of patio = 35' total. Are the Nellies easy to keep at 10' width? I don't mind pruning. I have an American holly that is super easy to prune because it's such a slow grower. I know the Nellies are much faster growing. What's your opinion? Should I try for the Nellies?

Great video!If you were planting the Nellies as a screen , but along a fence line how far from the fence would you plant them?
@ejohnson31313 жыл бұрын
It’s so strange that the owner would want to block his views of the lake by covering those windows. These hollies get really sparsely branched growing in so much shade, but I hope they do well. It’s nice to see the dark green foliage.
@williamgray3740 Жыл бұрын
Fill hole with water first allow water to absorbed and place tree in hole and add soil wet as you go and top off with hardwood mulch at depth of 3 inches. And soak the mulch .the hollies need room to grow 12 wide so for a screen space at five to six feet apart so there is air circulation.

Lots of good planting techniques here. I too like a bit high, and especially favor some root cutting. Keeps the roots from continuing to circle. I have cut slits as you do here, and it seems to help. Also gets these big plants out of the pots easily. I now tend to shave the root ball all the way around to ensure roots come out straight. Not sure it's better, just what I do. Anything is better than nothing, per roots. Have you tried different root-cutting techniques.

Great job. That's a lot of hard work. I have a 8 ft nellie stevens that I had put in1 years ago but wind blew it over in the fall and it didn't look good after the winter. So I cut it down 1.5 ft and I'm going to move it. I will cut the root ball like you did. Thanks for the video. What's the purpose of planting high like that?
@peternyc5 ай бұрын
Excellent video. How did you plant so close to the existing trees like the crape myrtles? Did you have to cut the roots of those trees? Seems like you planted the Nellies very close. How has it worked out so far? Will they stay smaller because you planted them so close?
@crixustreeturf3 ай бұрын
Actually thats a good question. honestly cutting the roots of the existing crate myrtles isn't ideal thats not what you want to do. we planted a lot of those hollies high.

How far apart do you plant Oakland hollies for a privacy screen? I can wait years but I don't want gaps when full grown. Thank you
@crixustreeturf10 ай бұрын
Well of course it depends on how long you want to wait. Sometimes I have clients that aren’t willing to wait they want the screen now. Mature width is 15-20 ft. So I would plant maximum 6’ apart that’s just my opinion. They grow in zones 6-9….

hi minimum distance to a mortar fence on oakland? willing to prune. Distance between plants? want privacy but retain cone shape for that xmas tree look. how far do they stick out in the front if planted near mortar fence?
@feleciawallace84202 жыл бұрын
Last year -- I had one 5-gallon Oakland Holly tree installed in my backyard in the middle of the yard but toward /near the fence, far enough away for the 15-20' width spread that I'm expecting in a few more years, or up to 10 years perhaps full growth. I believe these Nellie Stevens and Oakland Hollies that the landscape company just installed were planted much too close together, but for now it's ok because of instant view obstruction, but within 3 to 5 years there might cause a problem of overcrowding/overgrown which will call for heavy pruning.... But the homeowner may have sold the house and moved-on elsewhere.
@Frank0202 жыл бұрын

That’s crazy these home owners want to block off their beautiful windows with Hollie’s. Why can’t they just plant the Hollie’s around the basketball court itself. I would of preferred that.
@Really108012 жыл бұрын
Because most homeowners don't realize what they are doing until it's too late... then they rip it all out and start over. Like people that use Spruces and Pines that grow to 100' when they need a 6' screen.
