The Portuguese use both! Cumpleanos would be for individual birthdays where the Aniversario is used for milestones like 50th or 75th birthday and of course marriage or other significant things. Its best to figure them as synonyms. Using it as an marriage aniversery she would of said them same to mamae.Her parents and my grandparents are both from the Azores and they used both as such. +Joe Gillis I think it's because in the pop industry, Nelly Furtado offered a sorta new, unconventional style of pop songs. During her "Whoa, Nelly" and "folklore" eras, she had this neo-hippy kinda vibe going on and you never really saw that in pop music so I think that worked in Nelly's favor.
