Nelson RainTrain Traveling Sprinkler Disassembly and Maintenance

I really like these traveling "tractor" style sprinklers, but like everything that has moving parts, theyt do need to be maintained. A little cleaning, a little grease. Not much required, but these sprinklers aren't cheap, so a few minutes spent cleaning grime might save a lot of money replacing parts.

FYI, pretty much all the internal gears can be 3D printed. I had the exact same gear you did lose teeth and 3D printed one swapped it out, works fine.

I haven't used my tractor sprinkler in about 3 years and bought it used 15 years ago. I wanted to use it this week for a long piece of new grass. Hooked it up but the arms wouldn't swing. I used this video to look what I needed to do to repair this. The brass potion had old sticky grease on the shaft. I wiped it off and applied silicon grease. It's light weight and very slippery. Hooked it bask up and works like a champ.

You skipped the most important part. I believe you had to go down the discharge wormscrew drive with a hex wrench to detach it? Also, does the shut-off valve in the bottom actually just separate, as shown? It's a better video than most. Thanks.

Your video was very helpful & easy to follow. I'm going to try to fix mine that we buy for $10. We have hard water, thinking the rust is binding up the gears. Would a rust removal help the gears of rust is a problem?..

I have two of these sprinklers. One is old the other will be the second summer I've had it, purchased brand new. In both of them the plug on the bottom that shuts them off when they go up the ramp blew out. Everything else works fine. One plug is lost I have the other one. How can I make it stay in ??

One of the arms on mine does not spray out water. I took it off, ran a pipe cleaner through and ran water from the faucet through so it doesn’t seem to be clogged. Any ideas what the issue would be? Thank you!

How do you stop water leaking out where the hose attaches to the sprinkler? I have added a rubber washer inside the fitting to stop leakage without any success. Water continues to leak by and tractor won’t travel.

Make sure the white shut-off on the bottom is pulled out. If it is pushed in, even partially, water won't flow through the sprinkler. If that isn't the problem, then make sure there isn't any obstruction in the sprinkler itself, take the arms off and blow them out, etc. And if it is still leaking a lot, check the washer you can see at 7:58 in the video, it might need to be replaced. Hope that helps!

My stopper function does not work very well on most occasions. Can you post a video showing how to adjust the stopper so that when sprinkler goes over the stopper ramp, it actually stops operating.

Mine has what I consider an excessive amount of water dribbling out the bottom of the sprinkler, and therefore not spraying out the spray arms. The result is a lot of water pooling and draining along the track of the sprinkler. (The spray arms are spraying, and the sprinkler is moving forward, but not as fast perhaps as it should.) Is this normal?? Any ideas how to correct it? Thank you!

Same issue. Pouring out the bottom. The arms are clear of debris.

I figured it out. The white button on the bottom was depressed. It is normally what stops it from moving at the end of its path.

Replace the drive motor. The plastic housing is cracked from freezing.

I would try a liberal amount of food-grade silicone grease in, around, above, and below the areas near and adjacent to the white washer. Mine is on season 3 and is beginning to squeak. After watching dudes vid of it's disassembly I think this is the ticket

Thanks for the vid. My Rain Train is on season 3 and is beginning to squeak. When I watched your vid I figured out that the squeak seems to be coming from near that white washer at the bottom of the rotating arm holder. I am going to use food-grade silicone grease which I would strongly recommend bc dino based grease will make most if not all plastics granulate.
