Nematodes for Vine Weevil: control and treatment

In today's video we're discussing the 'PROS AND CONS OF NEMATODES' that are specifically aimed at controlling the larvae of the dreaded Vine Weevil beetle - a pest that eats leaves, but even worse, it's larvae feast on only roots, which can be devastating when they're trapped in a plant pot! We look at some of the advantages (pros) and then the disadvantages (cons) of nematode use, when compared to a systemic chemical treatment.

Just used Nematodes for the first time after seeing Vine Weevil larvae in a large Fig tree in a pot, I overwinter in my Conservatory. After three days, adult vine weevils have significantly slowed down from over ten a day emerging to one today. I've got everything crossed. Downside of the chemical Bug Clear is it cannot be used on edible plants.

I used nematodes last year....seemed to work....but then I spotted a dreaded vine weevil a few days ago....just used them again tonight....will give it a second go at the end of the summer....damn these vine weevils!

Yeah they’re a pest that’s for sure. I give all my plants a treatment every spring just as a preventative measure as they’re so damaging.

In the outdoor garden I never use any any artificial chemical, both because I don't want to damage nature and because I want to build up the ecosystem of my garden in order to reduce pests. I must say it's more difficult in a greenhouse or in the home, where you can't easily keep beneficial insects or animals and where pest pressure is much higher. I've only ever used nematodes for vine weevil for this reason. They are an absolute scourge, all right.

Yeah pretty much the same here. This last few years I've only used glyphosate weed killer (as we live right under 200 year old sycamore trees and every year get about 10,000 young trees popping up everywhere!) so I've recently purchased a guaranteed organic weed killer instead. When I read the bottle it says, 'does not kill roots'! I kid you not. The greenhouse is impossible to keep pests out of as it's wide open for several months. But I'll keep looking for alternatives to chemicals.

They're just getting going now - this was filmed a couple of weeks back. I'm looking forward to seeing some blooms for the first time as last year the new plugs I bought struggled to get a move on.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 yea plugs or starter plants is always a hard to get going, either start with seeds or buy bigger plants that got a bigger chance of survivel. Same goes for orchids, any plants really. Keep up the good work.

@@Royaliize I'll do my best. I wonder if the Streps are struggling to push through the little root bag they are grown in. I've started snipping it on any I buy just in case!

@@Grow_Up_Man55 yea grow bag, i always remove them so the roots can go where ever they want to. Its like planting a tree in pot. It will never grow as fast or tall vs a tree in the ground. Its the same with some phals, i always clean them all the way into the plant itself.

If you mean to use both nematodes and chemical treatments - I would expect the chemicals would kill the nematodes too, so probably an expensive risk.

Will the BUG CLEAR kill off the NEMATODES?

This is a 3 year old video so I can't remember what's in it exactly. But if you're using both treatments than yes, I guess the chemical could kill the nematodes. I don't know why both would be used simultaneously, and if that's what I said then I was wrong!😁 Maybe I was at the point of frustration where I was just chucking everything at them. You'll do practically anything to stop the plants from dying. These days I just use the Bug Clear Ultra and it works 100% of the time for me.

These creatures are hide and seek pros, like I commented on your other Video I inspected the whole plant with big torch whilst I had the pot submerged in water for 48 hours. I read the grubs would float to the surface and any adults hiding in the pot will climb up out of the water, well I didn’t find anything and I know it’s still in there because new leaves are getting munched, crazy. I did just see there are traps and I think there are nematodes in the traps, not sure how long that lasts.

If you're using bug clear on flowering plants...be aware it will also kill the bees that go to these plants..

It’s in an enclosed greenhouse - bee free zone.
