My indoor cyclamen (NE Texas, USA) has been blooming since I bought it in February. It even bloomed through our hot Texas summer. I have watered it and deadheaded the seedpods. It's not showing any signs of going dormant. Will it continue to bloom through the colder months October through April?

For the water method, I usually put the cutting in a glass on the kitchen window sill. It usually only takes a couple of weeks to propagate. When there's noticeable roots I pot the cuttings up. Usually a few cuttings to a pot. I tend to do that for cane Bergonias. I have generations of Bergonias that way. My Mum and Grandmother used to do the same. I still have some that they potted up.

I fertilize my Nepenthes quite often. Once in the month I dillute tropical house plants liquid fertilizer for the roots (around 120µS) and on the leaves every week (around 150µS, altough you could double it and do it every second week, i like to do it weekly but more dilluted so that i can react faster if its too much). And every once in a while I also feed the pitchers (the same fertilizer but around 200µS. The pitchers itself can have 800 or even above 1000µS if they caught a lot of insects, so more than 200 could be possible). I have doing this a while now and will start doing this throughout the whole autumn and winter (the plants now grow inside under strong growlights, high humidity and temperatures). And so far the plants are growing extremely well. Combined with the good LED and high temperature and humidity, they produce a new leaf every few weeks.

Yesterday I bought a Miltonia at a local grocery store. It was marked as a Miltoniopsis. Thanks for setting me straight! I am going to grow her in my home, as my area (Eastern Washington State. Zone 6) has very hot, dry summers (75f/24c to 104f/40c) and cold, snowy winters. She seemed quite dry, so I did water with a weak orchid fertilizer solution. I put her about 10 feet from a west facing window with filtered light. I am going to wait about a week to re-pot, as she is now in a tall pot with drainage holes on the bottom only of the inner pot. I hope I can keep her alive in my house. Wish me luck!

Just throwing ideas out here but have you thought about getting a plumber in to extend your house central heating by adding a radiator in your greenhouse that’s part of your home central heating? You could install a thermometer in the greenhouse instead of your house to maintain a 18 degree temp. Obviously it would take some effort and money but if it could be done it might be a good long term solution. No idea if it’s possible but just an idea that popped into my head. 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 23 күн бұрын
Yeah I'm sure that would be good if it could be done. Although I imagine there would be a considerable outlay to set that up. I'm no plumber, but I doubt you'd be able to bury central heating pipes in order to run them to the greenhouse. It comes down to comparing the cost of running on an electric heater compared with the cost of setting this idea up - and I think it's highly likely to be less expensive to just use the electric heater. The cheapest and easiest solution (apart from simply growing hardy plants in the first place!) is to improve the insulation. Since I set up the bubble-foil insulation my heating bills have plummeted.
@steveandsherilyn7543
@steveandsherilyn7543 24 күн бұрын
Another idea would be to heat it up with a caravan gas heater which you could pick up from a caravan breakers yard, they chuck out the heat. You would need to use bottled gas, but it would be cheaper to use that than electric heaters. The modern caravans use ducting to blow warm air around the caravan and are very efficient and cost-effective. You could get all the hardware from a caravan breakers for little money.
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 23 күн бұрын
I did price this up but the bottled gas (at UK prices) was equal if not more costly than electricity. Another issue would be the continual need to monitor the gas bottle levels - something you can't really do with any accuracy. If it ran out during a frosty night I could lose a lot of plants. Might work well for some people depending on their setup.

Have you seen those little diesel heaters they use in camper vans? They are inexpensive to buy and to run (red diesel), you would need to figure out a way of getting the exhaust through to the outside, but you could replace a pane of glass with some wood and put a hole in it to pop the exhaust through to the outside. Since they are designed for camper vans they are clean burning with no dangerous fumes to worry about.

I appreciated the advice on Zygopetalum culture in the North of England,as I am in the Manchester area myself. I couldn't believe my luck when I found a Zyopetalum in Tesco. So I'm not sure of its variety. I'm reliant on window culture as I don't have a greenhouse. Winter temperatures are between 55 f and 65 f minimum.I have various orchid types. Phalaenopsis flower in these winter temps. So it must be warm enough for them. I haven't completed a full winter with the Zygopetalum.So next winter will be a challenge.

Yeah more and more previously 'rare' orchids are coming into the local shops. Bent's garden centre (which I'm sure you're familiar with) has several orchids for sale - all differing genera. Window culture is fine - greenhouses aren't great places for many intermediate to warm growing plants without spending a lot on insulation and heating - like I do!

@@Grow_Up_Man55 Yes. I have heard of Bent's Garden centre. I didn't know they sold different genera orchids though. I most certainly will be checking those out!! I did grow orchids in the greenhouse back home at my late Mum and Dad's. The fluctuating temperatures meant that I learned how to kill most of them off rather than grow them. They respond better to windowsill culture or rather I do.
