Hi, I was a movie extra when this was being made outside on a city street. It was a cold, bitter night (a night shoot) and we had to pretend it was Summer lol. I've done those a few times though I stay away from them now lol. Reasons outside shoots can be nasty: You often have to pretend that it's a hot Summer day when it's actually freezing cold! That means you wear shorts, short sleeves, sandals and at times sunglasses. One poor girl was so cold the 3RD A.D. (3RD Assistant Director who works with the movie extras, also known as the background performers...the 1ST A.D. works with the Director of the movie), sent the girl inside often. She was about 16 and tiny with not a spare ounce of fat on her body, poor thing. I lent her my thin Summer sweater but it didn't help much. - There're tricks to working outside in the cold and pretending it's Summer. 1) You wear thin slacks (you can get away with it as they LOOK thin lol) BUT you wear thick skin colored stockings or tights underneath to help keep you warm! 2) You wear summer flats as they're warmer than sandals and "Wardrobe" who oversees everything people wear, allows it, so long as they're a pale summer color. 3) You wear layers of thin shorts or thin short sleeve tops to keep warmer. 4) You ALWAYS wear your hair down and never in a pony tail. 5) IF you can get away with it and it looks real, you can wear a realistic wig to keep warm. Some movie and T.V. sets allow it and some don't. Depends on where they put you in the scene. 6) One time about 12 of us women had to be on a posh outside penthouse balcony literally on the 26th floor, holding wine glasses, hair up and dressed in summer cocktail dresses. It was winter and so windy! They had to shovel the snow off the balcony first! We'd wear clean green garbage bags under the short dresses to keep warm (it works). The men had it good as they were in nice suits and tuxes! Plus they wore winter socks in their dress shoes...didn't have to wear high heel shoes or high heel fancy sandals! There are other tricks, but this comment is getting WAY TOO LONG lol! No fair! It was about Nelson Mandela being feted by the American government once he was out of the African jail. The man playing Nelson Mandela could have been Nelson's twin! * Pretending it's winter on a hot summer's day is no fun either! I was an extra on a Steven King movie and I had to pretend it was winter during a terrible snow storm. It was actually hot and humid! Try wearing winter boots, winter coats, winter mitts, scarf and hat on a hot summers day for hours! Lots of stories. Being a background performer is always interesting. Oh by the way, we only make minimum wage lol. Have a great day!
