I've had this amp for a month replacing an Audiolab 6000a and driving Polk R200's. The first thing I noticed was the open, airy, and yes holographic sound this amp puts out. Nemo is not steering you wrong! Second, the unit has the power to really dig deep. It absolutely monsters the 6000a in the bass dept. I love the tone controls, remote is well done, features for the price are unmatched. I started running it with the balanced inputs and noticed an increase in top end clarity. I second Nemo's opinion on not needing the companion amp to double the power, this amp already sounds great. Unlike Nemo I did not find the midrange to be pleasing. At least certain aspects of it. The amp sounds fine for music and generally quite exciting and fun to listen to. But watching KZbin video's I sometimes hear a muffled sounding lower midrange (male voices). It's funny how it can sound fine with one video but sound much less intelligible with another. Also there is an elevation in the lower treble with extended S-sounds. Not quite sibilant but also not natural either. I can actually here this listening to Nemo. Some of this could be a combination of my SMSL SU-10 DAC (warm upper bass) and the R200's (peaky at 1,100hz) but to my ears the Audiolab 6000a and Rotel A11 Tribute have much more natural sounding midranges in the same setup. When I buy another amp it will be to fix this problem. But in the meantime I'm going to be having a lot of fun with this amp. I highly recommend it for it's exciting presentation of music and feature set. I think that most people that order it are going to be surprised how good it is. One additional note to add is that in order to import this unit (ships from Germany) I had to provide my SSN to DHL. This is a new requirement from Customs that was just put in place a few months ago. Previously only commercial importers had to do this, now it's everybody. I took a week to make sure this was legit and eventually provided it. The amp was cleared by customs within an hour and moving again. So don't be surprised about this potential hassle. Well worth it in the end though! TLDR: Huge, spacious, exciting sound for music. Not the best tonality for general use. Possible importation hassles.

@@ThomasAndStereo I've only ever used it as a power amp. I generally don't consider built in DAC's to be good enough for my ears. If it helps I'd just go ahead and get the SA40. You can use it's DAC and if it doesn't do it for you upgrading later. The amplifier alone justifies it's price for sure.

@@lloydbrown3223 I was really surprised how much more the R200's had to give when I hooked up this amp. They are the cheapest part of my system but they have scaled up with every new piece of gear so I have kept them. That said now that I have this amp, I think upgrading the speakers next is in order. I think ordering the amp will cure your upgradeitis for a while! It will definitely wake your system up. Speakers first or amp first? Buy whichever one you know you want for sure. That way you can get to know it's character and use that experience to guide the second purchase. Happy listening.

The PEQ, Sub management, HDMI & USB functionality has really perked my interest. The value for money seems too good to be true and I have my reservations about how such a low costing unit will perform. Regardless of performance, I really like what Wiim are bringing to the table. We have to remember $5k amps like the Pathos Inpol Remix MK2 exist and of course will bring out even more with the Celan Rev3, but in the price range of around $1k the SA40 is one of the better options for the Celan, only other thing I can think of for an absolute winning combo is the CHoco amp but you'll have to give up any and all features since its a purist piece. Hello Nemo, I always liked your reviews, particularly THIS ONE on the SA 40 because I've been considering replacing my IOTA SA3 (which I've now had for three years) but haven't seen much out there in the $1K to $1.5K range that would provide a "good/ substantial" improvement over it, and based on your review/ comments, this SA40 looks like the ticket for "me/ my needs". BTW the Outlaw might be good/ slightly better than the SA 40, but I can't get past its looks (and that's coming from a guy who places 70% on function/ 30% on form when it comes to stereo equipment).

Hi bro, around this price for an amp this is a pretty damn good one and I think it would pair nicely with the F500SP for sure!! I don't know of anything else for the same price that's better, the next logical upgrade in sound quality would be the CHoco EMEI but you'd have to give up ALL the features to get that, if you want the same SQ of the CHoco plus all the features you'd need to get something like a Hegel H190 and now you're at 4x the price of the SA40 so in conclusion the SA40 is a solid option :)

Still looking for an amp to compliment it and thinking one of these, Choco Emei,, Yamaha RN1000, and now I feel this Iota VX SA40 also should be considered. Perhaps you haven’t heard them all but of the ones you have heard, if money wasn’t the reason for getting it , but rather sound was, which would you personally prefer to compliment the DWX and why? Also if I need a separate DAC and Streamer any recommendations in your humble opinion? Thanks so much and always truly appreciate your honest and forthcoming reviews. Have a terrific day my friend.

I have not heard the Yamaha, this SA40 should pair well, the CHoco would be a step up from the SA40 but costs more and is a purist pieces so you won't get any features. Cost no object, CHoco for sure as long as you don't mind not having tone controls or sub-out. Reason is simple, its refinement and SQ overall is more on par with something double its price, the CHoco is a hidden gem! As far as dacs & streamers there are so many at every price point. I personally use the bluesound node with an LHY PSU kit, and the long discontinued ares2 dac. If I were you I'd use the internal DAC for now and just add bluesound node. The Cambridge MXN10 is also pretty good. IotaVX also has their own streamer but I don't have any experience with it. Laiv is working on a streamer too and after hearing their Harmony DAC I have high hopes for it but given the price of their DAC I think the streamer will not be cheap.

@NemoPropaganda

most internal DAC are good enough in my opinion but of course you can add an external for those who want to upgrade later. The CHoco is a purist piece with zero features, nothing cheaper than the CHoco can compete with the CHoco. The CHoco competes with amps that are double its price. The price you pay to have such great sound at the low price of the CHoco is giving up any and all features, it's a completely different product for the absolute audiophile purist where the IotaVX SA40 is a full featured amp.

At this price, given its power rating of 150/300 watts into 8/4 ohms and its connectivity, it seems to offer the most for one's buck. The latest darlings seem to be Iota, Emotiva, Outlaw, Advanced Paris and possibly a few other offering for most people as an end game or long term kind of amp. I have looked at stuff higher priced and at this point in my life I do not want really heavy beasts and don't need the power (in the hundreds of watts). I own a hegel and while its nice, eyeing amps which are "smaller and lighter". Seems there's alot in the class D area and that would need a pre, so more money and devices. Could be this is the last decade for alot of class AB type amps given the economy, interest and such? Personally I expect some consolidation with the best companies offering value in price and performance remaining. So, considering some options at this point. I will wait to see how Iota gets on with consumers as to reliability and service. The specs, connectivity and the ability to present a holographic stage (which implies great separation) really interests me. So, its an amp I would consider especially as its only about 13 inches deep and 22 lbs. The latest I am going to test out is the V/Alstine CA-1 which I picked up used for a price I couldn't say no to. It has gotten alot of hype and while I can usually read through hype and triangulate on whether some gear would "suit" me, it seems I have to try it out. If it performs as well as the Hegel and corrects artifacts given the speakers I currently have, I will keep it. The Hegel is a great amp and overkill and getting heavier as I get older. Nothing wrong with it and as to speakers, there's only a few I would consider going for given my constraints in size and price as I down size. The Iota though gives alot for the money, and while there's more power than I need, it doesn't weigh more than what I prefer. Still a reasonable package for me. The CA-1 may or may not sound better, don't know until I try it. It has none of the options of the Iota, nor any others Nemo currently reviewed. It's spartan in that regard. But I do not need the bells and whistles as I like my dacs. A couple of inputs even if RCA. The XLR is nice on the Iota but doubt they are truly balanced but still nice to have as is a Preout and a subout. Though the dac chips are decent as Marantz have used them in their CD players and dacs. If the CA-1 had at least a Pre Out it would have suited me better but there are work arounds for that. I will evaluate without a sub and decide whether to keep it or sell it. The Hegel will probably be sold soon. If the CA-1 works out, guess I am done, its got a lineage with Van Alstine always seemingly putting out excellent performance over the decades. For those always asking if its better than the Set 120, I think its different. Just a preference I suppose. I will keep an eye on the Iota though. If it proves to be more reliable over the long term, I would buy just to have it as different amps also perform with different speakers. Someday, after I move, I will consider a Fritz, Totem among a few select others as a final purchase as I listen till the sun finally sets...hopefully for another 20 years.

Hi, great review... Got two questions... Per the specs... 150W @8ohm and 300W @4ohm. Assuming that the specs aren't fudged, This seems to be a well powered amp. I notice that there are a lot of amps that cannot do this (2X the wpc at 4ohm vs 8ohm. ) Is this something that should be important when considering an amp? The other thing... At this price point... a decent Class D (even GaN) vs AB... your thoughts? Thx.
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 2 ай бұрын
class ab doubling into 4ohms is highly unlikely with the same measurement. But its still a powerful amp so it doesn't really matter. No it is not important, it's just the watts game and you should not play the watts game. I don't really like class D amps so I don't have much comment beyond that.

First lets keep in mind the CHoco costs 60% more money than these SA40 and on numerous occassions I've said the CHoco can compete with amps that cost double its price. Ultimately we have to remember purist amps without features dollar for dollar will generally outperform full featured integrated amps at the same price, all those features cost money just like all the high end parts the purist amp uses cost money. If you don't need all the features these amps offer and you can afford the higher price of the CHoco you absolutely will gain more SQ by going with a purist amp like the CHoco. A great reason to get the billie over the SA40 is you don't mind spending more money for a similar sound, have the option of changing tubes, want a smaller amp that looks more stylized. Billie is a great amp for sure but some of that money is going towards that beautiful case where the SA40 uses more of the standard AVR style construction with stamped steel. With the standard tubes the SQ difference is not that big. In my experience really good $1k amps like the IotaVX SA40 and really good $2k amps have simlar SQ but the $2k ones have much nicer build quality and sometimes more advanced features like Buchardt i150 having room correction for example. The CHoco is the hidden gem where the SQ is much higher than the price would suggest.

Hi Nemo, great review! I would appreciate if you could help me out with some advice. I am looking for an amp like this for my new living room setup for movies and music and before finding this amp I have been looking at Technics SU-GX 70. My question being, would the Technics be better(?) with its integrated room correction technology but way less power (80 watts per channel at 4ohms) vs the IotaVX SA40 with no room correction but a lot more power. As I am not well educated on the matter myself, I am having a hard time knowing which would be the best option here. I know the Technics cost more and also has streaming services, but that is not priority nr 1 for me. I would plan to pair either amp with the Buchardts P300's or the S400 mkII's. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you before hand! (:

Hi bro, I love the IotaVX SA40 and I love the Buchardt S400 MK2 but if you mix them together just know you may be missing some fine resolution or rdetail, both products are neutral to warm which is not the sound most people want for a TV setup but it has tone controls so you may want to use them to increase the treble a little bit. As far as the technics I have not heard that one. Room correction can be very helpful if the room has a lot of problems, personally I don't use room correction myself. If you have a big room for example and your couch is in the middle of the room that is commonly known to have bad bass response, in that scenario room correction can help but if you have a normal rectangular room and have your couch closer to the wall and your TV setup against a wall you should get great sound either way. Also keep in mind if you want to play music or movies crazy loud the S400 MK2 is still a compact speaker and most compact speakers have their limits so if your room is big or you like to listen to movies/music at 90dB+ then this speaker may not be for you and you will want something larger!! Personally I use the S400 MK2 for music and TV and I don't have any problems but I don't watch movies at movie theater volumes, to me that is too loud.

@KapucciMane 12 күн бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda Thank you for the response! My room would be about 35 m2 and the couch would be kinda in the middle of the room while the tv would be mounted on the wall and speakers near it (not against ofc). I too do not listen to music or watch movies with insane volumes, as I am also kind of sensitive to higher treble, I tend to have my volume just as normal enjoyable levels for most part and I currently use Edifier S3000 pro active speakers with 6.5 woofers and they are plenty loud/bassy already, so the Buchardts will definately be good for my application. Room shape is a big square but with one side totally open. From what you said, I gather I could potentially benefit from room correction. As I'm also thinking about adding a sub down the line, which I would also love to add the Buchardts Sub10 that also has it's own room correction, but I'm still torn on if the 80w per channel would be enough to drive either the P300 or S400mkII (most likely the 400).

@@NemoPropaganda I have looked at it :) But it does not seem to has hdmi. I do not neccesarely need big power per say, more just wondering is 80watts enough or do i need more :) I've always used active studio monitors for most of my needs, so this would be my first ever passive speaker setup. Is there any real difference using an amp with hdmi vs without other than just controlling volume with one remote or is there more benefits?
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 12 күн бұрын
@@KapucciMane no benifit, only convenience for HDMI, as far as watts, everyone is different. I think 80w is a good amount of power. The room size and listening habits play a big factor though so there is no one size fits all answer. I have used 8 watt amps that were enough but I also have used 40w amps I felt were not enough. Try to demo the amp if possible, Technics is pretty popular.

They don't seem to list any specs regarding the sub out. Is it true bass management, where it high passes the mains and low passes the sub? If so, at what frequency and is it adjustable?

bass management is extremely rare in a stereo amp, the only 2 that I know of that have it at this price are the RR2160 and the Emotiva TA2.

@@KapucciMane not better, just different, though some amps have room correction and high pass functions built in so if you want that you'll either want to make sure either your sub or amp has those features.

oh for goodness sake - I checked the power consumption on this thing and it's 900W!!! This amp alone would quite literally double my electricity usage and bill (and we don't have cheap power in the EU) if I listened for a modest 4 hours per day. I may still contact them to ask about average consumption with normal usage but right there...that's insanity.

@lisar3944
@lisar3944 Ай бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda they each show 900w on the back of the unit for rated consumption, so it would appear to be "each" (total of 1800 W paired). Note I do expect this is rated for "peak" consumption which one would likely never hit without destroying their ears, speakers and possibly walls, but still. Just for reference, I recently tried the VMV A1 which is allegedly high bias class A, rated at 10W out, max 40W consumption, and it was pulling about 20 watts at low-moderate listening levels in a small room. 900w strikes fear into my soul :D

@@NemoPropaganda Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying! I didn't get the holographic imaging from it; I would describe the center image as dissolved, but not in a good way. It wasn’t pinpoint accurate, and I had trouble getting my speakers to work well with this amp. I sit in a semi-treated room with bass traps and first reflection point absorbers. Even after switching rooms, I had the somewhat the same experience. The midrange felt very neutral, and the overall sound signature was clean with excellent bass control - which was quite impressive. However, the amplifier didn't have that organic sound like the SA3 + PA3, and that was my main issue. It just didn't sound as alive as the previous models. The best experience I had with it was using it as a power amp for my surround receiver, both for music and movies. The remote control felt very light and plasticky. It had these small brushed steel details on the front, but the feel contradicts the look-it almost feels weightless, like a remote without batteries inside. So yes, my experience was quite different. I think Thomas and Stereo did a spot-on review of this product, and they captured exactly how I felt.
