well i got kinda lucky, someone sold me a empty bally arcade cabinet with a huge front screen for 50 dollars and I modded it into a MAME machine and its ran off a laptop and used the X-arcade thing with literally all arcade games (old arcade games) and loads of neo geo games.If you like arcade games just get MAME and an x-arcade stick and your ready to go lol

Robert Robinson do it! And if you can, jailbreak it. I love mine and it has pretty much every single video game known to man from 1982-1994 on it. Even had space for about eight PS1 games.

There may be something wrong with your docking station. Mine does not require the handheld to be in the "ON" position to turn on using the switch. In fact, the docking station wont even work if the handheld is on when inserted. You get an error on the screen of the handheld tell you specifically not the connect it to the docking station in the "ON" position. You might want to get that exchanged.

A friend told me that the HDMI offers wrong resulotion and pale graphics on the handheld and TV and flickering, is it true?

it look like this was ahead of its time, sony and Nintendo have come out with very similar setups since this came out like the Wii U, Switch and the PlayStation TV which plays vita games on the tv among other things so yeah very underrated I think.

Since it only requires 5 volts, could you not plug the handheld into a USB slot of a computer or with a USB adapter to a wall socket?

I was thinking about the external power supply situation and I noticed a few things, first you said it uses 5v 1.5a for power, and it uses usb for the controllers, and I was thinking one of the ports has to provide power to the system and data at the same time for it to work docked and charge. Well usb is designed to do just that, and I found my tablet pulls 5v 2a via usb wich means my tablet pulls more juice then this does and usb works well there. So I bet its how the base is charging the handheld as well.

I dunno, was thinking of getting one of these just for the controls. Really nice clicky thumb stick. Just like the NeoGeo pocket. Like overall this might not be a great product. But hacked and used with other ROMs? Maybe better than a Dingoo?

This is one neat system, I have seen this a few times in stores here. I assumed it was a revamped set up, I still have some big old carts for the real one but they are so hard to get this is a good option.

Why cant SNK or whatever company just re-release the original machine. If there is a Demand. Cost are down. My Advice: Buy Collection on PS2 or XBOX LIVE.

Hey hey one of the two things he said he didn't like about the Neo Geo X isn't true. When you plug it into the TV, you don't have to switch on the portable console as well as the docking station. I just got mine. The portable stays off the whole time it's plugged in. All you need to do is switch the docking station on and off when it's plugged into the tv. Maybe when he tried that he didn't wait long enough for it to boot up?

Coming from having a home system from its release, I think this is a great deal. The games used to cost 199.99 each and that was in 1991 dollars. Agree it should charge without the enclosure, I got it just in time for my vacation, but ended up leaving it home last month for that reason. I can't wait to play some of the later Metal Slugs, I really hope they come out for this as they were priced around 500 bucks if memory serves.

Your docking station is not working. I turned the hand held off and docked it. It turned on fine from the dock with the hand held in the off position.

Here in the UK even the cheapest Neo Geo cart was the price of a megadrive/snes and a game of your choice. And by the time the Neo Geo CD came out which was cheaper the interest had wore off somewhat. Love the sports games SNK did.

Cheese Sub Why were the games that expensive though? Did they use the same exact hardware as the arcade machines? Or did they really think people would pay 200 for Fatal Fury or Samurai Showdown just because?

They were identical as far as I'm aware in every sense, literally arcade perfect, however if you tried to buy an arcade machine back then it was about 2000 to 3000 pound/dollars, so the Neo Geo console was very good and cheap in that sense. It was 4 snes games for one Neo Geo game but then you got a game that was the same as the arcade. Mind you there were some bad Neo Geo games that were expensive and were a rip off like riding hero.

bowlofarthritus also to add if like me you don't like fighting games then the Neo Geo was limited as SNK spend most the 90s trying to impress Capcom by making dozens of SF2 clones, when SNK made games like Neo Turf Golf/Baseball Stars 2/Super Sidekicks they made the best sports games, but racing games were like 2 and platformers 1, shame really SNK didn't make more variety

Cheese Sub I kind of a fighting game Snob. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat primarily but there have been some decent ones over the time between the two. I think it was the Sega Dreamcast that I experienced my very first arcade perfect home game; Marvel VS Capcom. The game had no load times, the audio and animation was perfect. Daytona USA was also arcade perfect, but I did not have the steering wheel controller to go with it.... unfortunately, arcade perfect is a past tense now, since video arcades is a dieing or a dead species of gaming. Idk about you, but I miss the stand up coin machines, placing your quarters up by the screen stating that quarter marked your turn. Back in those days, 70 some wins in a row in 2 player I was known for. Now everything is online. It really took away the videogame flare if you ask me

Both 4:3 and 16:9. You have a button to toggle between the two. There is also a button on the handheld (L2) I believe that switches the aspect ratio.

You can plug it straight in to a tv without the docking station. I tried it with mine and it works using both the HDMI and the Composite video. Also I need to have my hand held turned of when docked in order for it to turn on with the docking station.

Great review John. I really would like to have a Neo Geo Gold but I figure I will not play it anytime soon so I guess I will wait till the price comes down in a couple years. I think the external power switch on your docking station is defective. The power switch on mine can and does power the system on/off. I've never had to open the docking station to power the handheld first.
