I have never really been bothered by the loading time with my top loader NGCD. I discovered this machine 15 years ago, and I have been in love with it since. I have been living in Japan for the last 19 years, and was lucky enough to be aware of this console at that time. That's when I bought most of my present collection of games. I guess this loader is probably a better move for people who can't really afford to buy all these games now (I noticed you had an extremely expensive game on your SD card, by the way :D) and still want to see what the NGCD has to offer. It looks like a fun kit to install but the issues you told about had me worried. Maybe one day I will try on a console that has a dead CD player. Thanks for the great video, as always.

I'm glad you had the same problem I had with my SD Loader and showed it in the video. My SD Loader refused to sit on my CPU no matter how hard I pressed. After fiddling around for a few hours, I broke the lifted pin off the Bios chip by mistake and then I just gave up. I had to give it to Cruzlink to get it fixed, he shaved a bit off the silicon on top of the Bios chip to expose enough metal to solder a new wire to it, and then replaced the connector on the SD Loader with a new one, and then used hot glue also so make sure it would never come off by mistake. Works perfectly now. Also I would like to just put it out there that the SD loader has some sound issues with some game dumps that are available at the moment. So some games will need to be redumped and/or tweaked for them to work properly with the SD Loader.

I followed this video and did this modification a few months ago. It brings the console to life and works extremely well. I have read before that people have broken the pin on the I.C at 6.06 in this video. I understand why as this is very delicate and also around 30 years old. I didn’t lift my pin to a very steep angle but once soldered I put Kapton tape between the two soldered joints as an insulator. There was a gap but I just wanted to be sure there wasn’t a short. Maximum respect to Tito, these videos are really comprehensive and easy to follow. Without his hard work on these videos these mods would be so much harder.

@@MachoNachoProductions There were a few differences. Some games would lose a few animation frames to help speed up loading. See Mai Shirinui's P-Power super in Real Bout Special for an example. Other games, mostly fighters, would sometimes have an option of only using one stage for all fights in 2P mode, only loading new character sprites. You sometimes had the option to turn off cutscenes or make character select screens a simple list rather than graphical. Older/smaller games loaded very quickly, sometimes even only once. You forgot to close JP1 for the LED! Hehe. To all viewers: CLOSE jumper JP1 on the SD card PCB. And also if you aren't bothering retaining CD drive functionality, you can skip pads X, Y, and Z, but that's just a minor note. Good timing, with the whole Saudi Arabia SNK news. Seeing the loading times side-by-side really drives home how much of a difference it is. It *felt* fast, but seeing them like this was just mind-blowing. You didn't mention foam when you said what came with the kit. Did we forget foam? :O For the systems that short against the AV shielding: I recommend a double layer of kapton as the last installation I did worked fine with a single layer but as soon as client received it, it failed! A second layer and he was up and running. Be careful calling that yellow wire a ground wire! Might make some folks be careless with it. That wire is not a ground wire and has a pretty high voltage on it! Also, we toyed with the idea of a flex cable or similar. The reality is it would increase the cost of the kit very significantly. Furrtek never released board files, only a Gerber, so it's not easy to tweak his design (which sucks tbh), and we'd have to incorporate a flex or other solution into the Loader as-is essentially. Love your videos as always, brother. Glad you finally got up and running! I'm immortalized in this video now thanks to the Discord screenshot! 🤣

So glad you enjoyed the video! It’s an incredible kit! I can’t believe I forgot the JP1 jumper 🙃 I’ll make a pinned comment! Holy cow, I thought that was a ground wire, actually makes a lot more sense that power runs through it. Yeah I just heard the news about the new ownership of SNK. That’s a crazy coincidence 😅 Totally under the flex cable may not be feasible. Again, thank you for making this kit available! You are doing a tremendous service to the retro community! Cheers!

@@MachoNachoProductions haha the LED is mostly useful when you're first setting up just to see if you're BIOS is getting dumped, verified, and patched successfully. It's not really important other than that! (But I still like it regardless!) And I always enjoy every single one of your videos! Great stuff, always! I just built a GBHD Color recently that I would have never known about if not for your video about Gamebox's kits! I got a DMG kit waiting for me to install too! A flex cable would be super nice. Mena made a quick design of some sort. I also had some ideas based off of something Dan (citrus3000psi) showed off some years ago. The closest we got was trying to make adapters/QSB-type things to be able to use regular FPC ribbons like the one included with the kit, but ultimately there wasn't one with enough connections in it! The socket we found is _much, much_ better I believe and I recommend most folks at least give their 68k a nice scrubbing with a qtip and IPA before even beginning the install. Reflow may or may not be necessary but I'd at least try to get some oxidation off with the qtip. To be completely fair, I also thought that was a ground wire! It wasn't until I was trying to repair a broken NGCD until I learned otherwise. I was tracing out power rails and measuring voltages and trying to see why some of my rails were really low. It wouldn't power on, and it was just working right before! I had to learn a LOT about this console. Apparently the yellow wire has a higher voltage and when you press the power button, it pulls that yellow wire down to ground and that signals the voltage regulators to turn on/send power to the motherboard, from what I gathered. My yellow wire wasn't being pulled all the way down. Then I discovered I had a pin on the ribbon connector for the controller board only sometimes having continuity with the motherboard end. Console would power on when continuity was present. Turned out to ht the ground pin, the way that the controller board was tied into the system's ground! Turns out the pin in the ribbon connector was slightly bent. I bent it back into shape, power switch pulled yellow wire to 0 V, and console booted! I was worried once I learned it had live voltage; I was like "oh crap, what if one of those times I so carelessly left that wire flopping around it shorted something out?!?" lol so I'm glad it was as simple as a bent pin. I guess it didn't know what ground was so it was pulling it down to an arbitrary floating value instead! And the voltage regulator's output is like inversely proportional to the voltage on the yellow wire: the more you pull it closer to ground, the higher the regulator seems to output, with 0v on yellow equalling full/normal power out the regulator, so this is why I had a low, but not 0v output of my regulator! This console and this whole project has certainly been an adventure!!! It is quite an amazing mod overall and while it does have some quirks, Mena has proven he's willing to go above and beyond to help users and provide great customer support and we want to be sure everyone can get up and running! Next on the horizon from Phenom Mod is a batch of Wii HDMI kits and maybe some day some front-loader Neo SD Loader kits! You the man, Tito, and I'm honored to even have a 0.5 second screenshot of my Discord username 🤣. I'm very much looking forward to one of your potential(?) (unsure if it's a definite thing yet) upcoming videos! I don't know if it's a secret, so I don't want to spoil anything, but the one hint I'll leave is that it involves something very tiny ;) Keep up the great work! Hopefully we can get some awesome Nacho Nacho vids for many years to come. It's cool seeing the console stuff on your channel now too and not just the handhelds and other stuff! A word of warning to others, at 7:43 the part where you connect the CDA cable to the SD loader: I have 3 NGCD consoles and on each on the CDA cable is too short to complete that step. I ended up cutting it and extending it by soldering extra wire onto it. Edit: I noticed in Furrtek's instructions he mentions this issue: "On some models of the console, the CDDA wires may be too short to be plugged directly into the loader. In this case, solder 3 lengths of wire from the CDDA connector pads on the CDA board to the unpopulated CDDA connector on the other end of the loader board. Make sure that the order of the wires matches the order of the original wire bundle !"

Try playing the early low meg games on original CD... they run fine. This mod is fine for the people who haven't got original AES/MVS hardware .. or legit NeoCD discs I guess... just rom sets.

The graphics output from this NeoGeo CD is fabulous when connected to a LCD monitor via a OSSC. Even better than a AES or MVS system

I would like to mention that the Neo Geo CD only has about 90+ titles compared to the cartridge based systems. Still worth it. I have 3 systems with 3 NeoSD Loaders. You also didn't mention anything about the menu system and cheats similar to the UNIbios.

Yeah it's nowhere near as much but there some quality MVS conversions and homebrew. It's definitely not the same as a traditional Neo Geo but it's for sure a much cheaper way to get into it... When parts shortage doesn't ruin everything...

The socket connection is reliable if you use a proper socket with enhanced strenght (Amiga 600 CPU/RAM expansions are made that way). What may help further is something that will lock the PCB on CPU, but i don't know if it is possible here. Good thing you mentioned a solder may crack on CPU, althought it's a rare occurence. Spraying pins with Isopropyl alcohol and plugging socket "on wet" also helps getting good connection.

I wouldn't say the loading time are that bad to the point of it being unplayable. Only certain games have frequent and slow load times of the few NGCD game I have the loading times are pretty much the same as PS1's Cool mod though.

One cool mode along the same lines that could be cool would be just to put a faster cd drive, or load the cds into the SD cards.

It wasnt a failure, i had my Neo Geo CD imported to to the UK in 1994 before the PS1 was even out in Japan. The sound on the Neo CD was amazing, nothing could beat or even match it in its day and yes i had the MVS version before this in 1992 but was way too expensive to run.
@MrRobarino2 жыл бұрын
Yes it was a failure. From a sales and market-share perspective, it never sold enough to even break 1% of the market. Just because you personally imported and bought one doesn't change that fact. The Neo Geo CD was released in September 94 and couldn't compete against the hype that was already surrounding the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation which both released in November and December of that same year..
@v3teran752 жыл бұрын
@@MrRobarino Lol i bet you had a Sega megadrive or Supernes didnt you? I skipped both of these and went for a Neo Geo coming from an Amiga 500 which pissed all over those 89 bit consoles. As a Hardcorer gamer it was a success. Go look at Samurai Showdown or Viewpoint on the Ps1 or Saturn and compare to the Neo Geo. Neo trumps them both.

Cool video. Above my skill level, but fun to watch. Just curious about the socket connecting over the 68000 chip. Is it actually interacting with the chip, or just using it to hold the board in place? And are there any heat worries covering the chip like this?
@MachoNachoProductions2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is actually connecting to the chip. As far as I know there isn’t any issues cause by heat
@RastaJediX2 жыл бұрын
The 68K doesn't really get that hot. No worries about heat! NeoBiosMasta has been around for a long time and has used this same approach. No issues reported over the years.

Load times are not the worst part of this console, they vary from game to game with some having a large load time up front and little or no loading afterward, to games like Last Blade 2 where there is a 1-3 minute long load screen between every fight. The real thing that ruins the NGCD is the lack of some banger titles like Andro Dunos, Eight Man, and every single metal slug game except 1 and 2. Really a shame.
@jervey123 Жыл бұрын

Unplayable is a bit harsh, I played a fair bit with it before actually installing this mod. The chief reason for doing it, was for convenience, ODEs beat fumbling around looking for are I put my CDs. This way I can keep the CDs in their cases nice and tiddy.

I agree with unplayable. Every tried kof99?
@SkyScourgeGod2 жыл бұрын
@@DavideNastri One title in a sea of 90ish. Three if you also count The Last Blade 1 & 2 which, admittedly, does have some bad loading. Everything else is more than manageable, often only requiring one load and the rest is good to go. Most of these games would play no differently if they were on a PS1, 3DO or Saturn. Every CD console has to load, that's just a fact of life.
@DavideNastri2 жыл бұрын
@@SkyScourgeGod Strongly disagreed. A few titles are more than fine but more "modern" ones are just pain. Imho any kof after 96 is just unplayable. Check art of fighting 3... You have many online charts showing loading times around (and more) than one minute PER ROUND. World hero 2 jet (old) is... 40 seconds per round? Not acceptable. Install neo SD loader and you will see what your neo geo cd is capable of. Perfection, loading times are close to zero, always. Ps1 loading times, compared to a normal ngcd are zero. Ngcd has 1x cd, the slowest of the bunch. Also had 56 mbit window of RAM to load into that just made it worse from loading perspective than any saturn or ps1. More than my opinion this is... The planet's opinion on the topic.
@deadmetalbr2 жыл бұрын
