@@erickiplimo , Exciting to learn that you are watching me in Kenya! One of my most memorable trips was to watch a total solar eclipse in Kenya (1980). It's an experience I'll never forget. I'd love to return and experience your wonderful country again. From Nairobi, to Mombasa, the Taita Hills, Lake Nakuru, the parks, and all the wonderful people I met. Ron

@@ronhipschman wow Ron, when you came I was not born but I imagine this place was very pristine and wild and you must have enjoyed your watching that eclipse. Welcome back and pay a visit to the places you have mentioned. You will still enjoy I bet. I enjoy astrology, I would love watching the deep skies. Armature astronomy!

My Toyota has two Neodymium magnets in the transmission oil pan and one magnetic drain bolt in the engine pan. They work great catching an impressive amount of micro iron shavings. Very important.
@ronhipschman2 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess those things really work! Good to know! I had no idea whether that device was snake-oil or not. My only doubt was that if you stuck it to the OUTSIDE of the transmission cover, whether the lines of force would penetrate through the iron of the cover. I would think that you'd have to mount the magnet INSIDE the transmission somehow - maybe with a double-sided magnet?
@LFTRnow2 жыл бұрын
@@ronhipschman That is what I was wondering too. If inside the pan, it should work. But outside? Seems unlikely, and as soon as it is removed on the outside the particles would be released.
@LFTRnow2 жыл бұрын
Are the magnets inside or outside of the pan, how do they change them out? Did you order this as a separate add-on or was it included with the car?
@Tranceman582 жыл бұрын
@@LFTRnow For my Toyota Sienna's transmission, the manufacturer puts the magnets inside the pan. When I take off the transmission oil pan to change the filter, I clean the iron fuzz particles off the neodymium magnets. Ron's magnet example is an exterior magnet, which I have not tried.

@@ronhipschmanMagnetic sump plugs are available. A slightly more elegant version has an electrical connection to the magnet that gets shorted to ground when the amount of magnetic debris exceeds a low level.

In a couple of months we'll get the other supermagnets, the samarium/cobalt ones that the NIBs replaced in many settings. NIB magnets are stronger and cheaper, but samarium/cobalt continue to work at higher temperatures, so they still have lots of uses. I believe the neodymium and samarium force the magnetic domains to align. I'm curious how Ron will deal with promethium. At least technetium had a decent half-life.
@ronhipschman2 жыл бұрын
Syd, please! Spoiler alert! As far as how I'll treat Promethium, I love all my children, and Promethium will not be left out in the cold (quite the opposite!)

Hey, thanks Tranceman58. I shouldn't be so lazy myself, and do this job of posting the links. Great job! By the way, thanks for finding that oil-pan bolt with the built-in neodymium magnet. Now I'll bet THAT work just great. There, the magnet is INSIDE the crankcase where is belongs!

@@ronhipschman I have a neodymium magnetic drain plug in my Toyota. Collects enough iron particles to look like a small tribble from Star Trek. I enjoy finding the links to your Tales from the Periodic Table. Makes me appreciate your hard work in researching the elements.

I don't know why but people must *REALLY* like using Greek words to name things including the elements themselves lol 😂 A lot of the elements such as oxygen, hydrogen, neon and neodymium (among others) derived their names from Greek words.
@ronhipschman2 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that the Greeks also gave us the basis for our (now struggling) democratic system. Dēmos "common people," , + kratos "rule, strength".

@@ronhipschman I think it's pretty cool how a lot of the elements (as with many common English words such as "photograph" and "gymnastics) actually derived from Greek words, makes me wish I was Greek. The commonly talked element oxygen for example I believe translates to "acid former" in Greek :)
