I think this was made in the early 90s but nomatter which decade the music is still freaking awesome

Yeah!!! Love that 1980's/ early 90's synth music on every single programme possible... you know it's a Top Gun era programme when you hear this sort of music on a documentary.

@zonashad5953 it was made in 1988 , the 33rd nomads ,my wing, I was in the Marines when this showed on ESPN, I was yelling at the TV,,my ex wondered why ,,, it was because I personally , AND my weapons crew chief both told that pilot NOT to do what he did !! ,, as you can see as he goes to check the seeker head, the decal on our wing bird (was in my squadron , 60th) , has TWO apples on it from two prior wins, , and I was yelling at the TV because I knew ,,, no third apple !! Lol😮

The invention of the Navy Top Gun school and Air Force Red Flag programme made a MAHOOSIVE difference to the quality and survivability of American pilots, it can't be overstated enough. These training and tactics lessons and competitions made the American pilots (and pilots from the rest of NATO) a lot more capable of winning the fire fight against the Russian made fighters which they would face if the time came....... and it has definitely worked over the years, enabling the F-15 to achieve the impeccable air combat service record that it currently has. Plenty of hand slapping and whooping are standard operating procedures!!!!

I remember William Tell very well. I was stationed at Tyndall in '86. We did the work with the different squadrons that were competing. It was something else. This is the Air Forces fighter town.

Shoutout to the valiant old hun (qf -100) drones. All that history. A warrior’s death, at least. Respect for the all the q drones - I can’t believe we have qf-16s now, but it still makes me sad. Thanks for posting.

I notice that the RAF were not represented during this exercise,the USAF were probably fed up of having their arses handed to them by our fighter pilots!.The F-15 looks magnificent though!.Actually,before deciding on the Tornado ADV with which to replace our Phantoms,both the F-14 and F-15 were evaluated by the RAF and didn't quite live up to RAF mission requirements,the Tornado F3 turned out to be an incredibly versatile interceptor/fighter and was used in the "wild weasel" SEAD role.

Ah yeah I remember watching the tape on this. Oh about 35:55 yes we know Eglin’s ‘Nomads’ lost the title for “Top Gun” but ironically they got their redemption during the 1991 Gulf War.

I did this particular upload for you. I originally had this two pack of the Top Gun themed Documentaries going back to the Summer of 1994. Unfortunately, the quality of the tape somewhat deteriorated over the years, and it had on-and-off uneven tracking when I tried to do a transfer. Yet, I was able to find another factory sealed two pack via Amazon and came up with this near flawless version.

Sir this is very much appreciated more than you know. If you are interested I took an excerpt and did a sort of "remake" using DCS. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJXch2Cja9BgfNE

It's amazing in the 80s we had remote controlled full size drones
@jeffalvich94345 жыл бұрын
we actually had them in the 60's...as the they launched drones over Catalina to test the Phoenix missile from planes including the F14 launched from Point magu...the USN pacific Missile test center in California.....my dad was one of the original engineers that designed the Phoenix Missile and was later in charge of all QA manufacturing
@jeffalvich94345 жыл бұрын
With regards to the Phoenix missile Tests, for the 6 on 6 test (6 missiles vs 6 aircraft)...they used the F86 saber, F4 and a twin prop engine … IMHO B25 Bomber....the F4 was launched with a rocket from magu to get it up to Mach 1+ quickly....

I agree there were a lot of production errors. However, it was still interesting to watch. Shame about those F100 Super Sabres, though. They did a hell of a job in Vietnam in their own right.

So many mistakes in the footage. Examples include showing F18's and pretending they are F15s, telling us one guy was fly the newest F15E but the footage was not of one. The E model is the Strike Eagle and has conformal tanks on the sides of the body. It looks quite different from the earlier models. PLUS, the E model is a 2-seater as standard. Then there was occasional footage of the F14 which I think they were trying to pass off as airforce planes and/or F15's. Other than that, it was interesting to learn about William Tell - I had never heard of it before. And always great to see the mighty Eagle in action. Shame the footage is so old as it's terrible quality.

@@mikelovin7 yup, definitely not propaganda ! , as I was actually in the 33rd and worked these planes ! Look close near the end, as the pilot goes to inspect the missile, the decal on the plane has TWO apples on it , the first we won when I was there , the second, won the year after I got out , this William tell is 1988, I was in the Marines, and watched this on espn,,, 😂
