I was a beach lifeguard at Huntington Beach for 10 years and one day my jeep partner confided in me that he was a reserve pilot in the Marine Corp and that the next day he would be ferrying A4 Skyhawk's from Oakland to San Diego. The next day he performed a airshow right over the beach at the Huntington Beach Pier at about 150 ft above the water. OMG, everyone was supportive. I will not say his name but god bless you brother.

I really enjoyed the sequel but only because the aerial cinematography is so immersive. For tension and character building the first is in a league of it's own. Tony Scott achieved a level of drama and era defining coolness with his shooting and editing signature that no amount of cockpit mounted scenes can replicate. Top Gun is a stone cold classic.

Word. Every character in Top Gun is original and colourful. Even Tom Cruise at 24 seemed much more alive in this film. The sequel is just more hollywood cookie cutter characters and a dull script with no fire and no memorable moments. Top Gun the original has all of that and more.

I personally think that 6:40 until the part where Cougar lands is a great scene because the background music really gets the mood of how scared he feels after the enemy aircraft had screwed him up. @@justalpha9138 I've always liked the way the newer generations of aircraft like the F-22 and F-35 fly. The maneuvers they can pull off are jaw dropping. I'm just more partial to the designs of the F-14,15, and 18 (16's for some reason never quite did it for me). Probably just because I grew up around them. As for your consideration of joining the AF....well I'd say go for it. I'm a Navy Brat myself which probably helps explain why I tend to like their aircraft more. But I say that if you have the desire to serve, and the dream to fly...Well then the AF would be a great fit. Regardless, you should follow your dreams, whatever they may be. Best of luck to you.

An AF recruiter would also be able to point you in the direction of resources and the types of things they look for. As a 19 year old US Marine Station aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CVA (N) 65 during the Vietnam War; I get a thrill watching this movie. I seen so many different types of aircraft launched and recovered on the Big E day and night. They even went up against Russian Bear (bombers) flying overhead trying to harass us. At 22, I saw many fighters come in tree top level and bomb enemy targets. I would buy a fighter pilot a drink in a heart beat!
