After a few hours of play (it's on gamepass!) I can confirm that luck can heavily influence your run, especially concerning bombs. If you have a way to cause a few explosions early on, you're usually fine for the whole run. It's kind of a bummer to play well enough in the first levels but not getting access to half of the loot because the game didn't spawn any bomb. Basically it works like in Isaac with bombs & keys, but it feels more punishing here. But that might also be because I'm early in the game and don't know/have unlocked everything. What's cool though is the third resource, those purple crystals, can be bypassed by shooting stuff and losing a few hearts. And often you have alternative solutions for locked door if you have double jumps or things like that, so it's not as punishing as the secret rooms in rogue legacy where you need to have a specific trait.

You'll definitely find it alot easier once you unlock the mini games and special barrels. Bombs and keys become much more abundant.

Here let me spell this out for you: I didn't mean responding to a year old comment wasn't allowed or anything. What I meant is that if you're going to respond to something that isn't relatively recent, we'd expect you to bring something interesting, or at least fun. Here you just tried insulting me by showcasing to the world that you couldn't understand relatively simple things, let alone read the comments you're responding to. You even went as far as outing yourself as a Fortnite hating gamer, which probably means you're younger than me, even if you called me kiddo, and is especially dumb here because for people who are bad at games, Fortnite is probably way more random than your average rogue like. I loved Risk of Rain's power stacking, so maybe this would be pretty fun. I'll keep it in mind for when the roguelike fatigue ends.

Neon Abyss is enjoyable however after about 20 hours for me the fun is fading away...it has little replay value due to the amount of luck that is involved, minimal variation in generated rooms and lacklustre boss fights. Risk of Rain tramples all over this game. Also if you haven't already, check out The Binding of Isaac, it is a god-tier rogue-like game.

This is only a half accurate review. You can get through any run regardless of number of keys or bombs. They are not required to win any run. I almost didn't buy this game because of that one INNACURATE comment and after buying it need to come back to post this. This is one of the best rogue likes I've played right up there with ROR1, enter/exit gungeon, nuclear throne and even hades imo. (While also having huge similarities to those games) 10/10 from a hardcore rogulike/rogulike enjoyer

Got the demo on switch and dang! 1. It's hard and feels like a modern take on of a classic Ps2 game. 2. Randomly generated dungeons! I could literally play this demo for hours purely from that lol. Gonna get it on my Xbox since its apart of gamepass. Overall a fun wacky game for when your bored and want to have a challenge!

My last play through I got a power up that let me shoot more shots depending on how many pets I had so 5 spread shots that went across the whole screen later with a mask that reduced damage by half; Juggernaut: Indeed Confirmed:P

I'm guessing the power-up stacking takes less from Shmups and more from roguelikes, as Risk of Rain and Enter the Gungeon also go this route. I'm not super sold on the luck factor. While that may make for a more replayable game, I feel kind of frustrated when I have to throw out a run because of bad rolls, unless it's extremely uncommon.

In my own couple runs, I feel like the luck is fairly tolerable line in Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. My deaths have been mostly due to not knowing enemy patterns and just sucking at the game in general. Of course good items help a ton, but I feel like once you are really good at the game, you'll be able to win almost all runs despite the items the game gives you

Extremely surprised to see someone mention Hell Yeah: Wrath of the Dead Rabbit. I truly thought I was the only one. after playing it for awhile, my conclusion is the game is very heavily rely on RNG (sorry for my English) pros: -if you play risk of rain of binding of issac, this game is kinda like those, in the sense that you can stack as many items as you want and just become a god as some point - i love the wisdom/wrath(purple/red) system in the game, its let you choose which kind of route you wanna play. you can play it safe and wise(purple) but you will get less loot to choose from and you have to be very careful of your surroundings. Or, you can take the more dangerous path(red) where you have to intentionally lose health and even Max hp in order to be able to choose more stuffs cons:(oh boy where do i start) -the game is very RNG, you need keys and bombs in order to get tons of stuffs in this game, you'll also need them to get more bombs and keys. However, once you run out, you'll have to miss out on tons of stuffs -the bullets (your) bullets are very VERY bright. after some point, you manage to get some flashy gun and passives/relic/... that let you shoot more bullets per shot; its all fine and dandy until you cant see the screen anymore. and NO that doesnt mean all your enemies are dead, even if you have tons of bullets on screen, each bullets do jack sh** amount of damage, so you dont even know if the enemies are still alive or not; and you dont even know who hit you. -Remember the phrase "high risk/high reward" its often mean it should be OPTIONAL and you can either take it to boost your self by alot but come with a draw back that you have to figure out how to work around. In this game, its a "you MUST play high risk in order to gain mediocre rewards". The purple/red system could have let you choose powerful/high tier rewards for playing their route; but no, you'll get to choose 1 from a bunch of normal relics that can be found in shop/relic room. There is literally no kind of build except stacking random stuff up and hope you'll win. - 50% of the relic are straight up very situational to out-right garbage: + there are relics that proc on melee kill while the whole game there is VERY few way to deal melee. Also, to make matter worse, melee have it own scaling and is very weak compare to guns; and even if you score that melee kill, there is only a chance to get it +there are relics that make bomb more powerful, however there is only 1 relic that negate bomb damage. there is a relic that make your guns shoot out explosive bullets, but that explosion can hurt you; good luck with that because after stage 5 you'll take 1 full heart/shield instead of half from EVERY source I can go on and on about how this game is unfun/RNG-based after a while, but you will have to experience yourself in order to get how frustrating it is to play this game

This game is most similar to binding of issac and imitates it almost to a T. But that includes all the jank and unfun mechanics and luck dependency the original binding of issac had. Numerous systems in the gameplay lack a great deal of polish and it hurts replayability a great deal how much is left up to randomness. I don't mean item drops randomness. I mean walking into certain rooms immediately damages you via enemy placement. Or certain routs to items being blocked off because of how an enemy acted before you even engaged it in combat. To go with that many of the stats and systems exact measurements are obscured for unclear reasons. And the game itself seems to be designed without replayability in mind. All that said you'll probably play it anyways. It's just 20 bucks

My only concern with this game is the look of it, when I bought a game called neon abyss I was expecting lights everywhere, big neon cartels and stuff like that, yet I was quite dissapointed that the only places that do it this way were the bar, the dance hall, and the first room on the first room, the rests of the rooms you acces have very little detail on them. Another big concern, enemy desing, the normal enemies have nothing to do with the whole aesthetic of the game (apart from some robot bears). The boss by the other hand, they look really really good, especially the final bosses. Even though I'm not a fan of some things of this game, it is soooo fun, would totally reccomend

One thing I like about these is that they do the main job of a review very effectively: show the game and let me decide if it's something I'm interested in. Literally twenty seconds in, and I know it's going to be yet another procedurally generated pixel shooter, which I'm already sick to death of playing. When will devs like this go back to investing actual time and effort into scripting an experience for players instead of just relying on randomization to stand in for challenge and replay value? If there's a good level, I'll never see that again, and no human actually created it, so it doesn't matter. If it's a bad level, they didn't playtest or plan out the factors that led to it. PG maximizes the replayability of a game at the cost of making the entire game much shallower. Don't get me wrong: some titles work fine with PG. I'll just save my money for one of those, and if I'm really hurting for a hit of PG shooters, I've already got plenty to tide me over.

I loved Rogue DoD, a smattering of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles, Dark Cloud was one of my favorite games if you want to count that, and Enter the Gungeon was quite entertaining. The key is whether the game stands up by itself, and many just don't, and by now the formula feels tired to me. Seeing no other hook other than "procedural dungeon crawler" doesn't get my interest anymore, because there've just been *so many* titles already that the novelty's worn off. Part of it, I think, is hitting that very difficult magic spot that encourages replayability while minimizing the irritating parts of repetition, with strong rules in place to ensure good level generation. Part of the reason I found Dead Cells engaging was that there was a feeling of forward progress because of the permanent upgrades, while others feel like a grind that never really goes anywhere once you've played that title enough to get a feel for its quirks and challenges. Heavy Bullets is still a favorite go-to for relaxation almost solely because of its soundtrack. Does that make sense? Apologies for the wall of text.

It's okay, but weaker than all the games it is influenced by. It's equal parts "Rogue Legacy", "Dead Cells", and "BOI", but worse than all of them. I also think a lot of it's problems boils down to it's controls. Not so much the controls themselves(which can be re-binded), but there's just too much going on to get comfortable with any scheme. When the default "jump" button is "up", you know it's a compromise for how busy it all is. Good first effort, though. With some tweaks it could be great.

You forgot to tell that the player needs to "restart" the game every time after defeating a new boss. The character becomes too overpowered and the devs had no other way to dealing this than to make the player start from scratch. First, I thought this was a bug. But no - it's a "mechanic". Then there's other luck based "token" mechanics that are there just to slow the progress down. If the developers would have been honest, and there would not have been these artificial mechanics that force the player to play the game over and over again, a skilled player could beat the game in less than an hour. What a joke.

Kind of terrible in my opinion, it copies nearly everything line for line from Isaac, and the "infinite synergies" are nearly all just flat stat changes. Takes the face of Isaac and leaves the soul somewhere in a dumpster. Wouldn't buy, just play Binding of Isaac instead.
