Neons, Black Neons, Cardinals and Green Neons - Which one is right for you?

Nice to see the black neon and green neon getting some attention, a lot of people only really know or care about the neon and cardinal tetras Black neons in particular are very underrated. I imagine they’re often overlooked because they’re not colorful but they’re still beautiful and I hear they’re very hardy too!

I have heard such negative things about the Neons. Is it true that they are disease prone and won’t last in a tank and likely to introduce illness into a healthy tank?

It all depends on the stock you get.. some of the standard Neon Tetras can be inbred and have low tolerance to disease. The ones we have in South Africa tend to be ok. Look for them to be well fed, stay away if there are any individuals in the tank that are emaciated or have faded colours especially the red part (I am referring to the standard neon tetra, the Green Neons naturally have a lighter red colour).

Ever had any issues if you acclimate them them right and have a good tank/maintenance should be no problems. The green neons are super cool
