I've used mesh cloth over my outdoor tubs and secured them with clips. A lowered water level will help. Once, a typhoon filled the tub to the brim the some fish managed to slip out since mesh cloth can still be pushed by larger fish.

That's Zabby's first tank? She has a gift for scaping tanks. I'm in the process of building my last tank and I hope it comes out close to hers! Ironwood would make a great addition to any fish tank, but I doubt we'll see any enter the hobby. How about "Bobby" for the Hillstream loach? Take care.

This is the first time I've ever heard of Ironwood and I love it in this tank. I love the way she made it "grow out" and there's a pothos intertwined with it, and those roots coming out of a crack into the water. I had no idea pothos roots could actually look good in a scape!

I just got a bunch of C. wendetti "green" in yesterday, Monday, and am getting some different species on Friday. After going through plant sterilization and quarantine, they are going into my 75 after Christmas. This has been a very valuable video for me, as I want my plants to thrive. What Cryptocoryne species is your favorite? Take care.

Zabby's first tank is brilliant!!! Very well thought out. Nice hardscape layout with lots of different sections that keep your interest. Great stocking choices by keeping in mind the natural habits of each species. That tulle solution is inspired--it's like having a lid without having a lid. It prevents escapes but still has good oxygen exchange. The tank looks like it's ready for a specimen fish to feature in it--a Honey Gourami maybe? That Hillstream has "Lennie the loach" vibes to me😂
@ZabZab1Күн бұрын
Hey 😊 yeah, the "having a lid without having a lid" idea is exactly what I was going for! All the benefits of having the lid, without the chunky look or loss of airflow. I've even noticed the evaporation has slowed down since adding the "lid". I've considered a honey gourami, but I've heard they can be a little food aggressive, and not surevif they're shrimp safe?

There are some tetras here not commonly seen in fish stores. I've always been a fan of tetras, but with the exception of silver dollars, I tend to like the more traditionally shaped ones: neons, black neons, brass tetras, cardinal tetras, and the like. I'm actively looking for some green neons, but they seem to be scarce right now. Yesterday I mixed up some soil per your formula. I used one brick of cocoanut coir pear moss, half that volume each of organic compost and organic potting soil and added some organic bone meal and also some aragonite to help buffer the water. The resultant mix is about four gallons in volume. Planning on putting the soil in the tank and start washing the Black Diamond to put on top of it. I have set up a five-gallon tank to quarantine the new plants for a few days, as I'm tired of being surprised by snails showing up unexpectedly. Another quality video where I was introduced to something new. Take care.

When I started my tank, I got 8 Golden white cloud mountain minnows just before going away for the weekend... 😅came back to find 4 little golden bokkoms on the floor next to the tank. I have a rimless tank with a large piece of wood sticking out the top, so a lid was not an option. I also don't like the look of a half-empty tank, so I constructed a flexible cover using coarse, black tulle and airline tubing: - cut the airline tubing length-wise and place it over the edge of the glass. - cut a hole in the tulle to fit around the wood sticking out of the tank. - place the tulle over the tank, and superglue the tulle to the tubing. - cut off the excess tulle, and you're done 😁😁

Very ineresting, thanks for sharing. Does the tulle not disintegrate in the damp environment though and how does it effect your light penetration?

I am from, Cape Town. I have started a tank again after a break of 40 years. I didn't know the water parameters those years, but I had very good results with an undergravel filter. I started my tank, planted, and stocked with fish directly, using Seachem Prim and Stability daily. I used the Nygger strips, which cost R168.00 for 50 strips. I used it for my tank and my pond. In the 125L tank, I have an undergravel filter and a internal canister filter. I am cutting the strips lengthwise in half and then I can test both the pond and tank on 1 strip. After about a week I started to get an ammonia reading, followed by nitrite and nitrate. It stabilized at Ammonia 0-0.5, Nitrite 0.5-1.0, Nitrate 10-20. After some time I slowed down on my filtration rate by choking the cannister valve and the undergravel filter air feeding tubes. I saw that Seachem Matrix required slower speed of the water over the filtration media. It made sense and I did it as well, although I have other filter media an gravel in the tank, a thick layer of about 70 mm. It worked and my readings are now constantly at Ammonia 0, Nitrite at 0.5-1.0 an Nitrate at 10. It appears to be relative stable. I am using C02. I have a Milwahky PH meter for hydroponics, that I calibrate annually. The PH strip reading is close to correct. I am happy with the tests so far. I had no fish deaths yet and no green water, except in the pond, but there I use a uV light filter. Panorame Pet Shop in Parow offers a water test for R4.00 and their results are similar.

A good video that addresses a perennial problem. When I started in the hobby, we had metal-framed tanks with metal hoods. They didn't always close the same way and sometimes an opening was created after feeding your fish or scrubbing the glass. Over the years I've lost a betta, a newt, a tire-track eel, and a couple of Bala sharks. I know some of the open-top tanks give an opportunity for interesting aqua scaping but aren't practical for most aquarists. Today I need to audit my tanks for any openings. Take care.

question: how do i work out how light for my tank?
@droeksonfishkeeping15 күн бұрын
The brightness I would say should be enough to penetrate a little down the substrate if you view it through the glass from the side. Then it should cover the whole tank with no dark spots. Deep tanks from back to front may need two light bars and very high tanks will need stronger lights. I would start with 6 hours and then increase from there if needed. A timer is a must for most people, may of the lights have an integrated timer.

Another great, informative video. I ordered a light for my new 75 gallon yesterday afternoon. After reading various reviews, I went with one that was recommended by many in their "best value" or "best for the money" category: a NICREW 32 watt. I'll review it after a few months of usage. LEDs are the way to go now. Take care.

That's a bit of a mix up of fish... Some I would certainly not put together, but it seems to be working for him... I love the old Box Filters and I use them in my 65ltr and 20ltr tanks. With a bit of Matrix in the bottom and the filter floss I get good water conditions and great clarity too... Yeah, they look a bit ugly, but they polish your water really well. His plants seem to be doing well, but there is a good amount of fish waste to keep them fertilised... Another great vid!

I place about 2 inches of course gravel and cap it off with pool filter sand. I have a large number of corydoras, and they prefer a sandy substrate. My rooted plants do very well in this substrate.
@andrewdefty604419 күн бұрын
Great vid as always... I'm growing plants very well in a sand only substrate with the fish waste as the only means of a fert source. Val's and Elodia for the most part and a lovely Amazon Sword Ruben's which is showing great colours. It would seem that some plants will thrive in just sand, and Val's is one of them. As long as your fish waste is getting deep enough into the substrate (I stir mine gently each two weeks before a water change). This ensures that I mix the waste into the sand deeply enough for the plants to feed from. The tank is about five months old and the plants are of good growth using this method. There are many ways which we can assist with such plant health, and while I have not seen any vids suggesting my methods, it is working well for me. Keep up the good work!

This is a question like "What's the best car?" Answer: It depends. You have laid out the advantages and disadvantages of each. Traditionally, I used the usual aquarium gravel sold in stores. When I restarted in the hobby over two years ago, I at first went with white sand. I wanted to grow plants, and it wasn't the best substrate for plants, so I put it into a new 5-gallon tank. My golden Ancistrus loves it, and we enjoy watching him constantly rescape his tank. That tank will remain untouched as long as he's alive. I have Flourite Red in my show tank. I like it, and most plants seem to like it, but the rinsing and rinsing and rinsing was a pain. I am (finally) getting in my 75-gallon tank tomorrow, Saturday. I have all the ingredients for your soil recipe, but I'm gonna add some Seachem Aragonite "Pearl Beach" coarse sand to it, as I'm planning on having a livebearer tank of Endlers and neocardina shrimp. To cap it, I have in some Black Diamond that still needs washing. To say that I cannot wait to get started is putting it mildly. I'll let y'all know how it is coming. Take care, and cheers!
