Nepali saleswoman Sarita speaks about thangka paintings. She says, "These paintings are called Thangka paintings and these paintings are from the 13th century. Buddhist people while traveling use these paintings to worship because it is difficult to carry idols while traveling. They use these paintings for meditation. This round design is called a Mandala and it is for meditation. They are painted on cotton canvas".

Just for information...the mandala that she explained is called Kalachakra mandala which translates to wheel of time....kaala meaning time (not the color black) and chakra meaning wheel or cycle... Black circle might not be the correct name...please correct me if I am wrong....

Definitely visit Kathmandu and Pokhara for the Buddhist art. Shop with Madan Shakya and the gate of the Golden Temple in Patan. Also, visit the Thangka school at Buodan Budanath Stupa. Shop around before you buy. Don't miss the Tibetan carpet factories. Don't fall for the milk scams. Just say no and walk on. Take an extra passport photo and about 50 USD for visa, get in and enjoy this amazing culture.
