This was such an amazing performance together, and they only had like 1 or 2 days to figure out what songs they want to do. The entire season of this show, is recorded in 2 weeks time, they fly these musicians to a resort where there are no distractions, family and friends are not allowed to come along. This means that every episode is recorded in about 2 days, in these 2 days the singers are expected to learn more about the artist that gets the spotlight for that episode, learn one or two of their songs, and then perform it live, infront of them, no audience, just the singers, the band and the host. Back to this beautiful version of Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe's masterpiece Barcelona, this song can only go 2 ways when performed by others, either it fails bigtime because the singers do not have the pipes for that song, or.. like in this case, they slay it AND make it their own. I was blown away when i saw it on TV and i still am awestruck about how good it was/is.

Hey Nephi, let me explain you something about the program "Beste Zangers"(Best Singers), to you. Here's how it goes; you throw 6 or more artists together in a beautiful environment, and let them sing each other's repertoire. In every episode one of the artists is "the guest of honor", and the other artists will perform a song from or a song the guest of honor loves or likes. You continue the program until every artist has been guest of honor once, on a week by week basis. Every single person you see in this program are singers in their own fields and there are no judges involved, it's just a friendly competition between artists. In this program we have had some intriguing combinations and performances as you can imagine.

This is such a great rendition of Freddie and Montserrat's hit song Barcelona. I give for the people who watch this some information about this tv show or its background. In that season we had (on stage in this song) Tommie Christiaan, who is a musical star in the Netherlands, Tania Kross who is a highly rated (internationally) opera singer. The name of the pretty young girl is Maan (in englisch Moon), she's a "pop" singer (i use "" because she is better than just that), the older blonde lady is a dutch treasure called Anita Meyer, she's been on the musicscene for well over 40 years now and concidered one of the best. Next to her you saw Danny Christiaan, a longtime volk singer (sings mainly in dutch or german). The guy with the dreadlocks is Kenny B who is a caribbean style singer and the guy with the baseball cap is called Brace, a rapper/singer with a very soothing voice. They are flown to a faraway place with no distractions, no family or friends, and only have eachother for a period of 2 weeks, during wich the entire season gets made. each episode is dedicated to one of the singers, and this means that, in theory, they have about 2 days for preparing theri song for one episode. To figure out what songs to sing to honor the musician of the day by singing their (hit or favorite) songs. When all has been decided and planned out, they perform it live in front of the artist of the evening, and the other singers and the host, the only other people there are the band and likely someone refreshing the drinks. This makes for a intimate atmosphere in which the singers get to know eachother a lot better, learn about the other music styles and in the end, performing all these styles during that season. You can pick any song from that season, and it will be good, or at least enjoyable to watch and listen to. Anyway, keep up the great job Nephi, i really enjoy your reactions :)

I love this TV show.. "The best singer of The Netherlands".. where each year they have 6 singers.. and in every episode of the show 1 of the singers is the "guest" and the others sing his/her songs or songs the guest loves... it takes singers out of their comfort zone... this season with Tommie and Tania did show us some real amazing songs... The other people you see sitting there are the other singers.. Brace (a rapper) Maan (a pop singer who won the voice of Holland) and Anita Meijer (old time dutch singer) and Kenny B (a reggae like singer) and Denny Christiaan (a german schlager singer)

I'm sure every country has their amount of good singers. The only point is to get to know them and maybe to hear them together. This TV program does this very thing, which makes it one of my favorite things to hear and watch.

In case you don't know the concept behind the "Beste Zangers" tv show: Beste Zangers = Best Vocalists and the idea is to bring a group of vocalists together crossing various genres (pop, rock, hip hop, indie, folk, light music etc). Each episode one of the vocalists is 'guest of honour' and doesn't need to perform while the others either perform one of the guests songs or one that is special to them or their colleague might find fitting. It is one of the most popular tv shows here in the Netherlands and all because although the title implies it is a competition it is in fact not really. It is basically professional vocalist paying homage to their colleagues. Every seasons has its own surprises like many moons ago when Glennis Grace got her second breakthrough due to this show. This last season was the first time a classical vocalist joined the cast although in this case Tania Kross is as known for her 'heavy' classical work as doing crossover projects. For me personally the performances of Denny Christian were the surprise especially in the more quieter, introspective songs. Over here he is mostly known for his work as a party-singer (in a field of music that is referred to as Schlager music, a very corny style of music although still very popular here and in Germany / Austria) showing that he is probably mismanaged for a long long time and should have had a long career as a serious singer.

Just so you know the history behind this song: Its original is from the legendary Freddy Mercury (UK) and Montserrat Caballé (a Spanish operatic sopran). This song was written for (+ before) the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. After Mercury died in november 1991 this song became a huge hit. Here in our small, practical, no-nonsense nation great music is fortunately being sung and great artists are being tributed. @@NephiAcaling This song was written and composed for Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. After Feddies death in 1991 it was used as the opening song for the 1992 summer Olympics. At the time of recording Ms. Caballe was considered one of the best opera singers in the world and Freddie was Freddie, also the best. Amira Willingham performed this at a charity concert with Tim Akkerman for charity Ronald McDonald house Huis Arnhem. Unfortunately they had limited rehearsal time, but it was still an excellent performance considering Amira was just 12. Worth listening to even though it's a phone recording its actually very good.
