I rescued my chameleon from the wild. I live in Malta but I’m English and found her on a roof where I was working being cornered by 2 cats that were attacking her. So I picked her up went to release her in a field with lot’s of trees as me and my son went to put her in a tree we were amazed as she kept coming back to us...I mean she kept coming towards us. So I did some research with your help got an enclosure and 5 months on she is a happy member of our family. She’s a common but not to us she is special. She loves being hand fed crickets and mealworms Thanks for all your videos it’s been very helpful.

None will smell if kept correctly. You can breed crickets using vermiculite as bedding and that will erase the smell. I breed Dubia Roaches, Mealworms, Waxworms, Crickets, and Superworms in my room and I live in a single wide trailer. Dubia Roaches are amazing because they have a slow metabolism therefore your gut load lasts several days. Crickets, mealworms, and superworms are a lot faster. So you have to pretty much gutlod them the night prior to feeding and feed them off the next day.

What about fruit flies?? EVERYTIME I go to the pet store to get my cham food they’re out. Also, I have a baby not sure how old exactly probably 6-8 weeks she’s only eaten crickets I heard you can get baby larvae hornworms but since she’s small I don’t think so I’m unsure. What would you MAINLY recommend I feed her besides crickets?? I know that’s what the whole video was about but I’m just a little curious because I want to get her to trust me more and to really want to come out onto my hand from time to time so what would you use, as another main source of food for a baby around her age other than crickets. Another question not really relating to this but I saw a picture of a cham cage and it had like those long toothpick type things if you know what I’m talking about and they used some of those for their cage as branches? Is that ok to do? It was a baby and I was wondering if I should do that for my baby too or if it’s a bad idea? I plan on visiting my local lake place with lots of trees to find some branches for her enclosure as well how do you tell which branches don’t have tree sap, which ones to grab and are ok???
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
Fruit flies are really only for tiny babies. If she is taking down crickets, then she could also probably eat XS dubia roaches, BSFL, XS superworms, wax worms, etc. It's just about finding the appropriately sized feeder that is not wider than the width between their eyes. And remember variety is key. You shouldn't strive to just feed 1 or 2 main bugs. Use treat bugs to try and build trust. I have a video about that too. I'm not sure what you're talking about with the toothpicks. I just recommend using real branches from outside.

Locusts are also a great feeder. I just don't have access to them where I live. The more variety, the better!

Found a wild veiled chameleon where I live in Florida. He was trying to cross a busy road. I would assume he came from the orange groves next to the road and he fed himself on our local insects 🤔?
@NeptunetheChameleon Жыл бұрын
I would get him tested for parasites to make sure he didn't pick up anything from the wild bugs.

I got a new chameleon and I was wondering can I give him black beetles they smell bad.
@NeptunetheChameleon Жыл бұрын
Hmmm are the superworm beetles? Most chams don't like those. I'd stick to the bugs talked about in this video.
@crow41303 жыл бұрын
Thank you for all of your videos , I am a new owner and you are saving them !!! My chams are about 3/4 mos old should they eat more than just crickets ? And how old do they have to be to eat the horns etc
@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new chameleon! Definitely feed them more than just crickets. Dubia roaches, BSFL, and silkworms would all be great options. I would wait until they’re at least 6 months old until you feed hornworms since they get big really fast.

A lot of these insect, such as hornworms, arent even available in Belgium. Idk if in other countries in Europe...

I have a 6 month old veiled chameleon who only eats crickets. Is it safe for me to do the "tough love" approach to get her off crickets? I hate to restrict her diet when she is still so young and growing. Please reply! Many thanks!!!!

Have heard that Horn worms are great for hydration (you confirmed). But you said very fatty, others have indicated they should be one of the main sources of food, supplemented by the others. Silk worms were the extra fatty that should be no more than once a week. My Chameleon (veiled) loves horn worms more than life itself
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
I just re-watched my video (just to make sure I didn't misspeak) and confirmed that I don't say that hornworms or silkworms are fatty which is accurate. They are only 3% fat according to this chart: www.reptifiles.com/feeder-insect-nutrition-facts-chart/. The reason I said hornworms are a treat is because they are low in protein at only 9% compared to other feeders that are closer to 20%. Silkworms can be feed as a staple feeder and are an excellent choice being low in fat, high in protein, and high in calcium. Superworms are the ones you want to use as a treat and are high in fat. Hope this clears things up!
@scotttasler75034 жыл бұрын
@@NeptunetheChameleon yes that is correct. I re listened too. I enjoyed the video and somehow did an incorrect recall. Chameleons will be happier getting more horn worms due to your highlight/confirmation they are great for hydration. Apologize for the incorrect statement in first posting.

Are crickets a good staple food?

Yes. But have to keep in mind variety is very important in a chameleon’s diet.

Yes

I mostly feed mine banded crickets. Only one will eat the dubia. Bsfl flies seem to trigger hunger strikes. But very hard to get enough flies to feed 10 chams. An even amount per feeding. My big boy will eat like 25-30 in about a hour. Hornworms I only feed monthly or extra hydration in the winter. An silkworms seem to be the best. But very costly an hard to get them to grow. Hornworms are easy to grow. Long as food is added. Watching this video got me overwhelmed. With cricket low ball numbers:(
@NeptunetheChameleon Жыл бұрын
This is a pretty old video at this point and I am working on redoing it. But in the meantime let me give you some peace of mind and say that crickets are a totally fine bug to feed to your chameleon regularly. I'd also suggest feeding the BSFL in the larvae stage since they are high in calcium.

Can I assume that maybe waxes would be OK to feed a juvenile a lill more often just to keep there weight up so long as I offer many other feeders in combination with them?
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
Hmm in theory. But you run the risk of your cham becoming picky and only wanting to eat treats. It would also be a good idea to use wax worms as treats as a way to have your cham associate you with positive experiences to help with trust. A young cham will have no issue putting on weight in a healthy environment and a variety of feeders.
@shepardsforgeh20314 жыл бұрын
OK thank you. I have a vast array of different feeders available to me i just know that from hatchling to juvenile to adult its really important to get the diet right. Its just as important as the environmental factors as these will have an effect on there eating habits as well!

The big guy Ziggy looks at Dubai Roaches with utter contempt and never taken one. Would love to find a UK supplier of those Horn Worms though but they’re apparently illegal to sell here. Never liked the smell from crickets - not an offensive smell but noticeable.

Any ideas on why a 5 month old (Panther) chameleon would actively start avoiding crickets and roaches? Everything was fine until his 2nd shed. This was 3 weeks ago and he has only eaten one cricket. He will eat meal and super worms but I know he needs more in his diet. I just don't understand where the aversion came from??
@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
Because mealworms and superworms are high in fat. They’re basically candy bugs and the other bugs are broccoli. Here is my video about how to get them to eat the healthier bugs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZKmlnyhhqpkntk
@mikeyvlogs2 жыл бұрын
okay so i’m gonna be getting a 3-1 month old veiled cham in a couple weeks after i get everything for his cage setup and i just want to know what would be the best thing to feed them at that time in their life
@NeptunetheChameleon2 жыл бұрын
Make sure the chameleon is at least 3 months old. You don’t want to purchase one that is younger than that. At 3 months old they can eat all the things discussed in the video except hornworms. Hornworms get too big too fast for a baby.
@ruchop14014 жыл бұрын

Can chamelion eat flies and spiders?
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
Flies, yes. Spiders, I wouldn't, plus they seem too small. And I would not feed your chameleon flies from around your house or outside. Make sure you buy black solider flies, wax moths, hawk moths, silk moths, or blue bottle flies.
