Chameleons require a linear T5 UVB bulb and a heat bulb. Most keepers also choose to use a plant LED light to help the plants grow.
@mattaccetta40263 жыл бұрын
My veiled chameleon is about 14 months old. I was using the incorrect lighting system up to two months ago. My set up is not what you recommend but this is the best I could do for now until I move to a bigger apartment. My screened cage is 18“ x 18“ x 36“. My UVB light is called Zilla slimline tropical fixture and It includes tropical 25 UVB T8 and is 18 inches long. The fixture has a plastic lens over the light I know from watching your videos that the UVB cannot penetrate glass and I’m guessing plastic too. I removed the lens. Was that the right thing to do? I think it came with the lens because it shows a picture over the fixture over an 18 inch long glass fish tank type tank with a open top with no screen. I think it’s made this way so nothing could get into the light fixture like small Anoles lizards. I do have the correct heat bulb.
@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the plastic was meant to be taken off. I'd suggest using a 10/12% bulb if you are using a T8 fixture since they aren't as powerful as the T5s.

Is the 10.0 too much uvb? Is that possible?
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Berthelot Yes it’s possible, and yes it can be too much depending on your chameleon and setup. This is why solarmeters are recommended so you can know how much UVB you’re providing. If you don’t have a solarmeter, the 5.0 is the safer option.
@arielann583 жыл бұрын
I wanted to add the point that screen can filter out up to 50% of uvb just something to consider is all. Also they sell uvb cards that tests the output of uvb which lets you know if you need to change the bulb they are about $6. 🌞
@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
The recommendations that are made are taking into account the UVB that is cancelled out from the screen :) Without the screen top, a chameleon would be overexposed to UVB.

@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
Nope as long as you use a 24"x24"x48" enclosure. If you use a smaller enclosure (which is not needed) then you'd need to raise the T5 HO 5.0/6% bulb above the top of the cage to give you the correct gradients.

Two questions if you please. On the Ferguson chart, what is the correct number for a male Panther? Also, they don't appear to have ears. Can they hear or do they just go by sight and vibration?
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
I did a whole video on measuring the UVI of various UVB bulbs and talk about the levels needed for a panther that you might find interesting (even if my technique is a little flawed): kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2GwZ5ebYtV6gKc I also want to point you to the Chameleon Academy where Bill Strand is currently researching the Ferguson Zones needed for chameleons. Right now Bill Strand, along with Pete Hawkins & Jonathan Hill have found a UVI level of 3 is sufficient for a female chameleon to produce calcified eggs. That's not to say that is the only safe level, which is why more research is being done, but that's where the hobby is right now and what keepers are using for their panther chameleons both male and female. I'll link to some good resources so you can continue to do research yourself. 1. chameleonacademy.com/chameleon-cage-set-up-replicating-the-sun/ 2. www.chameleonforums.com/threads/the-truth-about-uvi.172065/ 3. chameleonacademy.com/chameleon-academy-podcast/ -- Search for the UVB episodes 4. www.jzar.org/jzar/article/view/150/89

To answer your second question, while chameleons do not have an external ear, they do have an inner ear. I'd like to think they can hear to a certain extent since a defensive chameleon will hiss. So I'd think other chameleons must posses the ability to hear that hiss. That's about as much as I know about chameleon ears. Chameleons are definitely visual communicators as apparent from their change in colors. I also think they feel vibrations since they will lick branches before walking on them, I think as a way for them to feel the vibrations but I'm not sure on that one. This isn't an area with a lot of info about chameleons yet. Feel free to share anything you find out in your research.

I’m getting my first chameleon tomorrow and have the whole setup ready I’m just waiting for the uvb to deliver today. I have a lot of plants in the enclosure so I’m worried that the 5.0 t5 HO reptisun won’t be enough and my chameleon would get mbd. Do you think it should be fine? The solar meter is a bit too pricey for me at the moment.
