I had Jackson’s chams 25 years ago but they only lived for about one year. There was very little info about keeping them back then and we just didn’t know enough! I’ve had my Jackson’s I have now for over two years and he’s healthy and doing great! Thanks for your very informative videos!

Question assumptions! Well done. One that I would like to add is the shape of the enclosure. I find my chameleon walks more side to side than up and down. A square enclose can work, or even a rectangular one is it's big enough. An added advantage is that UVB is more available, not just the sweet spot.
@NeptunetheChameleon

Yes great callout! I definitely think chams prefer to climb side-to-side at a diagonal versus up and down.

For even larger enclosures, I've seen a lot of success with birdcages. I have a 6ft tall birdcage for their summertime outdoor enclosure.
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon Жыл бұрын
There can be success with bird cages but they also come with additional risk and extra considerations. Bird cages let in more UVB than traditional screen enclosures when using a UVB bulb indoors which could be problematic depending on what bulb is being used. And with outdoor keeping the larger gaps in a bird enclosure could allow for bugs/critters to get inside your chameleon enclosure.

@@john75470 So sorry for your loss :( Average life expectancy for most species is 5-7 years. Sometimes the females are closer to 4-6 years since they lay eggs which can be hard on their bodies.

I really freaked out many times after I got a chameleon in November - I had tried to be ready but it turned out there is a lot of crap out there about chamelon care (as you very well know). I had to adjust a lot and buy new stuff, hopefully now things are OK and I'm only improving. BUT I was really upset that for instance pet shops give bad advice - partly some of this old methods, but I think partly only because they just don't care to look up the correct ways. It still makes me sad. Luckily I have now good sources of information (including you). Last comment - she is so calm on your arm! My girl does sometimes walk on me, but she is always going somewhere, using me just as a stepping stone or a bridge 😂

Thanks so much for your videos they help so much! I keep a humidifier going on all the time in my chameleon's enclosure. I see how it constantly being wet can be bad. I might just water heavier in the morning and in the evening too. But I was told to keep it what a humidity of 40-60. I barely can maintain it in the low 40s so I have been kept regular misting every four hours and the humidifier. Iv got a panther cham.

How do you keep your plants from not drowning from the dripper😭 I would assume the easy answer would be to not put the dripper right above the plant but I have a sand bin for my girl. It’s probably one of my biggest struggles
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon Жыл бұрын
I only use my dripper for 2-3 hours every few days so the plants have plenty of time to dry out. And I rotate the position I put my dripper.

I really hate the full mesh enclosures. Four reasons. 1) where i live glass is just more stable and reliable for temps/humidity. Mesh would be near impossible for many of the reptile species i keep. 2) a fully mesh enclosure does not allow me to go full planted bioactive pycho jungle without having to drain into a bucket then empty the bucket and hope you dont spring a leak anywhere... 3) i find them dangerous. Three of my current chams will come right up to the door and push against it to be let out onto the jungle wall or just to hang. An adult panther is fully capable of pushing the mesh door until it bulges outward enough to get a foot or a tail in the gap. In fact one of my jerks thinks its funny to undo the latch by pushing out, getting his tail wrapped around the latch from the top while theres a gap and climbing up. This has resulted in his tail getting stuck once that i know about, thankfully to no lasting damage. I knew one girl whos chameleon degloved part of their hand after pushing against the door and getting it through the small gap when it was a baby. The baby struggled being trapped and ended up hurting itself badly. At least with glass the latch is secure at the bottom and being less flexible wont bulge weirdly like hard plastic/cheap metal framed mesh does. 4) again, injury. I find that a lot of time between growing up stages a young chameleon will climb the mesh walls and sometimes get a claw stuck. This can lead to a ripped out claw or injured foot if they struggle hard enough. 5) Another reason. The bigger species of chameleon like the parsons or the mellers can actually push hard enough against the mesh that it seperates from the frame over time, giving escape opportunities. Especially if they're a screen climber the weight of bigger species alone will put stress on the way the mesh is held in place by the frame. I found that out as my malagasy giant was eagerly trying to get out during meal time and the whole mesh door just ripped at the top and started to rip down the sides. He could very well have escaped outside given his size (and corresponding reach) and the window being open due to circulation and it being summer if i hadlt been there. He was also a screen climber and would push his whole side agaist the door when shedding. I had tought i was being clever getting around the space issue by combining mesh enclosures to make one bigger one but apparently not.
