This video was SOOOO helpful! I'm currently an employee at PetSmart and I have always been big on making sure all animals get the proper care. I felt like there was so much I still didn't know so I have been researching all the different animals we sell to ensure I am providing our pet parents with the proper/best care information to ensure their pets live their best lives. I even have a tiny notebook full of all my notes about each animal and what they all need :)

I hope you are no longer a PetSmart employee, because selling people the "chameleon start kit" (which I'm sure you don't have a choice but to do) is like giving a death sentence to the chameleon they are buying.

Its sad how much petsmart employees lack knowledge on their pets that they sell, when i first got my cham there they recommended all the wrong things!! and i trusted their knowledge (ive done all my research now and my cham is healthy) because i would think they know their stuff.
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the hardest part -- we want to trust them, but really it's on the owner to do their own research. It's unrealistic for a pet store employee to know the intricate care requirements for as many species of animals that they carry. That being said, they should still make sure their care guides are accurate and make sure they carry the products needed to keep these animals alive and healthy.

We made the bold move of keeping our 50-ish day old female Veiled Chameleon with our hermit crab. Within the first three days, she was found 3/4ths on the ground for the first time, testing the waters of the crabs’ salt pool… I was shocked, but let her do her thing. Made sure both pools were fresh and clean when she moved away from it. She seemed to know exactly what she was doing, and there hasn’t been any sort of conflict between the two species. I’m not worried.. 😌

I have a(guessing) 5 month vieled I just got, bought the cage kit, hate it, too small immediately bought some silk vines and a couple live plants. Added sticks and a dripper. Anyway had some crickets in the cage and thought to put a couple pieces collard greens in the bottom to get crickets down off the top. He immediately climbed down and ate half of them. The next evening they were gone. And he ate on the creeping fig. Could hydration be the issue for eating veggies like that? He's somewhat dehydrated hard getting him to drink. Slight orange poo.

It's not uncommon for veileds to eat their plants. It's thought that they do this in the wild to help add some roughage to their mainly soft-bodied bug diet. What if you set up a bioactive enclosure so you don't have a bare bottom? I know a ton about those (Not an expert just done tons of research and applied them to my only plant yes a plant not an animal) First prepare yourself a drainage layer that's about 3 inches deep using egg crate trays (the stuff that looks like a square grid that's used for aquariums) and some window screens this prevents substrate from getting into the drainage layer. Optional layer: LIGHT Activated charcoal layer (Dust Free) this is put underneath the substrate and helps it stay clean and healthy and is also good for springtails which are essentials for proper bioactive setups. Or mix a LIGHT amount in the substrate itself to much isn't healthy for the substrate. The Substrate Layer: The substrate needs to be light and drain very well but still hold moisture to be damp not wet. Soggy substrates leads to it being unhealthy causing bad smells and mold. There is a ton of recipes out there for very good substrates so your own research is necessary. But again the only thing I've taken care of is a plant so I do want to know your opinion on this because I do want to own a chameleon one day and if bioactive's are good for them.

Veileds are definitely known for being plant munchers!
@bradleythomas33 жыл бұрын
Not to nick pick, but veiled chameleons are still technically insectivores even though they eat plants. The vast majority of their diet is insects, plants are a rarity. If they could only eat insects it would be an obligate insectivore, which I think most species are.

That's clearly a picture of the chameleon kit in the pamphlet and using that style uvb will give your chameleon MBD within months. These pet stores are evil and responsible for so many early pet deaths.

What kind of chameleon do you have? That's too small of a cage for most species.

@@NeptunetheChameleon oh well I'll try get a bigger one and my cham is a male I think so what do u recommend :)
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
You'll want something around 61cm x 61cm x 122cm for a male chameleon. Here is my video about cage sizes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4GTpoZ7pKuriqM

you dont need to feed them fruits and veggies but they are a good treat
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
I would respectfully disagree with that, and say there are no known benefits to feeding your cham fruits or veggies, even as treats. If you have any documentation or resources that say otherwise, please share them :)
@NeptunetheChameleon4 жыл бұрын
Better treats for a chameleon would be superworms, hornworms, and wax worms.

@@NeptunetheChameleon well if you think about it of your chameleon was dehydrated you could feed them water melon as a treat and that would help

There's so much conflicting info out there
@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely true. I always say the hardest parts about keeping a chameleon is getting their enclosure set up right and knowing what care information to follow. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the person is able to explain WHY they are making the recommendations they are and to fact check them. Feel free to reach out with any questions, I’m always happy to help 💚
