The song tells the tale of Durin I The Deathless, the first and oldest of Dwarf Kings during the Year of the Trees. He earned his name the Deathless due living extremely long for a Dwarven age (which was over 2000 years). In Tolkien's lore the Dwarves had a prophecy where Durin would be reincarnated 6 times as a great king. Whenever a dwarf would become a great king of Durin's Folk he would be named Durin. Good example would be King Dain II Ironfoot's Grandson Durin VII also known as Durin The Last for he was Durin's last reincarnation and last known king of the dwarves. Based on Dwarven stories, Durin was the first od Dwarves to wake up and while he was roaming around, he named the mountains and dells. The "Mirrormere" is a lake located near the eastern gate of Khazad-dum (Moria). Durin saw a reflectoin of the stars in Mirrormere, and they looked like a crown on his head, and because of the unusual circumstances (it was day when he gazed into the lake) he took it as a sign that in this place he should create his kingdom. This took place in the "elder days", before the First Age, during the Years of the Trees. The "Western Seas" did not pass away, A single sentence was broken down by them, the whole sentence is "In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away" Nargothrond and Gondolin were Elvish realms in Beleriand before the battle with Dark Lord Morgoth. This sentence refers to the days before the destruction of these Elven realms (during the fight against Morgoth). Beyond Western Seas refer to Aman and the Undyng Lands which Elves call their homeland (this is also where Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Galadriel go at the end of the Movie). This whole sentence is basically telling that Durins days was before the mighty kings of these Elven realms were destroyed and the kings souls returned to the Undying Lands (After Elves die, their sould return to the Halls of Mandos where it is cleansed and given a new body to live out reest of eternity in the Undying Lands) The last lines of the song refer to how Durins crown is still reflected in Mirrormere, and that his people is still waiting for his reincarnation (As I mentioned in first paragraph.). Hope you dig into the lore ofLotR as it is super interesting, and the feeling you will find hearing this song after reading the lore will be very different.

Thank you, I've read about the lore before, but this is a very neat summary. But what I haven't understood is why Durin VII (the 7th) is called The Last. Because he is only the 6th reincarnation, if Durin I was the initial, then its first reincarnation is Durin II, etc. Can anyone please explain?

@@rustyshackleford6906 Agreed, Tolkien would probably not be as harsh on the movies as Christopher was, but I doubt it would be of his taste when some of his favorite elements are ommited in favor of action. Though I think he would enjoy the artistry of some of the settings (particularly the Shire, which sticks really close to his illustrations). He undoubtedly would be delighted to find appreciation for the poetry and musicality of his work, especially when in life, most of the interaction he had with younger fans (and not with peers who liked his work) were with people not all that concerned with that.

The lines are shown as they are sung, and to keep the rhymes and cadence consistent some sentences cover multiple lines. This is very common in poetry. So just to clarify your confusion: "In Elder days before the fall of mighty kings in Nargothrond and Gondolin, who now beyond the western seas have passed away. The world was fair in Durin's day." Basically saying that the world was beautiful before the elven kings fell against Morgoth, and their lands sank beneath the sea.

I always thought the "stains" referred to craters that look like darker spots on the moon's surface. Stands to reason that a stainless moon would have solidified recently or, in the Tolkien mythos, was created recently. A recently created/solidified celestial body wouldn't have had the time to accrue craters. It also fits with the rest of the lyrics around it.

Also, it was said that Tilion, maia and guardian of the Moon, was drawn to Arien, also a maia and the guardian of the Sun. Tilion occasionally followed Arien through the sky but when catching up to her, the Moon became burned by Arien's heat when in close proximity to her. That's how those stains or spots came to be. This chase in the sky could mean many years, so the world was not new nor fresh for the dwarves when they saw the stains.

@@Redneck-Alcatraz Both have the same root word ("Cors", which is the diminutive of "Corpus", which is Latin for "Body"). It could be that both were the same thing at one point, that men wore "cors(l)ets" as close fitting body armor for protection, and women would use an adapted form that allowed them to shape their bodies, with the rigid material keeping things in line.

"The Light of Sun and Star and Moon, in Shining LAMPS of Crystal Hewn, Undimmed by cloud or shade of night, there shone forever fair and bright." They're literally describing how they lit the Halls of Moria. They had giant big-ass chandeliers of crystal that captured the light from outside, reflected and refracted it around, and used it to light the giant halls of Moria. Those chandeliers are long gone now, broken and destroyed by the Orcs that inhabit that place, and which hate the light. This song is essentially the Dwarves' Creation Myth. Others have gone over the details of the timeline, but this song summarizes dwarven history up to the time of the Third Age of Middle Earth: "We began in humility. We had a golden age, we built splendors that people still marvel at in their ruin. We fell from grace, but we still remain. We abide, we linger, and we wait for the return of our King."

Durin was one of the original Seven Created then adopted by Eru Illuvatar. Only becoming fully sentient after he awoke alone in Mount Gundabad. Which one could argue that Durin was the first TRUE dwarf instead of one of the Seven briefly given life by Eru when Aule believed he had errored and offended their creator by playing creator. But because of his willingness to destroy his creations, even if he loved them as his own children, Eru stopped Aule and adopted the Seven and places all but Durin into pairs all over the world to awaken after the Elves.

@@Redneck-Alcatraz welcome. Tolkien took a lot of influence from his own religion of Roman Catholicism and mixed it with other cultures. Like Middle-Earth being like Midgard of Norse mythology and where we all live. I even hear he would talk to a priest he was friends with when refining the Silmarilian that covered the creation of Middle-Earth to the Hobbit. One would say we are still living in the Forth Age of Arda on Middle-Earth after the defeat of Sauron. A pity Tolkien passed away before he had cemented the lore he wished to create for his works. But the year he passed couldn’t have been more fitting for him either. 1973. As the poem for the One Ring says: Three Rings for the Elven-Kings under the Sky. Seven for the Dwarf-Lords in their Halls of Stone. Nine for Mortal Men doomed to Die. One for the Dark Lord on his Dark Throne. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to Rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness Bind them. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. Ash Nazg Durbatulûk, Ash Nazg Gimbatul, Ash Nazg Thrakatulûk, Ahh Burzum-Ishi Krimpatul. 3791 and he passed from Middle-Earth on 1973.

some things are not obvious in the lyrics. when it says "in elder days, before the fall of mighty kings in nargothrond and gondolin, who now, beyond the wester seas, have passed away" (added commas for clarification) reffers to those kings having fallen and died beyond the western seas, in elder days also, a corslet is a type of breastplate armor ;)

This is why I'll always believe that reading The Silmarillion first and then LOTR second is better than doing it the other way around, not a popular way of course. Song of Durin means a whole lot more when you realize who Durin was and the history of Middle Earth, a lot of it means much more and has more weight if you do. But as everything is in Middle Earth, everything fades, even the Dwarves are believed to have gone extinct not long after the 4th Age (up for debate but it makes sense).

Durin the first was the first dwarf to awake after Aulë was forced to put his creation to sleep. Our Durin, the last king of Moria, was Durin the 7th I think? Corslet is upper body armor, so protective stuff make by a blacksmith (the L is indeed important). Look at that, watching Schola Gladiatora videos actually helped me understand something that would otherwise have confused me too. As for the verses, I understand the first verse to be about the first age, second is second age, and last one is third age. Mirrormere is the name of the lake where Frodo and friends almost become dinner for the monster
