Blindness is weird to think about. Of course you can't see white or black, as that would involve seeing, but what do you see? Try to imagine you just see clear, with nothing there. Because you can perceive color in the world around you, it's impossible. You cannot imagine just clear, there is always a color behind the clear, no matter how hard you try. Which raises the question of "What takes up a blind person's sight?" I think Dan's explanation was a tiny bit shit considering it just mentioned not being able to see your hand anymore, but you can see what was behind your hand instead. But you have to be able to see something, right? Just because your eyes don't work properly doesn't mean there isn't something there. It has to be completely black (some blindness is caused by the prevention of light passing through the cornea) or something white (I'm no scientist by any reach, but I would assume being blinding by bright lights would burn your eyes in a sense). Like if you're 100% deaf, you still HEAR nothing. Nothing is commonly described (oddly enough) as a sound, so technically you are still hearing, just you aren't hearing anything. (Weird, right?) Things like the lack of touch and taste are a bit easier to imagine, but blindness still confuses the fuck out of me. Kinda terrifying considering my entire life is visual shit (except for some music, but how do I click on music without seeing?) Is it possible to be born blind, and since you have never perceived color, just see pure clear? What if you were blinded during your life? At that point you have seen and can recognize color, so do you still see pure clear? How does you brain do that? Cope with that? Hell, even PROCESS that? Seriously some weird and trippy shit, and we need more scientists on this now.

Things this game should've done: - LOD instead of draw distance. - Cloth physics. - A memory mechanic. You forget the path you've made after a while, but the more you tread the path the longer it stays. So you can increase your familiarity with certain areas of the game. - Maybe would be cool if you could throw objects to 'see' (hear) the world ahead.

Depending on how familiar you are with a specific area, say your home, it's not too difficult to build a sort of mental map of where things are without sight. So, while the map lingering after you visit spots seems a bit odd as far as "sight" goes, it still fits the blindness theme. Assuming the back yard is a place she's familiar with... This makes about the third or fourth "you are blind" style game I've come across now and I like the trend.

It would be interesting if the paths you already crossed became subtly corrupted, like they go slightly the wrong way, and are more wrong the further back you go, particularly the parts that don't have an item of interest like a fountain to help you remember, just because of how fallible human memory is. You'd retain the most detail on sections where you were "wrong", like when the fountain turned into a drain, because our errors tend to stick in the brain better, so those might be more firmly in the world. Also areas you cross repeatedly tend to be pretty well known. I dunno, maybe they do this! This was a cool game concept.

It's a myth that may or may not have science behind it that when you lose one sense you enhance others, perhaps her brain, not needing to put any effort into the sight part, has increased her memory so she can almost have a picture perfect memory of where she walked It makes sense when you think about all the blind people that travel around by foot alot of places, they must remember how every little detail of their path is so that they don't mess up and fall and know the route
@TF2CrunchyFrog9 жыл бұрын
It's a very pretty game, but I feel it's rather lacking. It relies too much on this one gimmick, but the thing is, this isn't even a new and groundbreaking idea. It's been done before. Tarol Hunt, writer and artist of the Fantasy webcomic 'Goblins - Life through their eyes' used this method of visualization too, a couple of years ago. In his comic, a village of goblins is attacked by a murderous anti-paladin, and as the goblins are being brutally slaughtered one by one, one elderly blind goblins (who had appeared a few times as a background character) tries to run into the woods and hide. The scenes are shown from the blind goblin's perspective. Thunt solved the problem of showing a blind character's perceptions in a purely visual medium like a comic just like this game does it: an empty void with the blind character in the middle, in which sounds and obstacles form scattered islands of perception that suddenly pop up, the only "solid" space is the ground beneath him. Screams fading in the distance. The sound of breathing, of footsteps, a person in heavy armor, coming closer. The smell of fresh blood on the axe he lifts up. What bothers me more is that the "story" and landscape starts to feel fake. So many questions: Where the hell are her parents? Did the girl have friends before the accident? Do these friends never visit her? Why is she sitting in the garden all year, doesn't she have to go to school... a school for the blind, or privat tutelage, whatever. Why does she leave without telling her parents? When is this game set? Modern day? Why didn't the girl receive a seeing-eye dog, or at least a cane, for god's sake, or any of the other technological aids to help blind people. A GPD with voice output would be damn useful. The game seems to be set in an industrialized country, not in the back of nowhere in the 18th century. Which brings me to the other point: the landscape. It's clearly a rural environment shaped by humans, with bridges, footpaths, fences, so it's not a total wilderness... yet apart from a bit of bird song it's entirely quiet, far too quiet. WHERE ARE ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE? Other children, playing. People working in their gardens, talking. People walking their dogs, or bicycling, or jogging. There might be horses, cows, sheep beyond those fences that would make noise, and could be smelled. WHERE ARE THE CARS? Cars, planes, church bells ringing, radio music. It' must be in the middle of the day (the girl can feel the warmth of the sun to tell it's day, and I assume at night her invisible parents would get her inside and into bed) The landscape is far too empty and boring.

+TF2CrunchyFrog Couldn't all those questions be answered by 'this might be early 1900s in an agricultural zone'? Because she's clearly entering a farming area it would seem, we don't know if its day or night, I'd assume night just to screw with everyone's sense of perception so that could explain away the people (even though it's more probable that none of the people who worked on this game had good voice acting skills so they just removed people entirely arbitrarily)

A better explanation for blindness: try to look out of your elbow, or your hand, you cant. What you "see" with those, you see if you are blind. If the optical part of the brain is still active, and only the eyes are at fault, the ears take over. This is why some blind people can echolocate. They "see" sounds. This means they can make out where stuff is, and how big it is. Go ahead and correct me if any of this is incorrect/inaccurate.

If you have never done this do it. Go into a room walk to the wall farthest from the door, and close you eyes so you can't see and then try walking to the door without opening them at all. You can use your hands to try and feel objects to navigate and that's it. Better yet once you close you eyes have someone move a few objects around in the room like small tables or chairs. Now imagine having to do that for the rest of your life. Rest of this is just a story about how I went blind for a few minutes. I remember when I went blind for like 2 minutes. My eyesight came back, but my eyes were open and I couldn't see anything and this was during a shop class in school so I though "Oh someone put a rag over my eyes" so I felt them and nothing was there so I then I start freaking out in my head and move it to look around and I see nothing. So then I say to the teacher, we were learning how machines work, "I can't see" and he says "What do you mean you can't see?" thinking I can't see what he is doing and I just say "I can't see anything what's going on" so finally everyone looks at me and they said my face was pale like just pure white almost transparent looking. So the teacher grabs me bring me to a table to sit on and I'm reaching and I don't know where it is so my hand is just waving around in the air and he has to pick me up to sit me on it. After like a minute my eyesight comes back. Trust me when I say even though I was blind for like 2 minutes, but got my sight back it is terrifying.

If you've ever had an ocular migraine, you know what Dan means by nothing instead of darkness. I've had blind spots that covered nearly half of my vision before, and it is such a strange feeling. You can tell that your vision is disappearing, but you can't tell exactly where because your brain tries to fill in the gaps. It is very disorienting.

OI NERDCUBED! Please, please, PLEASE play *deep breath*... Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist. It's on Steam and is totally free. Oh, and if it's anything to you it's made by the same people that made the Stanley Parable.

this game would be amazing if when the things you already filled in left your vision they would shift cause you can't exactly remember where stuff is

Strictly speaking, blindness doesn't mean no sight, it means being very, very hard of sight or worse.
