1) this was the Ultimate universe version, and doesn't exist anymore. 2) the mainstream version frequently gets a stint in human form when someone, usually Reed, finds a way to turn him back. But it's always temporary. This was finally explained in a story where the Fantastic Four meet God (in the form of Jack Kirby) who explains the universe always turns Ben back to his Thing form because it's dramatically sound.

I love the shell concept! Like enough of his skin or body needs to absorb hits, heavy hits too and each piece of stoned skin falls off and all that built up force is now kept close in/to his body and once the last piece of stone falls, he has now absorbed enough hits in kinetic energy and force he can release his true form and his strength is 100x stronger! After all the power is used up, his skin will start to grow back again because his body is starting to decay or become weak after using that much energy. He needs to manage enough energy tho to regrow his skin like cocoon/healing patches otherwise the effects could be deadly. However if he’s able to regrow enough skin and runs out of energy his body will pick up the rest but he needs to be kept under watchful eye or he needs a little energy to start the full natural healing cycle or if things get really bad, he can reuse an old piece of rock skin to reactivate his healing process or something After all his skin grows back, he then enters hibernation mode which his body is formed but it’s completely smooth because his main body is incubating itself and when he’s done he must be willing to “crack “ out of his cocoon. Once again creating the iconic cracked rock skin.

Sue Storm is SMASH worthy as we already know ;) What many others need to know is Ben Grimm grew up in a very tough NYC neighborhood, had many street fights. Was an excellent athlete & former wrestler with advanced combat training. Hulk is a nerd scientist.. despite his strength Bruce / Hulk should get beat up in most fights with Ben / Thing. So many comic book writers & editors don’t know about how real fighting works, strength is a tiny aspect of hand to hand combat.. great SKILL beats STRENGTH.
