Cirdan is the embodiment of Elven wisdom and memory in Middle Earth. For he sacrificed not just his truest desire, but those he loved most in the quest he was charged with: to provide a way home for those who remained... or returned to... Middle Earth. He was the living reminder... that the Valar and Eru... had not forsaken the elves. He was an aged soul watching and waiting until all who had remained were at last borne hence on swift wind when the Call of the West could no longer be denied.

That is so, but also he gave the ring of fire to a worthy person because he really did not need it. The ring of fire was made to amplify destructive powers and to aid in combat. Cirdan was a shib builder and an architect. He was a great creator and had no use for a destructive tool. Now, if they had given him the ring of water...well, he might have kept that one. :)
@Freedmoon445 ай бұрын
@@mancamiatipoolawell he needed it de facto to provide Elves Hope and delay their end on middle earth, him being the single greatest hope of the elves means that his ring brought the most hope etc... But Gandalf he knew would one day give courage to the men (like in Minas Tirith) and would also give courage to himself in part due to the Ring, which is an effectively better use of the Ring. However no matter which Ring he wouldnt have hesitated, his heart was looking West Valinor was where his heart was, no matter how much he looked at middle earth, its never been his duty to protect Middle Earth, fight the Darkness etc... his duty is to make sure all those who wishes to leave for Valinor and are accepted there does leave, he didnt need any Ring, any power to acheive his duty, he already had the power to do that, and his greatest wish, to cross to Valinor was always going to eventually be acheived, and no Power in Middle Earth not even the One Ring could allow him to reach Valinor against the wishes of the Valar. He has no need for power, thus there are no need for hesitation so long as he knows who Gandalf is and what he will do

And as the Last Ship sailed on beyond the bent waters of the world, the mists began to part in welcome, for it bore at its helm one who had dreamt of sailing this course--dreamt when it had not been the only Straight Road. Cirdan, ancient and grey, beheld the white shores of Tol Eressea, which he had twice before seen depart without him, and his eyes glittered with unshed tears. "Eldest," murmured his companion, though he as well could barely speak for the sight, "is it bitter, I wonder, to at last have one's dream come so easily after so long a wanting?" "Bitter? Bitter, no, except perhaps in such a fashion as bitterness leavens the sweet to ease its coming." And now the old elf's eyes glittered with mirth as well as tears, and a smile cracked his bearded face. "For I alone among the Eldalie have known the depths of hunger to know true satiety, the deepest thirst to know the quenching. O! I will see Elwe again! May he look upon me and see my beard, and think me a wizened invalid thou brought to serve you wine on this long voyage!" And his laughter rang out like a great bell of brass, its clapper long muffled and kept from sounding. Celeborn himself could naught but smile, for as he looked upon the Eldest of the Elves in Middle-Earth, he knew that none would mistake him for any but who he was. The flame of Cirdan's spirit, undimmed since Elder Days and which had burned brightly beside a Ring of Power, shone forth from him in his rejoicing, and in answer the bells of Tol Eressea sounded in welcome--for their brother long afield had at last returned to the Undying Lands.

Cirdan enabled the Elven diaspora from Middle Earth, he helped to build the last Elven safe havens in the late First Age (of the Sun) when Morgoth's armies were running amok in Beleriand, he built the Gray Havens, he redirected the first Numenorian Army in the Second Age when Sauron threatened to take over all of Eriador and the north-west of Middle Earth and thus saved Gil-Galad's people from Sauron, he also gave Gandalf the Elven Ring of Fire which helped ensure Gandalf's mission became a success. And above all else he suffered sea-longing for tens of thousands years, he watched hundreds of thousands of Elves leave Middle Earth while he stayed behind and he STILL made sure to provide the last ever boat to set sail to Valinor and ONLY then did he at last sail to the undying lands. He was there from the beginning of his race and was there when Elves left Middle Earth entirely. Legend!

As someone, who hasn't read the books, I wonder how there didn't seem to be any animosity or a sense of betrayal between Celebor and Galadriel, since the latter more or less "abandoned" the former for the time being, when she boarded the ship without him... Do you think there was a mutual understanding, that they'd someday meet again in Valinor, when the time was right and it's just a "mortal-thing" to think otherwise? ;) Also, brilliant, or shall I say "mithril-like" content, I love how you make one feel as if you were talking about real ancient history, looking forward to the next one
@AnnaMarianne2 жыл бұрын
Tolkien wrote that for the Elves it was normal for the husband and wife to spend even long periods of time separatedly, as they pursued their own goals. Galadriel and Celeborn lived apart already earlier, in the Second Age. So when Galadriel chose to pass over the Sea before Celeborn did, from the Elvish point of view that would be normal and acceptable. That said, you can hear from Celeborn's words to Aragorn in RotK that he is saddened by Galadriel leaving already, as it would be a while until they would see again.

2:00: Just like Day-Day, June 6 of 1944. Am quite fascinated that Cirdan also took part in land conflicts personally, as mentioned at the Last Alliance. As an aside, I really pity the Cirdan from Battle for Middle-earth's II's Sauron campaign. The Grey Havens sure got got by orc naval forces... wonder if such battles also occurred in the book canon? 15:41: How long, and was it slender or scruffy? 16:33: The end of the Fourth Age, more likely.

I’m rewatching this video🔥 I love the great city’s of Middle Earth. The Gray Havens sound so nice. I’d like to go there.

I can just imagine the look on Cirdan’s face once he finally gets to see “white shores, and beyond them a far green country into a swift sunrise.” I can imagine it would be a complicated mix of happiness and relief.

He's Noldor right? Hadn't he seen them before or stayed behind?

@@TheMasonK I always feel so bad for Cirdan, watching everyone else leave as he stays there building his ships for 10,000 years. Can't imagine how it must have felt for him when his own ship finally departed.

An amazing character and one of so many that you just wish they'd have made some more time for in the movies. Hopefully he will play a big part in the TV series and just hope the writing and acting does this incredible character justice. A huge responsibility for those who will write and portray him.
