Hey guys, Logan here. I'm seeing so many comments regarding how old my PC is, and for context, we don't have the money for a huge $1000/$2000 PC, so I got it from someone who builds PCs out of passion. He didn't seem to have much money either, but it was enough to make me happy at the time. I've also seen comments regarding the upgrades at the end. I definitely did not expect him to upgrade it for no extra cost, and I am still super thankful for Danny because of it. Fantastic video!

Dont pay attention to some of those comments. For some, they think everyone needs an i9 and 4090, which is.. insane. Your happiness with the PC is the only that matters when it comes to your PC, not these other buttheads.

So many people can't afford a good computer let alone any computer. That upgrade was great for him. He was happy with a 7870 he will be over the moon on a 580. Great job. Most of the computing world doesn't use newer hardware and are perfectly happy. Its other people unhappiness that brings hate comments.

When you said blender crashed and he described the gradual problems, my instant thought was either broken RAM or anything related to it (motherboard lanes, memory controller). Now those GCN cards are amazing, but a lot of them eventually had cracked solder joints from heat cycling and thermal paste just not keeping up. But the well kept runs are still chugging along well over a decade later.

GPU is getting worn out and can't handle the unstable power from the cheap PSU. You nailed it. In fact, it is probable that dirty power from the cheap PSU is why the GPU is degrading in the first place. An RX580 may not seem impressive to a PC snob but when you look at it from a statistical standpoint, you doubled his rasterization performance and quadrupled his VRAM. You opened up the door for him to play some AAA titles that were released in this decade, something a 7870 won't do because of the DX feature level.

I know why it crashing with old power supply and on ups not. Logan if you read test it if you can, i did have a same problem, it is in wall outlet then power suppy, i did have a fauty power outlet that i found now after 15 yrs., i am from Europe so i dunno if you have ground in electicity wires in houses, so problem is when ground is not there or electr. power installation is myb faulty now, then it damage you're PSU and UPS filtered a lot of power for it to work, power from power plant is filtered from them(power plant) and not in you're household Ups have a battery that filter power to supply, so it doesn't work in house power outlet good and it myb worn out wires in the wall of house. i changeg psu from 2010 with same problems 2 times, 15 yr later i found that power outlet was faulty and gorund was not connected long time ago. After 2015 pc crashed same, changed again power suppy with 80gold 750w, after 3 years from now, and my pc is crashing again now!, i have Ryzen 5 5500 and rtx 3050, so it doesn't take a lot of power and it is not spaceship of pc in preformance. Now i know it is the power outlet in the house is bad, that you're pluggin in pc or power extension cabel is bad and you need to replace it if you wanna be safe from crashing any time soon!

You earned a sub from me. This was a good video from beginning to end. I almost gave you criticism for giving him his old pc back, but we got me good and that was so awesome of you to do! W's to you! Also, I appreciate that you went into the event viewer to see if you could diagnose what cause the PC to crash. I'm not familiar with event viewer and I have a AM4 motherboard with a 5800X that randomly resets while livestreaming...I'm not joking. I can do anything else on that PC with no problem, but once I livestream, that's when it will randomly restart. It doesn't happen every time, but it happened enough times that I upgraded to AM5 with a 9700x.

My guess is the GPU needed to be reseated. I have run into that issue several times. I have also run into an issue with system memory not working correctly and it be something as simple as they need reseated or the CPU cooler is screwed down too tight. Just in the last day or two I had all 4 ram sticks in a secondary rendering machine and while task manager and the bios recognized all 4 sticks, only two of the ram sticks was being used. It turns out that two of the ram sticks because they were sitting outside the machine for a year, the traces had just enough oxidation that prevented all the traces from making proper contact with the ram slot. I couldn't see the oxidation with my eye but under a magnifying glass I could. I just used a piece of 300 grit sandpaper and lightly ran it across the traces once or twice and then wiped it off with a clean cloth. Suddenly the issue is gone. I have had the same issue with GPUs that have been sitting outside a machine without the little plastic cover that goes over the connector.

Yup that's what I found when digging deeper into the brand! I actually had a segment where I talked about that but cut it out due to the video being so long already 😣 a lot was actually cut out of this video because I actually worked on this system over the course of 3 days, testing and doing every single thing I could think of. The first rough cut of this video was 2 hrs long which would do horribly on KZbin, so I kept cutting a bunch of stuff that didn't necessarily add value to showing why his PC was crashing how I came up with my diagnosis of the root problem

Going to make my guess for the problem. I'm at 19:57 . My guess is bad hdmi port. Maybe psu with his gpu interacts in a weird way with power delivery. My last one i can think of is gpu thermal paste. Ok let's see if i am right.

Eyy so my second guess is correct. Yea the i thought this is because it's only when his psu and gpu are paired that it causes the crashing but not separately. My first guess would be the psu as well then the gpu. I don't know what kind of games he plays but he might want to start looking for an upgrade or a pre built.

After the mem test, I was wondering if it was the PSU and GPU together because I recently had the exact same issue with a fairly new Seasonic 850w PSU and a 51Risc RX 590 GME graphics card. The GPU was in the system with the Seasonic PSU for about a month when the graphics driver kept crashing over and over. Never thought the PSU was part of the problem, but when the GPU was installed in a different system, it worked fine. When the PSU was replaced, the PC worked fine. So bizarre. First time I've ever had that issue in the 25 years of PC teching!

the video card likely has lower ohm mosfets from age.. measure ohms on the 12V plugs. or a volt regulator going bad on the video card and Lame Sucky Power PSU is unable to give it smooth ripple free power due to caps dry from age. (test w oscilloscope i guess) so yes you are right on the diag.

An RX580 is a solid upgrade for that system. He's running a 3rd gen i7, the RX580 will perform well with that 3770. More of a graphics card would just bottle neck with that cpu and be held back.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with the core problems. I would also expect the motherboard to have, experienced so degradation but for what you gave him, nobody could really ask for more. That case is pretty sweet. he won't be upgrading to a 4090 though.

This was such a solid video. I think us as gamers and always having the latest tech crammed down our throats taints our views of something like this. Logan prior to this had a barely functioning pc with a power supply on its last leg and graphics card with 2gb of video memory that was likely on its last leg. These simple parts upgrades not only stabilized the system but also allows him with the faster card with more memory to play better games too. I think he appreciated this more than most who go from a fairly modern system to the latest and greatest crazy builds I see being given away on other channels. Solid video for sure

Yep fooled me, that was a good way to set the video, very cool and good assessment also I reckon, at first I thought maybe his card was an OC varient compared to the replacement but then you stated they were practically identical, so yeah a fair assessment I think.

Was the gpu properly seated when you went to remove it? That could have been the issue

had a similar experience with an rx580. took me a bit to figure out what was going on, but changed to an rtx 3060 and never had an issue after that.

I’m currently experiencing the same issue. I also build and repair computers. I rebuilt my desktop. I never upgraded the video card. It’s an old gtx 710 (2gb) . I’m about to order a used gpu soon when i can get a good deal.
