I built a NAS to give myself reliable, abundant, organized storage. In Part 2, I'll unbox the hard drives and RAM, install Debian 11 as the operating system, and finish up the cable management in the case.

if you use the Proxmox repo or the proxmox kernel you can easily get native ZFS that doesn't break with updates, and Proxmox doesn't prevent you from using it as you would use any regular Debian.

+1 for Debian and zfs. That's what I use and have to say zfs is amazing and very advanced. It makes me feel very secure about my data but I always have additional backups too. I have been using Debian for about 8 years and dont think I'll ever switch. Thank you for recording and sharing the video!

Thank you so much for this video and also your build lists! I already upgraded my current system with this case. I have 5 SATA drives and 1 SSD yesterday running and was worrying how to cool the drives. Stay awesome and ignore the idiot below who said it was too long. I myself appreciated the detail. Cheers!

Can't wait to see how you configure this. Great video

After Debian 6, if I remember correctly, sudo is installed only when you leave the root password field blank during installation. If you set root password, then sudo isn't installed.

Interesting, I didn't know the installer would do that! Maybe next time I'll just leave it blank.

Nice build! thnx for taking the time and effort to make the part 1 and part 2 build vids... I don't see the results vid? Power usage, transfer speeds... any updates? Thnx again for the detailed examples and instructionals! Subbed and liked!

It's one of the next two videos I'd like to make. Short answer, the NAS works as designed and has been rock-solid for several years now. The third video will largely be about the software configuration I'm running on it, and maybe some extremely basic performance stats. (Probably won't have power usage, as I have no tools to measure that.)

"So they went with shark tooth fins to cut through the air..." And cut through your finger bones as well. Pass on the Redux.
@NerdOnTheStreet

Haha. I've cut myself on fans a few times before I did this build, and the fans never had shark teeth (they were usually extremely cheap, probably stock, CPU coolers.) Conversely, I doubt the Noctua Redux fans would have enough torque to cut through bone, with or without notches in the plastic. I won't be testing that, though!

Nice video! ZFS / ECC support on AM4 boards and Ryzen processors is sort of controversial... Have you been able to confirm your processor/board/ECC RAM combination is able to detect data errors under ZFS?

How is the sound of the drives when in that kind of mounting position with the adapters?
@NerdOnTheStreet
@NerdOnTheStreet 2 жыл бұрын
I have the system running in my bedroom (for white noise) and the drive sound is not bad at all. The fans are mostly what I hear from the system, more than the drives. I can definitely hear the drives clicking away (in a non-broken fashion) when the NAS is actively being accessed/written to. At least one of the drives does have a very high-pitched ring whenever the system's powered on, which is the most annoying sound coming from the machine-- it's one of those sounds that you can only hear when your head's turned at certain angles relative to the system. I'll try to get some good audio samples for Part 3, since descriptions might not be very useful for that kind of thing.

Easy to forget .4 but easy to remember .5 and using IP adresses within the DHCP Scope?..
@NerdOnTheStreet
@NerdOnTheStreet 2 жыл бұрын
Of course the IP address is within the DHCP scope, I set it up to get configured via DHCP... use whatever IP address you want for your own home network!
@tcntad87

@@NerdOnTheStreet You wanna keep static IP's outside of the DHCP scope to minimize errors, I bet static IP's are better handled by the router's DHCP instead of the WS NIC (easier to manage and lists everything in one place)
@NerdOnTheStreet
@NerdOnTheStreet 2 жыл бұрын
@@tcntad87 Yeah, that's what I did. I assigned it through the router's DHCP starting at 31:13. Did you even watch the video?

A very loooong video, sorry I had to fast forward for watching. Please try to make the video shorter. Other than that no complaints, very informative waiting for part 3. Btw, does the NAS box needs to be beefy, ryzen 3, 32 gigs ram, Or you have any specific purposes for them?
@NerdOnTheStreet
@NerdOnTheStreet 2 жыл бұрын
I do not care about your "complaints." This part was shorter than the first-- you're welcome. I would recommend watching this kind of video in multiple sittings, but if you don't have the attention span or the time for that, your loss. You will not offend me by watching at a higher speed or skipping sections altogether. I covered the hardware selection in-depth in Part 1. ZFS performs better with lots of RAM, and CPU is good for ZFS compression as well as virtualization.

I appreciate the longer, well explained and step-by-step video. I'm not the most tech savvy out there, so I end up getting plenty out of the information he provides. Many thanks.

Newegg is awful. I'd rather buy from randoms on ebay.
