Why Hugh Jackman Gave Drive To Ryan Gosling

Hugh Jackman, most known for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, was once cast as the lead of the movie Drive. Though during a tough pre-production process, the film changed directors and Hugh Jackman decided that he and auteur director Nicolas Winding Refn weren't the right fit. The film would later go on to cast Ryan Gosling in the iconic role, but how different would Drive have been with Hugh Jackman behind the wheel?

The same thing happened to the first Matrix movie. Had Will Smith not turned down the role of Neo (for Wild Wild West...) the vibe of the entire movie would have been different and not for the better. Even Smith admitted that Keanu was 1000 times better than he himself would have been with his high energy acting.

I know a criticism of the movie is often that characters are often very quiet and don't talk much. I love this about Drive. Film is a visual art form and you can show so much emotion in someone's face. Tell a great story through a simple reaction. Just as in life, sometimes words are not needed. And I felt so connected to the movie because of that. But that's not something most viewers feel connected to. It's more challenging. And that ok. It's not for everyone, lots of viewers want to escape, not feel empathy. That's totally fine. But I'm so glad that some films feed that need other viewers have. To feel connected to what they watch.

ryan was perfect in drive. i can't imagine anyone else. i don't see hugh having that same stoic demeanor. ryan goes from empathetic to psychopath in an instant, all while keeping this boyish stoic assertive yet calm demeanor. it's a great display of physical acting. hugh would be better suited for a more traditional action character that didn't fit in this movie. drive was incredible. no bullshit, no pretentious writing or acting.. just grounded superb story telling. ryan was perfect for it, just like he was for bladderunner for the same reasons

Gosling's acting is subtle and he usually keeps the emotions inside. This helped "Drive" to present the main character in the best way possible. tho I believe Hugh is the better actor in general, Ryan was the better choice for this role.

Drive made me expect more from Gosling but instead we got him as a dancer and now a Ken doll. For shits n giggles would love a bizarre action fantasy horror or crime movie with him and RYAN REYNOLDS as brothers like Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have done 1-2 films TV short series together as buddies never relatives but they look act alike is fun.

True. But there’s a reason Hollywood gave Keanu Reeves a gun instead of a monologue. People give him a pass just because he’s a good person in real life. Doesn’t excuse bad acting outside of Matrix and Wick.

Not quite correct I'm afraid? The usage you're citing features "myriad" as an adjective, whereas the (also correct) usage in the film features "myriad" as a noun. It's one of those words (unlike plethora) which can be used as either part of speech.

No doubt it would be entertaining, with cool action scenes but also the kind of film I'd forget as soon as I walked out of the theatre.

@@chrishill9197 I guess I have to explain both to you. 1. the film sucked because it had a trailer that depicted the film to be a like neon noir action movie with a compelling story, but as we all know it was a 180. In all aspects i.e. the dialogue, the action, the characters, the sound, the cinematography, and everything else that makes a film "a film" was just plain average if not boring. 2. Let me see if I can elaborate on the "fever dream" part; in an argument, these people are unable to have a good comeback at that moment but think of one a few days later. The movie is meant for those who are slow in the head; slow in the sense of gullible and inexperienced in life in the year of its release. It was 2011, there were so many other movies that kept me entertained than this fuck all movie. Drive is in the same league as Sucker Punch. By the way, you validated my comment.
