Happy Star Wars day everyone! I wish the shows and movies that we are getting would be better, but here we are with little else to look forward to than The Acolyte. With its release set for just one month from now, I thought that I would use Star Wars day to talk about the many ways in which Star Wars has slowly died over the years.
Let's dive in.

It's OK to dislike the prequels... but you got to admit that it was aligned with the original. In the sense that it makes sense. It does explain how Luke s father became darth vador and how the republic falls. The rest, of course , we can debat how bad choices were made... jarjar binks, actors choices, bad acting, lightsaber fights, too much cgi's etc etc.. but at least the story makes sens
@Livvvid

@philippebiendon5809 I agree, it at least attempts to explain stuff. I think it could have been explained in different ways. And to say something good about the prequels, John Williams kills it again and George was great at visualization. Despite me not liking the prequels I could still name every planet they went to and describe what was on it. Disney tho??? I genuinely can't say anything good. Even TFA can't get praise without having to then really say that praise is deserved for ANH and Empire strikes back. I can't give flowers to TFA when all it did was copy nearly every detail of a previous trilogy and the few times it strays into new material is laughably bad.

What if the studios said “we are going to make a Barbie trilogy…but make it for men and completely ignore women” Would anyone be remotely surprised when it inevitably fails? Women who liked Star Wars were ALREADY onboard. Ignoring the 80-85% male audience obliterated the franchise. Throw in absolutely incompetent creatives and writers and you get a complete disaster. Only Favaro was able to be successful and created three new characters (Mando, Grogu, Cara) who were accepted and liked by the audience. And because of that, those characters are now accepted with the original characters as part of the fandom. I bet deep down inside that just p*sses the hell out of KK 🤣🤣

Disney Star wars taught me the value of head cannon. As far as I am concerned, Star wars ends at return of the Jedi, with Luke going on to be an awesome master and found a new Jedi order, Han and Leia having a happy/if tempestuous marriage as they rebuild the republic and battle against remnants of the empire, and Palpatine never somehow returning! Oddly enough, with how inconsequential even the force awakens feels, it's surprisingly easy just to forget about and treat as none-official fan fiction (or rather hater fiction). if I ever want more Starwars stories, maybe I'll just go read some old EU pre-Disney novels instead! (I do remember quite enjoying the thrawn trilogy).

It's one thing to kill off characters from the original trilogy in a respectful and meaningful way. They literally brought the Legacy characters back just to kill them off to make way for their one(or two)-dimensional copycats. They're not just saying they hate what was already there, they straight-up m*rdered the three main characters of the original trilogy right before our eyes. And Palpatine coming back as a clone is basically plageurism, it was done years before in the Expanded Universe. So they de-canonized a story that already existed, stole what they liked of that story, slathered it together with nostalgia-bait and diversity-bait, and put new faces into old roles, by way of copy and paste. Then had the gall to call it art. An abomination on every level.

Wow. What an excellent analysis! Very well written and thought out. I just recently walked out of the most recent of franchise films, being planet of the Apes, and my son and I had a whole discussion about how movies are just...meh... now. We were wondering what happened to society that we've come to a point where movies just don't inspire us anymore. We quickly turned our discussion to Star Wars. My son is an aspiring screenwriter and for the past few years I've been feeding him the works of Joseph Campbell and other writers who have at their core "the hero's journey". Such authors remind us that mythological archetypes aren't something that we should look at as old, dated, or not modern concepts... instead they are transcendent concepts about what it is to be human. They are even more so relevant today. They define for us what it means to suffer, to grow, to overcome, and ultimately to triumph. As you say so well, storytelling isn't only about inclusion or diversity... yes these concepts are important... but it should be about STORY... about what it is that makes us human. So my son and I concluded our discussion by agreeing that movies today are.. meh... because society today is... meh. Today's writers are just a reflection of that. At any rate.... fantastic analysis... keep up the good work!

This full quote by Charles Caleb Colton emphasizes that while imitation is a form of admiration, it is also a method through which the ordinary or less original can align itself with the truly exceptional.

The problem in general is that they don't focus on personality nor growth, if the character is all powerful and flawless it's not interesting. I mean they should see frieren to see a character that even though is more powerful than the rest, she's still likeable and relatable due to her accepting that she needs to learn to care more about other people, which Rey doesn't have nor any of these new crop of op and flawless characters.

Lucas selling Star Wars meant that we were going to get tons of Star Wars projects. Which instantly meant there would be some that I hate and some that I love. I knew this then and it’s held true ever since. These haters are just real slow in picking up on this.

Another great video. I just wish some of these franchises were happy witht the fans they have and respect them. Instead, they are always looking to try and bring others in to the fan base even if it means losing the ones who already support it. Some will stay when you change it but not all and more leave than are brought in. They need to give their crowd what they want rather than wishing they had a different audience and catering for those who are not interested

I saw the original Star Wars when I was 8 years old. I was a happy (and loyal) fan for most of my life...until the moment Lucas sold the franchise to Disney. Now Star Wars no longer holds any wonder, excitement or entertainment value, and the brand (IMHO) is damaged beyond repair. Kennedy has spent her tenure at Lucasfilm besmirching the legacy of George Lucas by trying to recreate it with her vision. Unfortunately. In the modern Kennedy era Star Wars, there is no focus on entertainment or even creating a well written original story. My advice for anyone that wants to have a true Star Wars experience, stick to playing KOTOR (parts 1 & 2 for console). And the newer mmorpg KOTOR (which has a free to play option). Also, their trailers are so much better than anything Kennedy and her minions can come up with.

It is hard to have an opinion about contemporary Star Wars stories, as I have not bothered to watch them out of a fear of being terribly disappointed, and there is also a financial aspect; I wouldn't want to waste my money, or time. Ironically, I only just watched the prequel trilogy for the first time a few weeks ago, and as I expected to be, I was a little disappointed in what I saw, and no where near the experience I felt nearly ½ a century ago (hard to believe it was so long ago) when I watched the first Star Wars at the cinema as a young teen. Knowing that it all seems to go downhill from those does not incentivise me to watch any more…

The worst part about the slow death of Star Wars is, there is nothing we can do to fix it as long as Disney continues to own it. The executives don't care about its decline in quality if they continue to earn money, legal or not. The audiences don't care about its decline in quality as long as they're entertained. The only way out as a Star Wars fan is to let go and move on. The fact that videos of Star Wars criticism is still gaining traction is still giving a message to Disney that Star Wars is thriving. Bad press is still good press.

it's been such a slow and painful death, We're at the point where we just want it to pass on and be at peace like a sick pet. I never would have imagined star wars would get to this point. Even during the prequels it wasn't like this. There were still things to like about them and it wasn't politically motivated by real world social justice crap.

I think we need to be careful about the quote from the acolyte that says there is no good or bad there is only power. We don't exactly know who that character is yet and she made herself be evil, or some kind of pacifist. If we assume that quote is actually speaking for the entire show then we could be making a mistake.

Everybody told me about how great Star Wars was, and the first one I saw was Episode 1 in theaters. I wasn’t impressed and didn’t see 2-3. Then I waited until Episode 7…and I was disappointed again. Because of this, I STILL have not watched the original trilogy. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but the ONLY thing from Star Wars that I thoroughly enjoyed was Season 1 of Mandolorian.

i actually like when the hero is morally ambiguous. doesn't mean you can't be a hero if you are a little evil. since evil rarely considers itself evil. theres so many ways to tell a meaningful story and disney is just lazy and pandering. when you attempt to appeal to everyone you appeal to few. they could turn this around anytime but they wont. you would think losing all this money would influence them. i miss lucas arts. i hope we never get a knights of the old republic movie.

I think you articulated the point beautifully. So much effort has been put into expressing polarizing social viewpoints with these new movies that it has sacrificed any hope the audience might have had to experience a good story about Star Wars. Have you seen the new Shogun series on Hulu/FX? Very curious to hear your thoughts on the writing/storytelling behind that show.

Here’s how I have been explaining it…. Why Disney Star Wars is at odds with its fans and the journey that led to losing fan interest… 1. Disney declared the EU (Extended Universe) non-canon. This included stories, novels, games and comics that had developed over decades. Many of which had storylines that expanded on the Star Wars world, characters, lore and had more added depth and potential content than any IP that has ever existed. 2. They did not have enough foresight for arguably the largest globally known media IP to at least think through a full story arc for the sequel trilogy and it produced a lot of weird plot holes, disjointed characters, and fan divisions. George Lucas had already done this for them, but they dismissed it completely and basically just decided to “wing it” instead. 3. Disney clamped down on the IP. They stopped or heavily deterred people developing fan films that had gone on for decades. Some of how this was handled was not done very well and drove some wedges between Disney and an incredibly passionate fan base. In fact, I would say that not effectively connecting with and harnessing this huge and passionate fan base was just an overall giant mistake. 4. The sequel trilogy did not effectively have the more known recognizable legacy characters “pass the baton” or treat them with respect, which created more fan disappointment than it did to build interest. 5. Their progressive social messaging seemed more important than telling a good story and it came across blatantly strong to the point of distracting - force is female, disparaging fans on social media (many times which were REALLY bad, and shockingly inappropriate), “The Message” emphasis of High Republic content, Admiral Holdo’s… existence, Luke’s characterization, Rey’s miraculous development, Finn’s wasted backstory, emphasis of diversity/activism over competence, cycling through project directors like tic-tacs. 6. They did not effectively develop or flush out the new trilogy characters which missed a huge opportunity to create viewer connection or open up storylines - people just did not care as much anymore and fandom both shrank and became more divided. 7. Things reset a bit with a teamed Lucas/Filoni/Favreau effort. Historical character development was progressed and new characters with depth were created and evolved through animated series and live action shows recreating fan connections and interest. Things seemed to finally be getting back on track with the Mandalorian. The end of season 2 showing Luke at the height of his Jedi development was something every OG fan had been hoping to see for 40 years. Fandom was at an all time high since Disney bought Lucasfilm. 8. Complications and power struggles then reportedly ensued between the Favreau/Filoni and Kennedy camps internally and divisions apparently caused multiple delays, and impacted planned storylines and character arcs: Luke’s Re-appearance, Cara Dune’s disappearance (Gina Carano’s firing probably deserves its own entire bullet point), canceling the Rangers of the New Republic series, Grogu’s marketability over his planned story arc, noticeably strange character utilizations in the Obi-Wan series, the obvious lackluster effort with the Boba Fett series, And… the future planned Rey movie is slated to have a self proclaimed “female activist” with no Star Wars knowledge or fictional film experience to lead this effort 🤦‍♂️ (Seriously, that and documentaries are her qualifications?!?). 9. As more characters started getting introduced, some of their introductions and development became more rushed (especially if all content and animations had not been seen) or subverted. Story-writing seemed to take a dip In quality, and many fans had challenges in following or staying engaged. In addition, female representation started moving from balanced to overwhelmingly dominant, and concepts like gender identity that have been divisive and controversial in the real world have canonically been moved into the Star Wars fantasy world. 10. Today, we are anticipating the start of the first series set in a new era developed by the Kennedy team. So far, there has been extensive volunteered emphasis and media coverage about the progressive ideologies of the directors and actors that are currently drawing lots of social/cultural drama more so than anything about the actual Star Wars story. This all occurring in the social environment of the overdone and declining “girl boss” media plots and “Culture Wars” that have produced a slew of recent underperforming projects and fan apathy. Meanwhile, the broader Disney company is dealing with consumer backlash about these same points of emphasis - over storytelling - that have had significant financial repercussions on their other IPs and fan interests. It’s been like watching the captain purposely steer this Titanic IP towards the iceberg! If Star Wars could get out of their own way, the potential is massive! I just can’t stand watching Star Wars shoot themselves in their own foot and wonder why things aren’t going well - then denigrate the fans saying they are at fault, then not take any accountability. Meanwhile, more and more fans are just checking out or choosing other entertainment.

I feel we have returned to the status quo of after Episode 3 or after Clone Wars. In the sense that there are no longer any more official projects, but rather fan fictions. Personally, Ive been enjoying the fan fiction videos from Pente Patrol and The Star Wars Galaxy. These stories are far more thought provoking and done with more passion than anything disney has done by themselves.
