Knives is the most lovable ex ever in any film. Pretty in Pink gave us Ducky, who was friendzoned at the prom. The movie then revealed the highly probable situation in which a gorgeous blond saw Ducky and invited him over, so the audience is supposed to feel good for him. Lame. The Knives character encourages Scott to follow his dream, and announces with confidence that she's ok. So that character got to show us infatuation, jealousy, resignation, and finally selfless agape. This movie rules. All the actors nailed their parts.

The scene at 4:17 was very cleverly done! The part of the house that you see Scott is walking through is simply a set, the walls of which are on wheels (include the staircase). The second Scott closes the door and beings to pee, backstage workers move the walls away and wheel in new ones that make up the school setting. Then, when he opens the door again, the set is completely different. There is footage of them doing this on the Behind the Scenes Documentary on the Scott Pilgrim vs the World DVD.

Have you read the comics? I read them before watching the movie, and as a huge Scott Pilgrim fan, and an aspiring film maker, I found the movie absolutely atrocious. The only good parts where ones that came from the comics themselves. Do yourself a favor and read them, they contain just as much (more) fun as the movie, and they have the breathing room and the much more suitable art style to do it justice.

I'd say it's less that it's an atrocious film, and more that it's just a bad adaptation. And even that isn't ENTIRELY true (seeing as how it depends on if you believe an adaptation should be loyal or stand on its own, etc.). The comic is great, and while the movie isn't as good, it isn't nearly bad enough to say it's "atrocious".

I feel like a lot of Scott Pilgrim's transitions are rooted in trying to be faithful to the comic book. I know that it takes a lot of talent to bring something like Scott Pilgrim to film. However, I feel like not comparing and contrasting the comic and film transitions is an oversight to the topic. Also, with as much as Edgar Wright is talked up in this video, I wanted to see a some other examples of his work.

Another thing about Scott Pilgrim is that many people who love it point to it as an example of how comic book movies should be because the quick transitions and the distortion of space within the story is very much like that within a comic book. Scott Pilgrim was a movie which knew that it was based on a comic book and played with that idea. Now, I don't know if that sort of approach would work for the more serious movies based on comic books like Batman, but it does perhaps point to a way to help some movies which haven't been too successful. Perhaps one of the many problems that can hinder a comic book-based movie is that they are so often trying to fit the story and the style of the book itself into the arrangement and rigidity of a "typical" movie. I know some may take issue with this and I'm full willing to admit that I may be wrong, but it does seem like at least some of the Marvel movies have taken that advice and arranged the movie more like a comic book rather than trying to squeeze and press the comic book into the frame of a traditional movie.

The most impactful line and biggest insight of this whole video happens at 4:59 "Scott Pilgrim is a story about a transitionary period in the Hero's life. A period between knowing who you were and deciding who you are going to be" THIS IS SUCH A GOOD LINE. I find that this period is so difficult in people's lives when they have no direction on who they want to be. It's so hard for my friend's that jump out of college with nothing, not do anything and ultimately push themselves to suffer with the rest of the outcasts of society. Trying to push through this and not staying still when it happens is extremely important. In my own life, I have doubted if I was going down the right path multiple times, often ending up in depression. But making sure that I know that have something that I can do and push myself to be better at has helped me through those times. I guess that's one way of taking that, but I think people need to stop losing confidence in themselves when they have one little thing happen to them. It disheartens the people around them. If you know someone in that kind of rut, please be a good friend for them. Let them cry on your shoulder if you have to. It's not something that is going to destroy your masculinity, or hurt your social standing. If anything it creates a stronger bond with that person and hopefully you'll be able to rely on them in that sort of situation.

This is so perfect. Look: the BRRRRR even runs along the denser areas of the tree branches! I just wish the movie was more like the comic: I understand the length limits, but the whole point of it was lost by the end. I mean, just look at the Shadow Scott differences as an example. This video reminded me of a scene in Game of Thrones 2x03 where someone has a conversation with three different people, yet it's so cleverly edited and the transitions are so well-utilized that instead of being three different scenes for three different conversations, it's just one seamless, masterclass of a scene.

Rob Thomas's "iZombie" likes to do the same thing during sequences where the police are interrogating several people. They'll cut the interviews up into bits and then arrange them so it seems like the various witnesses\suspects are having an argument or discussion with each other, while the detectives have minimal input. It's an interesting way of handling such stock (but necessary) scenes.

io 90 I understand where you're coming from, but I think Swiss Army Man was beautifully paced and incredible. If you consider it to be in the same world as Interesting Ball, it really makes it seem more complete to me. Hank builds this life with Many, and in the end when it's revealed that maybe he isn't crazy, I think to Interesting Ball. It makes for a bigger reveal when you realize "these things that seem impossible aren't just probable, but inevitable."

Saying that the reason there are so many transitions in the film is because the film is about "a transition in Scott Pilgrim's life"... is sweet, and it sounds great to wrap up your video... but I'm positive that's not the case AT ALL. Wright most probably wanted to galvanize the adaptation adding some cinematic quality to the source material (the comic book itself). And... that's it.

These things remind me of the Death Note manga.. when the creators were asked about a lot of the symbolism in it, they simply brushed off all of the community's deep discussion on their implications by simply saying stuff like "I just thought it was really cool". Genius not always comes from the mind, but by the mere chance that a person creates when allowed to present his product to an audience that has all the resources to appreciate it in levels it didn't have on its own.

While I'd say that is extremely true for most of the film, I do actually think the part where he says the transitions make you feel what Scott is feeling, that is, "drifting through life", might still be very intentional. For instance, in the beginning the transitions in particular felt so seamless and often, it's actually a little hard to keep up at points. Like the audience is being teleported from one place to another. Especially that part where Scott is hanging out with Knives or when he went from playing the guitar, to walking down the street. In both scenes, he was very out of it and hardly interacting with anyone. As a result, in both scenes each transition seem to always be within seconds of each other. I think that at the very least was intentional since it gives us a sense of not knowing exactly what's going on, as if we weren't paying enough attention like Scott was. Especially since the only continuous thing in both of these scenes, was how Scott interacted with the world. Making it feel like we are watching the world move around him, rather than the world movie WITH him.

If you watch the behind the scenes making of blu ray, they achived the transition in studio by doing a tracking shot and when scott closes the door, they in real time brought in the floor, lockers, etc and then cleaned it up in post.

I personally love the blurring of the distinction between the 'fakeness' of a movie and reality. I love phantasmagoria and the Kingdom Hearts openings are some of my all time favourite videos. I also love the idea of making a movie with as few 'virtual' elements as possible, even the intro/credits being physically present in the scene (not exactly relevant to Scott Pilgrim but also good). I liked how in the Fringe tv series the names of locations are in the form of 3D text floating in midair in the scene at a specific place in space and it remaining ever present throughout the series, that bit is just awesome to me and I'd like more of that in cinematography (to do it myself actually, but that'll likely never happen).

Why didn't you mention the fact that transitions are also so important because its a comic book, that's such an important element to how the film would be made - based on the comic's panels and doing what they're able to do that way. The scene transition of the bathroom it's very interesting, there is a behind the scenes that shows how they made it, they just changed the set in real time, they moved the floor and the lockers, the walls had wheels so they can move it fast... Awesome video btw!!!

One thing which struck me with Antman is Wright's dialogue and monologue was there but the cinematography wasn't. Luis friend of a friend stories never had the right cuts in them.

Funny, that's what was done in Catch 22 by Heller; the transitions were seamless, places swapped in the middle of conversation and the only constant was a line of dialogue or a name etc.
