Even Critters are surprised by this episode. They deviated from the campaign in order to hit important story beats and character moments better. I can see much foreshadowing but presented now very differently. And the payout would be so good because it's now streamlined brilliantly. Loving it!

Just the show in general, Season 1 was much more close to the actual game but also had some things mixed up to keep it fresh, Season 2 is deviating much more from how the actual campaign went while still being able to adapt important character and story moments.

Episode 6 is one of the biggest divergences from the original campaign yet. But as a critter, I love it! As long as they hit the important/iconic story beats, what happens in between is free real estate. Adapting hundreds of hours into twelve 24 min episodes is no cakewalk, so liberties will be taken, and that’s what makes it exciting for even the most informed critter.

I agree 💯. It makes me sad when critters, especially ones who helped with the Kickstarter, are we unhappy with the show. Did they think it was going to be a straight adaptation? Anyway, I'm blown away episode by episode. This season is turning out to be a 10/ out of 10. Every year you get a handful of show 5 or 6 that are this f'n fantastic.

Totally agree! I saw an interview where Matt talked about the idea of Dragons wielding Vestiges, which is easily one of the most interesting shifts to come out of the adaption (in my opinion improving on the original because of the increased stakes and interconnections of the original storylines.)

I think a lot of the difference a lot of people are seeing in storytelling between s1 and s2 comes down to the perspective at the time of writing the seasons, with the first season, i think there was a lot of pressure to hit fan favorite moments since this was their "only shot" to see the characters on screen, and the room for modification/deviation just wasnt really there, the reception for season 1 and the fact that they now had established characters to work with I think really favors the second season in that we know what everyones "schtick" is so to speak, so now there is so much more time for nuance and pacing where there just wasnt quite enough breathing room in the first season. Massive props to the team of directors, animators and designers, s2 has been incredible.

You are correct. Emon is the city (with 80-90% dead), then Tal'Dorei the country, and Exandria the world. Funny you mention archer on broom. There is a scene in the campaign where Vex is practicing shooting while flying, and she accidentally nails Scanlan in the neck. 🤣😂 And no, Keyleth didn't step through a portal to Hell (the Nine Hells are a different thing). She stepped through a portal into the elemental Plane of Fire. There's an elemental plane for the major elements, and each of the Ashari tribes bases their village around a rift into the associated plane. Like Keyleth's home has a weak space between the Material Plane and the Plane of Air. Keyleth in Episode 5 learned how to transform into an elemental (which was a great wildshape ability she gained that became very useful).

I mean, the Fire plane does look rather hellish, or what we usually imagine hell like. But the Layers of Hell in DnD are a bit more varied. Like, one layer is literally completely frozen over. The other elemental planes are a bit easier. Water is just a huge, endless ocean. (possibly with a few islands?) Air is a bunch of floating islands and clouds in an endless sky. One of the notable inhabitants (except elementals) are the Genies. Djinni are specifically Air, Efreeti are Fire, Dao for Earth, and Marrid for Water.

Travis (Grog) and Laura (Vex) are married in real life. And they had to take a break during campaign 2 to have their baby. BTW, Matt (DM) and Marisha (Keyleth) are also married. Liam (Vax) and Sam (Scanlan) were doing a podcast together when Liam thought it would be fun to get a game going as Sam had never played DnD before and then they could talk about it on their podcast. So for Liam's birthday, they called up Matt. Also, Ashley was off doing 'Blind Spot' during a lot of campaign 2, so this is all new territory even for those of us who followed along in the campaign. (I believe Pike was off doing some sort of 'missionary work' when they met the second sphinx).

She was with the party during this part of the campaign, but I think during the sphinx episode in particular she was being portrayed by Matt, rather than Ashley, so she didn't show a lot of depth. At other points during the Chroma Conclave arc, she stayed behind in Whitestone to help take care of the refugees

I watched the campaign when it was live. There is so much that they've changed. But it works so well. In the campaign (SPOILERS for the game): The trial was that they had to try and find out his name, while they fought him. There were portals to the elemental planes that each has two letters. Everyone each took a plane. Grog went into the wind plane (which was a problem because he couldn't read). He had a problem getting back because of the wind, so he tied a rope to the sword and threw it out the portal. He rolled badly, and so it ended up stabbing Pike. And Umbrasyl wasn't there at all, so obviously Scanlan kept Mythcarver.

Vex wasn’t upset about the Elf jab. Syngorn is where she and Vax lived with her father. Y’know, the guy who called her a mistake... Also, Grog wasn’t doing nearly as well as you think. Umbrasyl didn’t try to fly or use its breath attack, two things it used regularly on the Sphinx. That should tell you how much of a threat Grog actually was. Remember, to a dragon, he was an ant. A single ant can bite, it can can cause you pain, but it’s an annoyance more than anything else

When Keyleth says "I can certainly try" that was an easter egg to Matt (the Game master and her husband IRL). When players ask if they can do something that might have a bad consequence if they fail, he says, "You can certainly try" as his way of telling them "You can if you want to, just think it through..." lol

Tal'dorei is the continent on which Emon is the largest city(on the west coast) Westruun is in the middle, and Whitestone is far to the east(which is why they were safe from Vorugal in Ep1) Keyleth walked into the Elemental Plane of Fire and turned into a Fire Elemental(which is something only certain Druid Subclasses get to do) And like others have said, they took even us critters by surprise this season by switching up some plot things, timing of things to make the story beats hit better. Glad you two are enjoying this!

The big difference between The Last Of Us and this is that TLOU already existed in a visual medium, it is already consumable as a slightly interactive movie, whereas these characters and events have only ever existed in fanart, character portraits, and the imagination of viewers and the cast of Critical Role. They've also changed the story enough from the original streams that it remains interesting for long-time viewers, as well as being able to rewrite some events to tell a more cohesive story than the loosely bounded improv of a D&D session; this episode, for example, is nothing like the encounter in the campaign, to the benefit of the storytelling imho

As a backer, what you say at the end here (and what many other people have said over the course of the two seasons) has made this well worth it. I wanted this so so badly to be accessible to people who had never watched a live stream or even heard of Critical Role. So this just makes me (and quite a few others I'd imagine) super happy. Don't get me wrong, I still would have loved it if it was only something that we fans would enjoy, but it makes it all the more special that it's reaching a broader audience. I hope this makes sense. I have a dog who does not want me to sleep more than a few hours the past 3 nights so I might just be typing gibberish right now. 😅

17:00 the reason there hasn't been much Pike is because Ashley Johnson was filming in NY alot of C1 so she wasn't there for a good portion of it and didn't get to create plot points. They're trying to put her in and tie to the other plot points but its kinda difficult.

If you want a fun place to jump into C1 of CR, I recommend the "Trials of the Take" episodes, #18 to 21. That shows the introduction of Kash and Zara, which were rewritten for the TV show. Also, interestingly, ep 22 is "Aramente to Pyrah" which has the group's first visit to Pyrah, all of which originally happened way before the Chroma Conclave arc (they do go back later when the fire plane opens.)

I always hold the Trials of the Take to be the perfect intro to D&D. Those four episodes showcase basically all the best parts of D&D and the ideal player/DM group, and yet are still unpolished enough by their professional status to be realistic representations of a typical table.

Having watched Campaign 1 several times, this show is surprising in how it presents stuff. Sometimes they will switch it around and I will know what is going to come of a plot thread but it doesn't make it any less emotional for me. Its a good balance, because it does stay true to the heart of the story and characters in every way that matters. Thanks for your reactions! I am so glad this show is growing on you too. I think the reason we have so much more story this season is because they know they can tell all of that story, unlike season 1 where there were a chance they would only get one season and it felt cruel to start all those story thread without knowing if they'll be able to follow through. And, ya know, experience. The whole team got so much better at everything

There was a training "game" associated with Vex learning how to shoot from the broom. I REALLY hope we get a version of it, but it's looking unlikely. Also, I totally didn't even notice Keyleth's outfit change, Lol. Also also, the journey to the Earth Tribe for the Aramente happened prestream, but confirmed it's yet to happen in the show. Do we get another prestream reveal? Also ALSO also, the the city that Lady Alura mentions (Syngorn) is the city where the Twins' father is an ambassador from, so Vex's look is about more than just the casual anti-elf racism.

Speaking as someone who's watched all the campaigns - the show still manages to surprise you a lot. Part of it is the way they play with the storylines to condense what would otherwise be tons of 4 hour sessions. However, the other part of it is seeing things from perspectives outside of the main characters.

10:24 - nope, it's not Hell. It's the Elemental Fire Plane, as mentioned directly by Allura at 7:55 of this video. In Matt's world, the Ashari are tasking with guarding the Material Plane's portals to these places of raw Elemental power (Water, Earth, Fire, Air). So the Fire Ashari are tasked with guarding the portal to the Elemental Fire Plane in that volcano. Understandable you'd think it was Hell because of all the fire... But if it were Hell (i.e. the Nine Hells), there would be Devils pouring out of that portal, not just creatures of elemental fire.

These 2 episodes have my 2 favorite moments of the entire show so far. Keyleth's mastery of fire scene is so fucking good and I tear up every time, the music is just so good. And then actually the other one is Scanlan singing the love song to the Sphinx, the music is so good. I love how they have made all of Scanlan's moments in the show so far have been made to seem funny, but a lot of them actually have an emotional undertone on how Scanlan is feeling and giving us insight into him, and this is the peak of those moments. I have watched both of those moments multiples times by themselves.

Spoilers This episode had a lot for Critters. The sphynix's challenge was different. Umbrasyl didn't attack, and Kalmajori didn't die. That really hit so hard after Scanlan's song. Pike did get stabbed by Grog with Craven Edge, but it was a different circumstance. This was more horrific.

Also, the woman at the end scene who approached the black dragon was Dr Ripley, who was in Season 1, Episode 10. She was the one-handed woman Vox Machina encountered under Whitestone Castle, having previously collaborated with the Briarwoods. I am very curious as to how they'll get to the end of this season. Ep 6 is a big deviation from the campaign, but I think they're doing it to follow a rule of three with umbrasyl. I've been very pleased with the adaptation of the story. I think they'll have a harder time with the mighty Nein. Those characters were so damn hard to like for a while, and the story for c2 is going to be so much harder to adapt into a tv show.

Spoilers for C2 Yeah It's going to be very interesting, They've definitely shaved off a lot of the rough edges of VM, Like Scanlan's sharpness and excessive lecherousness, and Keyleth's painful awkwardness, and Vax's near suicidal tendencies, etc. So I am wondering how much they're going to "Un-Douche-ify" M9 without completely ruining the story. Beau is definitely going to be the hardest character to adapt. I Mean Beau is just a straight up 0 charm, unmitigated asshole for like a solid third of the campaign, on purpose. Not much you can do about that, her whole arc is learning how to be slightly less of a douche lol. (I'm not a Marisha hater, Beau is an asshole lol, Marisha's great). Jester will be fine, people like cute things, Though I will be interested to see how they translate Laura's often borderline sociopathic jokes that she plays as Jester that are somehow fine because Laura Bailey is a genius and could sell someone who's drowning water. People, the M9 VERY MUCH included, misjudged her and The traveler's relationship and the M9 got increasingly annoying about it even after they figured out he wasn't a threat to her, so that'll be interesting to see how they handle that. Trash wizard and Goblin thief will be fine, Let's face it, people love sad mentally ill emotionally unstable yet very powerful characters, especially ones with a mysterious past and a friendship with a weird creature who also is mentally unstable and has a mysterious past lol. Molly will be absolutely fine, They're (shockingly) The moral compass? (The accent will be the hardest part, sorry Taliesin). Fjord might be hard because his moral compass is all over the place lol. Yasha will be hard just because it's Pike all over again for the first bit of the campaign so they'll have to write some extra scenes for her to explain why she's just bailing all the time, because that could come off as kind of dickish if they don't do it right. Caduceus is too good for this world and will be amazing but probably not until season 2/ maybe even season 3 probably 2 though. I think they'll really have to explore the differences between VM and M9, Legendary heroes on a noble quest vs selfish chucklefucks who banded together purely for convenience dicking around who stumble onto things and occasionally help because they are ok people or because it's in their best interest/ the interest of a group member. It's like that Guardians of the galaxy line "Why would you want to save the galaxy?" "'Cause I'm one of the idiots that lives in it!" They're going to really have to lean into that vibe.

I kind of get why people worry about this, but i think it's subjective. Like myself for example, i liked and was intrigued by all of the MN members but never completely like the whole group of VM. At least didn't get attached to all the characters like with MN. Also loved the NPCs and story more. From my perspective, they already proved they adapt the story pretty well to fit the animated series, no doubt they will succeed with MN too.

I mean I love both groups, but M9 makes me want to punch them in the face more often lol. It's interesting you brought up NPC's though, That was always part of my problem with C2 the NPC's were so cool but M9 were so self absorbed that they never got to know any of the NPC's as well as we did in C1.

The "Legendary heroes on a noble quest" it's nice and all, i don't mind it, but it also gets old at some point. I also do not think a good character is defined by being a nice person or morally good. Their characters also evolve and mature by the end anyway.

True, and I was boiling it down to simple tropes, VM are complicated dicks too, it's just that they're complicated dicks on a legendary quest. And I can see how that can get old, but Assholes being assholes, just dicking around got old after awhile too. #ChaosCrew was fun at first but after a while Sam and Laura got a bit overpowering compared to the rest of the characters. It felt at certain points like they were in a sketch comedy group rather than playing their characters. (I was meanly glad there were finally some consequences in the form of episode 129 in the fire plane.) I don't mind funny btw, I just want it to be in character funny you know?

In episode 5, when Kima and Allura were talking about Elves, Vex's reaction was not one of offense. As a half-elf, her full elven father (the dickbag) lived in Syngorn. So hearing that news basically informed her that her father and his people bugged out as soon as the fighting happened. That was why she reacted that way. It was news of her dad and she very much has a lot of conflicting emotions toward him.

Format: why not release single episode reactions spaced throughout the week? Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday? That helps pace engagement and also gives you more room to edit without stress? Iono, that's my gut, but I guess you know the reality of viewer numbers better than me.

If you're watching campaign one, Vox Machina visits Pyrah in episode 22, and they see Thordak in the Elemental Plane of Fire. He doesn't break out until later, though. The Legends of Vox Machina rearranged story beats for pacing, which is why Keyleth's first visit to Pyrah now comes after Thordak broke free.

Dragons are Intelligent... if they don't have to stand their ground, they leave if it gets to dicey for them. Umbrasyl just murdered a Sphinx, while being pounded by Vox Machina and getting cut up by a Super Powered Grog... and he still stayed around to keep fighting... It looked impressive what Grog did... but Umbrasyl didn't think that he is in Trouble.

The problem with Ashley Johnson isn't that she's busier than the others (in fact Laura Bailey does way more voice work than Ashley does). But at the time they were streaming Campaign 1 and half of Campaign 2 Ashley was shooting Blindspot in New York , which meant more than half the time she wasn't in LA on Thursday nights.

Vox Machina and Arcane both did/have been doing this 3 episodes per week release and I've liked it. It gives enough material to just engage with each week, but keeps the conversation going around the series for so much longer. It's a good balance between weekly and binging.

It's funny that you say the people who have watched the campaign know what to expect, because this is where our knowledge of the source material and the story they are crafting for the animated series diverge wildly. I Legit thought the episode was coming to an end after Scanlan got Mythcarver because in the campaign *there was no dragon attack*. The Sphinx never died. The Vestige wasn't stolen. All of that is brand new. I could not be more hype.

In my opinion, what makes this show much more enjoyable than shows like The Last of Us is the emotional rollercoaster it takes us on. No matter how emotionally devastating the story gets at times, it always pulls back out and makes us laugh, both at and with the characters. Just imagine how bleak and depressing it could have been in a totally serious telling of the story.
