He was planning on pulling out Divine Dog Totality. He hadn't pulled that out yet, and that thing can damage special grades like Hanami. That's also what he would have brought out during his brief fight with Sukuna, since he would have just gotten access to it. Both cases he was using cursed energy, which Sukuna and Todo used to gauge the threat of what he was about to summon. The ritual doesn't use cursed energy, which is why he used it here when he had virtually nothing left.
