Hi everyone! Cris here (from the RE4HD project). I really appreciate this video because of the effort you put into capturing the history of the project accurately. The only thing I would say to anyone following the project is that the lion's share of the credit should go to Albert. @DoomRater2 жыл бұрын
What these modders did, they did BECAUSE they have no experience in video games. Capcom artists weren't going to get paid to make all of those assets the correct way, and they weren't super important details, so of course they were skipped during development. In retrospect, this is what rushing your game and not taking the time to make it look proper does, but in the short term it makes perfect sense why all the non-poly assets were made, and it's not as much about stable frame rate as we'd all like to believe.

Capcom has always been pretty good about fan-made content. Mega Man X Street Fighter was a fan game they hosted on their website themselves because they were so impressed by it, and they've outright promoted the Mega Man fan movie. The fan-made Street Fighter Legacy short film impressed them enough that they effectively allowed Street Fighter Assassin's Fist to be an official web series, and even cited it as an inspiration for the story mode in Street Fighter V. I can't say they're perfect as they did take down subtitled Ace Attorney Investigations 2 videos from KZbin (though those videos came back just days later so perhaps it was in error or they backtracked to avoid backlash) but Capcom's stance towards fan-made content is usually more positive than not.

I'm sure that has its appeal for some people, but I like new ideas. I don't want to play the same shit over and over forever. I also disagree entirely about RE2R not being in the same spirit. One thing to point out about the 3DS remakes of OoT and MM that I think everyone overlooks is that they were on the 3DS, which is a console you can take outside. They over-brightened some darker areas so systems like the 2DS and original 3DS (which are darker than something like an IPS 3DS XL) would allow people playing in bright sunlight to still see and enjoy the game. I get it's a sore spot because of accuracy and preservation, but if you have ever tried to play a really dark game on a handheld system outside in the sunlight, you'll start to see why this change was made.

I've been using this mod since 2019 or, much before the 1.0 release, and it was already a much better to play RE4 than the unmodded Steam version. I downloaded ansd installed the 1.0 version as soon as I saw the official announcement, and I've been playing it for a week or so. The work they put on the mod is goes way beyond the standards for fan projects and official remasters, with the new textures and lighting really making the game feel as it did when I played it for the first time, back when it was released: they did a huge update, while keeping the original art style and feel intact. The graphical update alone would've been enough to make this mode mandatory, but the additional updates were also very good: they fixed mouse turning, so RE4 on pc is finally playable with keyboard and mouse without it feeling weird; they fixed the QTE problem in 60 FPS; the option to adjust the FOV is something I never knew I wanted until I tested it on the mod. Really great work, Cris & Albert deserve all the praise and more, and Capcom should give them a job.

They spent a lot more time and with passion while a company is only assigned a task in a limited time, also the AI up-scaling technology was not there yet when they did it. Its like comparing artisan work VS industrial production.

That's exactly it. Companies answer to investors. And investors want deadlines and results, fast. These two had no deadlines or investors to answer to. Just pure heart and soul poured in.

It's so refreshing to see a developer appreciating the work of modders instead of sending them a cease and desist. I'm gonna be honest, I probably wouldn't even bother to complete the game if I was stuck with the vanilla port to PC. Just having a simple FOV slider already drastically improves the experience. Can't wait to see all of the other improvements they've made over 7+ years.

Nerds in their basements> Muti-million companies Every single time. I'm glad Capcom recognized these efforts. Maybe in the future we will get the kind of collaboration that Sega had with fans to make Sonic Mania a reality.

"Every single time." Lmao no. There are infinitely more shithouse mods, conversions, ill-conceived projects and takes by fans. Cris and Albert are true standout paragons.

The RE3 Nemesis dolphin HD made me appreciate it, I was very young when I played RE1, 2 and 3 on my older brothers friends PS1 so I never really had nostalgia for it like I have for RE4, these mod projects go a long way not only in enhancing the original but making younger gamers appreciate older titles!

What I love is they took the harder route and manually referenced and updated every texture instead of just slapping a new filter on there and calling it hd.

A lot of good remasters to look forward to soon honestly- this coupled with P06 (the Sonic 06 remaster literally from the ground up), as well as Operation: Black Mesa (Opposing Force and Blue Shift remakes by Tripmine Studios)

I have never played this game before and I would like to give it a go with this new hd mod installed. However, I am unsure which controls will work best with the steam version. Is it playable with gyro controls? And if gyro doesn‘t work well, does the game feel better with the traditional controller scheme or with mouse and keyboard? Great video as always by the way!
@o-donnell2 жыл бұрын
I've never tried it with mouse and keyboard, but playing with a standard gamepad like a 360 controller works really well.
@Nerrel2 жыл бұрын
I was using gyro the whole time, works great. You have to either mode shift or use action layers to switch to kb+mouse controls when aiming. Thanks for watching
@TheSgtBeefheart2 жыл бұрын
The hd pack comes with a few qol improvements to mouse aiming, which never felt right in the original. While I still think the wii version is the best one, I would not play re4 on pc with a controller over kb+m
@MrMagic1592 жыл бұрын
The game was designed around a traditional control scheme and that's what I've always played with, and it still feels great imo.
@unintelgen25102 жыл бұрын
I have a Steam config that might work for you; it's not perfect and designed for Nintendo controllers but it gets the job done. RE4, and all Capcom games, don't like mixed inputs (kb/m and controller at the same time) so ultimately I bind games like those to kb/m for better mouse aiming. I bind the A key to the A button and then map the keys ingame. ABXY becomes ABXY key presses (and for movement I use IUOP keys, P being down and I being up) The config's easily findable from Steam's controller configuration tool under the community tab; it's labeled "Resident Gyro 4 V2". It also has instructions for recommended ingame settings and every action is labeled. (some actions are still not labeled ingame correctly because I still use LMB/RMB for zR/RB so the QTEs show up as such.) tl;dr grab the config from Steam, set it up as labeled and edit the re_tweaks keys as well

I've never played a game and stopped to look at textures and material maps as much as I did when playing this mod. If someone were to ask me the meaning of love I'd point them to this mod, the effort, sheer force of will to go hunt all those original places and assets and attention to detail put the whole industry to shame despite not having any damn professional experience what so ever, it's the kind of spirit that used to exist back in the NES era when devs were just nerds like us that loved videogames and not business suits that wanted more microtransactions in their fully priced multiplayer only releases. I salute you glorious bastards for creating this beautiful remaster that will make an ageless game even more immortal.

I played RE4 HD Remaster with the Ultimate HD Edition about 2 weeks ago after 100% completing RE4R and it blew me away. Really amazing work and shows how much love these folks have for this game. It was quite an amazing experience if I'm to be honest. Having the Remake and this Fan upgraded version of the original is the equivalent of having the cake and eating it. It was so good I finally jumped into the mod scene. Which is something I usually stayed away from. The interface used in this mod is also fantastic. Helping an absolute noob like me do exactly what I wanted/needed.

Thank you for showcase this RE4HD mod; I have been a fan of RE since the original PS era. And although I am glad that Capcom is attempting to support this fan project of RE4, I am still not happy that Capcom deviated from the original story-lines of RE2 and RE3 in their recent remakes. Lastly, on slightly unrelated note regarding @12:24, I'll be _"happy forever"_ if Capcom would actually bring back the Megaman Legends 3 project and conclude the story-line that they never finished~

This mod is frickin' awesome, but theres just this one cave wall that is just so obviously not a flat wall texture that it looks like a bad green screen effect. They stuck a high def as fuck image of a cave from a distance and tried to pass it off as a cave wall from close up, but it has clear depth to it and the objects in front and hanging on it look like they're in front of a green screen. I'm sure it was probably a higher def version of what was originally used but when it was as low res as the original game, it's harder to tell.
@NireFuster2 жыл бұрын
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with my thoughts exactly and I agree 100% on everything. This mod is not only one of the greatest mods ever made but also the real ultimate way to experience RE4 in a true HD way, the passion and effort and time put on this mod is absolutely astounding. There's so much care given to every single little detail, it puts any official HD remaster to shame. I also fully agree on the Remakes sentiment, they're not bad games, but they're not good remakes, and while the HD mods for RE2 and 3 are much smaller in scale, they're still very worthwhile to play through, hell it's the way I experienced RE2 for the first time and I loved every second of it. I'm extremely happy to see that Capcom didn't go ballistic over the mod and actually fully embraced it, which made _everyone_ happy, literally 0 downsides to this.

Thank you, Nerrel for bringing this RE4 Mod to my attention! I’m super impressed and appreciative of these guys’ hard work on one of my favorite games. It blows my mind that two dudes (one who didn’t have much experience in modding and 3D graphics) were so passionate about a game that they went and out did a huge video game company and it was all on their own time outside their day to day jobs. These two guys and whoever else helped make this HD project deserves all the support they can get which is why I’m definitely donating to their project fund.

Dude i finished it yesterday and i was afraid that while i was playing the game, i was gonna gone numb to the upgrades, but i was totally wrong. The new stuff is so strikingly good that i was on awe the whole time (specially the island portion, because it always looked rough). I've been looking forward to this project for like 6 years now and it exceeded all my expectations Edit: i just want all those AI upscaled bachgrounds on 2 and 3 to be aviable in the sourcenext versions :(

This is what we need, not remakes but remasters. We want the original feel of the game with an improved graphics. Remakes can be good but not at the expense of the originals, they should both exist in unison and not made to replace each other.

Popularity ≠ quality. That being said, it's a solid remake. I just despise when people say "This is obviously good! Look at how many people bought/used/downloaded/streamed it!" It's completely irrelevant. Has nothing to do with whether it's good or not. The CoD franchise is worth 31 billion dollars and it's recycled & copied hot trash. Pop music is played all over every radio station, and yet most of it is a soulless cash grab without heart or innovation. Again, popularity has nothing to do with quality. Nothing at all. They're not linked in any way, shape, or form.
