I am about six weeks out following l four and five, l five s one fusion. What the doctor is describing is pretty familiar to me at this point. The first few days were pretty bad, but things have settled down dramatically. I am already much better off than I was before surgery and I seem to be getting better all the time.

Oh thank God. I'm 6 days after laminectomy and 3 level fusion L3 thru L5 and my nerves that before surgery were spasming are now worse, with electrical jolt type of feeling but much more often, nearly constant like they're misfiring and I'm really scared

Hey, David from Edinburgh, Scotland here. I have JUST had l4 l5 microdyscetomy and about 90 minutes after coming round I had hugely painful nerve pain that has only been reduced by oxcodeine. My surgeon says my disc bulge was big ( I was bed bound for 25 days and the nerve has most probably been bruised, can you tell me the timeline between your surgery, the nerve pain appearing and your improvement as I'm struggling a little mentally as I've had a painful herniation for over 6 months now and instead of relief, the pain is worse!!

@glensheeskihire2883 Hi David, I can fill you in because it's now been seven weeks after my surgery but it sounds like you and I had very different surgeries. I did not have any discectomy done at all. I had laminectomy and fusion. Anyway on about day four is when the electrical shock Feelings started and they were similar to what I had before the surgery, but there were many more of them sort of happening all at once.at the end of the 3rd day. It was a terrible and painful feeling like cattle prod jolts. I reached out to my doctor and they called in a steroid pack which I got the next day, however, before I even started the steroid pack they were already calming down. Long story short the electrical shock feeling and lightning strike type jolting is the nerves being freed up and having space again soo they were sparking and firing and coming awake and alive again. And regrowing from the nerve root. That electrical shock type feeling is what it felt like when they were coming alive again from the nerve root, basically. So That process appears to last maybe 4 days. It depends on how compressed your nerves were, I had a bunch of them waking up all at once is why it felt like that. But anyways, it's not a feeling that lasts because then they start growing again. So in my case, it was a very excellent sign and I thank God that I did the surgery before waiting too long and ending up w permanent nerve damage.I just thank God that my nerves responded and started coming back! Once they had the space again. Currently, ALL my pain I gone and I don't take ANY medication for the first time in 7 years, can't believe it. I already feel fantastic and it's not even been 2 months. I wept in my surgeon's office at my 6 week checkup and he asked if he could give me a hug lol. I told him he gave me my life back and now I was finally going to start scuba diving lessons and jogging again and do whatever I wanted! I think I made his day telling him all of that!

I had nerves cut during inguinal hernia surgery. It goes down a bit too far and is really effecting me. If i had known i wouldn't have had the surgery. I had it open this time as last time i had of done laparoscopicly without problems. The mesh just ripped out after the years. This is crap

thanks doctor, yes, I complained of weakness in my left inner leg and calf. I had a full laminectomy of L3, and partials of L2&L4. Prior to the surgery I had a EMG which showed some permanent nerve damage emanating from my left sacro- lumbar plexus . So, recovery of the dead nerves are not possible. I'm fine with that. However, I'm hoping to regain 50% of my leg strength back, as I had some other nerves under attack, but not total dead.

I had L4-L5 fusion surgery 6 1/2 weeks ago. I had bad sciatica on the right leg and numbness on the left leg. The sciatica pain seems to be going away. The numbness, however, on the left hasn’t gone away yet. My surgeon told me the numbness would take longer and did tell me it might not go away at all or maybe be even worse. I was fully aware of this before going into surgery and was willing to take the risk. I’m staying the course and hopeful for a complete recovery which I’m told could be a year to a year and a half out, even if it does happen. I just have to be patient and hope for the best and go on and live my life.

@ I am pretty much resigned to living with this for the rest of my life! This was my fourth Back surgery,and second Fusion.My Back muscles are a mass of scar tissue from removal of the previously implanted screws and rods,and replacing them with double the amount! Nerves do not respond well when they are messed with in these surgeries,and PT did not reverse any of my drop foot! Good luck to you and if you are young enough I hope it helps improve your quality of life,unfortunately that is not my result!

I just had a micro discectomy on my L5-S1 and I have to say my initial pain level went down by 90% I’m on the day after and I’m feel a whole lot better… but I’m still having that electric shock down my leg especially when I cough or sneeze. And I’m still getting a pinch when I sit or stand. But just much less painful than it was before. I’m hoping it’s just residual inflammation that after a week I can start back up on my meloxicam to knock it out. Idk time will tell.

I had surgery march 26 2024 I woke up with no pain even though I still have numbness in my ankle I was told it would take six months to a year for it to come back. I am all right with that because my whole right side was completely numb and I’m sure that my ankle will come back sometime in the future

My surgery was March 25, 2024! I was great until I thought it would be ok to paint my walls using a roller and long handle this past Sunday. That was a mistake now I’m paying for it! I feel so down I really hope it’s just a flare up and nothing permanent. 😢 I have some soreness and tingling like when your about to get a bad sciatica attack. I’m super scared now. It’s been a week and still the same.

2:55-3:15, you mention blood flowing to a nerve and irritating it, if the nerve was pinched for a long time. Could you expand upon that please? How long usually until that dies down? I am 12 days post L4-L5 and L5-S1 left-side microdiscectomy, and the nerve pain has come back horrendously since day 10. :(

Great question. A sudden relief of pressure can allow a sudden influx of blood flow to the area and result in temporary engorgement. If symptoms improve immediately followed by recurrence, it may be an appropriate time to communicate your concerns with your treating provider.

Well I just had neck and I had a Halo too which they didn't tell me I was going to have that. I can feel everything in my neck. It's so uncomfortable having a rod and screws like 12 screws 6 on each side. It hurts so bad for over a month. Tons of tylenols and oxycodones later. I was in tons of pain for over a month. I wish I would have never had it done. Only had it done because somebody told me if I didn't I would be paralyzed down the road. No this is because an unlicensed driver in a truck hit me.

I got back surgery through my stomach and I'm worse! I was told my emg a year later and my nerves are still healing shouldn't it be healed by now! Plus since they went through my stomach I had diarrhea for a year couldn't figure out y so my gi doctor said that my pancreas enzymes are so low. Now I'm going to be on pills for the rest of my life and I don't have diabetes? Explain anything to me

Im still in post surgery pldd my l4-l5, l5-s1, sacroiliac, and piriformis laser/rhyzolisis. Its been 4 weeks im still in nerve pain, so much hip and leg pain. Sometimes its curious is the surgery is succes or not but there’s no pressure in my disc anymore . I have to take pragabline and other painkillers everyday. Nerves not healing after surgery, are why im so reluctant to risk getting surgery. I have muscle weakness, but i cant get a definite answer on whether i can get that back with decompression surgery. The thing that sucks is, you wont know if your nerve damage muscle weakness is permanent until after its probably too late.

Hi! I had surgery on the ulnaris nerve a month and a half ago. Doctors keep saying that the nerve will take months to go back to normal, but I feel something's gone wrong. I can feel the same sensations coming back again as before the surgery. Is there a way to tell if the healing process has reversed itself?

He had this operation recently it’s about 24 hours but still he is feeling completely numbness on his full hand is it normal to happen for all this type of surgery he can't feel anything even if you cut his fingers 😢 or it happens only when the operation is failed?

I am not a doctor, but a fellow survivor of severe nerve damage to my sciatic nerve after a full hip replacement. Thus far, I have had two nerve decompression, one on my sciatic nerve, and one on my perineal nerve. I am two months post op from my nerve decompression and the pain, and discomfort has went from a place where a bed sheet would send me to tears, into handling laying bed better. My pain is still extremely high, and not sure if it will get much better. Only two months post op, and only sharing my story of two nerve decompressions and still having pain.

Daughter had magec rod implant early 2022 and left her with flatback-syndrome and post operative permanent neurological deficit. Post surgery, surgeon explained the intra operative that the neuromonitoring signal disappeared during lumbar screw implant, daughter's leg stopped moving, but they continued with the surgery until the end of the surgery. After the surgery, her legs started moving. We're wondering why they didn't perform the wake up test during the lost of the signal. Daughter woke up from surgery with leg numbness and swallow legs, leg jerking and shaking, hypersensitivity to touch. 2 months post op, loss of bowel and bladder control and it then recovered after 4 months. Since she woke up from the surgery, both legs were with electric shocks pain from lower back down to both feet, daily. She described as tingling, stabbing, needles pinched pain 24/7. It's been 15 months post op now, she's still suffering nerve pain daily. Permanent disability as a result of this outcome. Permanently in wheelchair now. She's still going back to the original surgeon fevery 8 weeks for magec lengthening procedures. The surgeon claimed it was a successful surgery and she needed to have more PT to get back to walking. The question now is how to resolve the Neurological deficit and flatback syndrome issues. She losses her natural lordosis curvature since the op and not able to bear weight to stand or walk upright. With the 24/7 tingling and electric shocks on both legs, it is extremely impossible for her to be able to stand straight to walk. Appreciate any input or advice to help her to get back her life.
