I turned 18 on Sunday, and I'm trying to set up an appointment for therapy, I tried coming out to my parents last summer but they thought instead of being a gay transguy, I should be a tomboy. Im hoping to get into some therapy sessions and in the future bringing my parents so they can understand my situation. How much are average Therapy sessions and any advice on setting one uo or picking a good therapist?? THANKS :D

i came out to my mom a long time ago about having gender issues i was that desperate for therapy (trouble with insurance at the time) and she basically brushed it off and pretended it never happened. so this year i went and looked up gender therapists nearby myself. i was looking on laura's playground and psychology today i believe.. took a while to find one close to me who also took my insurance. had to do a few emails.. but the one person it narrowed down to i went and ended up really liking her : ) it's always awkward with a new therapist but sometimes you just gotta take a leap

If someone had gender dysphoria, but didn't want to take lifelong hormones, would there be any point in seeing a gender therapist? Would a regular therapist be just as good?

I never realized it was THAT important to feel ok with your therapist, because as far as I know there is only 1 in the region here. Last time we had a bit of a rough appointment where she said that she didn't feel the need to use my female name or pronouns at the moment because I still looked SO masculine :/

Dara Hoffman-Fox I'm not sure if that's a good idea :( how should I say this.....it's like she tries to make me understand that I shouldn't take support and acceptance for granted, which isn't really something motivating or supportive that I hoped for in therapy.....But that's all I have right now. I think the best thing I can do is just make appointments further apart from each other. I now go every 3-4 weeks, but I'm gonna ask if it's ok to extend that to 5 weeks or something. I feel like I have to deal with a lot of other stuff too, other then gender related things (I won't go into detail because that will take too long) I told her and my friends that I want to be addressed by my female name and "she" pronouns in about 2-3 weeks, a lot of friends are ok with it already, so if she still things I shouldn't take support/acceptance for granted I will extend the time between appointments even further.....I can't stand it when people try to make me afraid as if everyone is out to get you because of this, while actually everyone except them accept me for who I am....I would feel much more vulnerable and scared if I was afraid of everyone's responds, it's the total opposite of gaining confidence !

Dara Hoffman-Fox @Angel Castillo, for some reason there isn't a reply button under your comment... Perfect timing, I actually just made a video today about how to find a gender therapist! Ask a Gender Therapist: How to Find a Gender Therapist Session rates can vary quite a bit. In general, those who are psychologists/have doctorates tend to charge around $120/hour, Masters level + licensed $75/hour, just Masters without license $50/hour, and if you can find someone with an intern it is usually much lower than that. You can also ask if they offer a sliding scale. Good luck hon!

Dara Hoffman-Fox as for November 2013 one of the 5 clinics in The Netherlands who offers help for transgenders started denying patients because they simply don't have enough manpower and money to handle the demand, I was called to ask if I wanted to move up higher in the list because they hired extra psychologists. I was on a list for my intake interview, I already had my screening (to put me on the list). I said that I wanted to wait until the situation at home was getting better, it's been almost 6 months but things haven't really changed. Mom and dad believe that the therapy is helping me more then enough.....but as you understand, the problem remains, I can't just talk this out of me. I either have to wait until the whole situation at the gender clinic is resolved or I have to give them a call to change my status on the list. but so far I'm going to the gender therapist just to talk. I think I can ask her for a HRT approval eventually, but I feel like it's gonna take a long time and a lot of convincing until she approves it......I'm starting to wish for a more supportive way of treatment, someone who wants to help me, instead of being made aware of what other people think or may think about me, or helping with self improvement or whatever.....

Hi Dara if u have a been with a Counseller that is ur friend and u have been going to see them over a year can send a letter to a doctor to do Hormone Replacement therapy , or do u have to have a none family friend Sarah past or a counselor To transition And do I have to see them for a year in order to transition
