A year before the infamous Mlolongo unforgettable General elections in Kenya (where Mwai Kibaki almost lost his parliamentary seat although he had a much longer line of people behind him), President Daniel arap Moi went on a working visit to the US to Ronald Reagan's White House. Very fascinating footage.

1. Moi was only just consolidating his power in 1987. He was almost there but there were still remnants he was afraid of. He was scared with good reason - African leaders changed more that 25 times in the space of 24 months. Many times violently. 2. Moi was not used to dealing with an open press - he became better. 3. Moi was seriously nervous (for the body language students: fidgeting in his seat, twiddling his thumbs, defensive handling of the rungu). A good protocol team would have coached him. 4. Bush Snr was VP at the time. He was previously CIA director. The Cold War was at its height. 5. Bethwell Kiplagat (second to shake Reagan’s hand) coordinated that trip. He later ruined his reputation when he refused to resign. 5. Secretary of State George Shultz is on Reagan’s right (11:09). He died this month and was about as heavyweight a cabinet member can be without being president or VP. 6. Reagan was already wearing a hearing aid. 7. Reagan wore a tan suit and no one gave him, wacha Obama ajaribu 😂

True, Moi was more charismatic and better with people than Kibaki but that aside this was real nervousness. Watch Moi’s first local TV interview with John Sibi-Okumu of KTN in December 1997. Same behaviour just subtract the rungu and add face-touching, especially rubbing his forehead when asked about whether it was time to retire.

Chris truth be told there is something called social class. Moi never belonged to that class, he was more of an African village elder: very respected members of their tribes people! He was probably brought up respecting hierarchy, hence, looked up to the leader of America as his senior. Other than that, Moi is amongst, the generation that bore the brunt of the white colonialists supremacist mentality, thus, respect and fear of white men was embedded deep into his psyche! Poor Moi, struggled with a foreign language, understandably! Therefore, I assume, there must have been alot of miscommunication in that meeting. It's clear, why Dr. Robert Ouko was resented in Moi's circles. Ouko articulated Moi's philosophy than the Master himself. Moi meant well for Kenya, he should have surrounded himself with able people he trusted to deliver his vision. Paranoia took the better of him sadly.

That is bad politics. We need to embrace our diversity and chose leaders with good moral standings. Truthful, competent, serious and determined to fight corruption, willing to spur economic development, job creation... These are the real issues we should be discussing as opposed to hustlers and dynasties which helps no one.
