Even back in the 90s most people I know who had a Nintendo had a hard time getting most if not all of the games to work. I could only imagine how rare a well working Nintendo must be these days. That alone makes this NES classic worth it. I was a Sega Genesis kid but a lot of friends had the SNES and remember having a lot of fun playing a variety of games on it, that makes me excited to get this SNES classic coming in the mail.
@autumn_breeze6165 жыл бұрын
I bought an NES Classic a while back. Born in the year 2000. I'd never had a chance to play on original hardware other than the time my buddy and I found an NES in his attic one summer with a copy of Super Mario Brothers 3. I got it because even though it's not really original hardware, the emulation is pretty spot on and the controller is dead accurate so I might as well be playing on an NES (with a couple of added bonuses like being able to save in any game, not just games that supported it on NES). I'll never forget the first time I beat Super Mario Brothers. I'd spent the previous night just attempting it over and over, getting closer and closer to the final boss with my friends cheering me on until about 3 am. I have no idea why they were watching me, but it became an event to see if I could actually do it, and every now and again someone would claim that it wasn't that hard and try their hand at the game. The next day, I threw it in and beat it on my second try with nobody watching, so I whipped out my phone and took a picture just to prove it to them. First time beating Mega Man 2, Super Mario Brothers 3, Zelda, and Punch Out as well. Right now I'm grinding away at Final Fantasy. I love playing these older games and seeing where a lot of gaming staples got their roots, as well as the many experimental tactics devs took that ultimately died out as time went on. There's a couple of duds on the console, but the good definitely outweighs the bad. Now I'm planning on getting a SNES Classic as well, before the used prices get too bad once they really start to get scarce. If you've been thinking about getting this console, I'd say go for it. The games are tough and a little dated, but there's a charm to them that you just can't get with modern games. Every time I play it around new people, they want to know what I'm playing, and most of the time they want to try it out. If that doesn't speak to the mystique of the NES I don't know what does.

Thanks for the run-down! Even as someone very familiar with almost all of these ("Startropics" remains a large unknown to me), it was fun to hear your quick commentary on each. My worry about the NES Classic mini-system is the weird controllers, honestly. I know it would be evocative of my childhood to sit down on the floor and look up at the TV, but...let's face it, no adult wants to do that anymore. I'm genuinely concerned the lack of wireless controllers will hurt this system greatly.

Completely agree. A Double Dragon game without being able to play Double the Dragons is ridiculous. Although, the real correct choice was River City Ransom. I think that's the only game that the Famicom Mini is getting that's an improvement over the NES Classic.

The NES classic would have been perfect if there was an online store included where you could easily purchase additional games to add. 30 games is a good start but not nearly good enough. Nintendo easily could have done this and made more money. Especially when Nintendo has such an enormous library and left off many classics like original Contra, Pro Wrestling, original Double Dragon, Kung Fu, RC Pro Am, etc...The list goes on and on. Most people who bought this don't have the expertise where they are going to try to modify the system to get all the games.

Really liked this video, but I wish it went into more of an explanation of the technical specs. Like what is actually inside the NES mini, is it an emulator? how does it play on modern HD Widescreen TVs with the framerate issues and how the old NES games weren't designed for modern TVs and how the HMDI output is different to the older cables that were originally used etc, etc.

It emulates the original system very well, from what I've seen. Then again, so do all the free emulators out there. There are three display modes: CRT, 4:3 and Pixel-Perfect. The CRT mode just applies a silly overlay on the picture, 4:3 displays the game at an aspect ratio of 4:3 and Pixel-Perfect displays at 1:1.

I remember Double Dragon II being much better than the first one, so maybe that explains that one, but there are a few real head-scratchers on here. I don't know anyone who fondly remembers Super-C. Everyone will be wishing Contra was on there instead of that one. Pac Man, Galaga, and Donkey Kong are not games I really associate with the NES either. And no one will give a shit about Mario Brothers after playing it for five minutes.

I agree with Double Dragon II over the original. More levels, two-player games, and no need to rely on that back elbow. People would cry if Contra was there without the 30-life code, but I would've included it. Super C is more appealing visually, but too easy, and not the classic the first one was. Castlevania 2 was a horrible game. I'd be happier if it had been forgotten. Battletoads, anyone? I can't see anyone justifying Pac Man or Balloon Fight over games like Strider or Bionic Commando. Donkey Kong, I get, because it's the first time anyone saw Mario, but choosing Donkey Kong Jr over something essential like Kung Fu? Batman, and either of the Ninja Turtles games were probably omitted due to licensing, which I get.

I don't know. Looking at these games...I'm just not interested in getting this thing. I've already got Mario All Stars for Wii and got the Mega Man collection on PS4 so there goes that part for me. The rest of the games here...just doesn't do anything for me. I played them as a kid but the idea of going back to play Bubble Bobble doesn't sound that thrilling. One thing I learned from the countless Genesis plug and play systems is that a lot of the older games just don't age that well. What seemed fun when I was 11 isn't much fun replaying them as an adult.
