I remember me and my brother being in Walmart's game section when a couple employees discreetly walked right in front of us where one restocked NES Classic Edition while the other employee was on look out. They clearly knew how rabid some people were for those. I think they only put 8 of them behind the glass and the moment they were done, my brother and I looked at each other, and knew what we had to do. We pitched in money together and nabbed one. Very cool game system to have as someone who never really bothered to collect for NES so it was enough dosage of NES for someone like me.

Time for an old man story lol. Back in 1985, THE GI Joe figure to have was Snake Eyes v. 2 (the classic ninja look with the gray visor and Timber) I had looked and looked but they were always sold out. One day I'm at Kmart with my grandma and after looking through the figures they had, I bought Shipwreck and Storm Shadow (they actually had a Storm Shadow, hard to believe I know if you lived through that era) and she asked if I wanted another one because I think they were on sale for like 3 for 2, bogo basically. I told her who I was looking for and how nobody had him because people were buying all the ones they found, so being a grandma and with the grandmotherly powers of not giving a flip, she walked into their stockroom, found a case of GI Joe figures, opened it up and found four Snake Eyes. She put them all in the cart and said "one is for you to keep and use the other ones to trade people at school". I can't remember who I traded with but I got a Skystriker, G1 Soundwave with five of his cassettes for two of them and gave the fourth one to my cousin for Christmas. Never doubt the powers of a grandma lol

I remember being 11 years old just getting into emulation and so I was getting into the NES library and being really excited for this thing, especially since it used a replica of an original NES controller so it was the closest I would get to a faithful NES experience at that age. Unironically, I wouldn't mind if they tried Ice Climbers again. Or what if they just took all their dormant NES/SNES IPs and made a new game utilizing all of the characters. I'm not talking about something like NES Remix or World Championships. I mean a modern game with a unique story and gameplay that takes advantage of each IP. Something like Captain Rainbow.

I remember just how difficult it was to find one of these. After a couple months of trying to get one at any store to no avail, I just gave up. Didn't want to deal with scalpers. That is until a year later when I'm in Argentina visiting family. I'm in an appliance store with my mom, and I see the NES classic on the very bottom of a glass case, official Nintendo seal and everything. Asked to buy it immediately. I was so happy. I think the SNES classic was announced shortly after I got home, but I didn't want to bother with the chase at that point.

I got lucky getting my SNES Classic. I just happened to be in a Best Buy when they had like just received a new shipment. They didn't even have time to put price tags on them. I asked an employee if they were for sale, and he said they were. I grabbed one before the mob had a chance to buy them all up. Funny thing is that the SNES Classic is pretty cheap on the secondary market compared to the NES Classic. But I do not regret my purchase.

I remember my orthodontist's office had an NES Classic, of all places. It was in a little room where you could just play while you wait (there used to be an iPad with mobile games on it for the same purpose). It was really fun going there for my brace check-up and just flicking on whatever NES game I felt like playing at the time. I remember getting pretty far in Mega Man 2, probably like halfway or more through all the Robot Masters before I had to actually go to my check-up. Sadly, it was taken away when the pandemic hit, and when it re-opened the room was blocked with chairs and the NES wasn't there anymore.

I always use the CRT mode. It's because quite literally that is the way the games were meant to be played. The games were never expected to be blocky. They relied on the blurriness of the CRT to round out shapes. That love for the blocky look seems to mostly come from people who grew up on emulators. To each his own, but that's why they always put that mode on there. And for what it's worth the NES Classic has a pretty great CRT mode.
@gamerfly101
@gamerfly101 26 күн бұрын
The CRT mode on the Nintendo consoles is not good. They are just an image overlay that doesn't recreate the dithering effects actual crt's do. I use crt filters on emulators that mimmick the effects of a crt, and I wish these mini consoles did the same.
@zwenkwiel816

The mini console modding scene that spawned out of this thing really elevated all the subsequent mini consoles from novelty (or lazy, barely-functional nostalgic cash grab in the worst cases) to legitimately some of my favourite ways to play old systems outside of real hardware, and as a bonus made me much more confident in my ability to get what I want out of RetroArch. The fact that modders even managed to turn the PlayStation Classic into something worth giving a single shit about is still mind-blowing to me given the negative amount of effort Sony put into that thing.

I think a good part of why the Mini-Console craze died down was due to... well, once you enter the 5th Generation of consoles, it becomes a hell of a lot harder to emulate the games from there. Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, it's only relatively recently that emulation for those consoles have gotten to an acceptable state, and even then you can see Nintendo still dealing with the nightmare of the N64. This being said I do wish Nintendo would do mini consoles for the Gameboy line.

This also marks the start of Nintendo's modern emulation efforts, Nintendo has an European studio which handles that, and I don't know if that studio handled previous efforts, but since they like to reset their retro library and emulators every generation, the ones the Switch uses started here. And it was good to remember that, the emulation for this Mini console was superb, especially in comparison to Wii U, wished we got a N64 mini console, because that would have forced the studio to make a proper good emulator for N64, instead of the rushed thing we got.

Tetris is in rights hell to be sure. I think when the Classic launched, Ubisoft had the exclusive licensing? As for the GenMini version, I think the fact that it was a) unreleased and b) an unauthorized port to begin with (which is why it didn't come out, iirc), meant that there wasn't really a legal basis to worry about since...y'know, it was illegal to start and now 2 lifetimes later, no one at the Tetris company gave a feck enough to figure out a way to challenge it.
@MegaZeta
@MegaZeta 25 күн бұрын
The target customers for this device likely wouldn't even remember _Tetris_ as a NES game and would tend to think of it as belonging to the Game Boy. It wouldn't sell this system as the impulse buy for which it was marketed, which is a problem with more than one game that actually DID make it onto this list. Maybe Nintendo's research said _"30 games, bare minimum, and we need them approved yesterday."_

Yeah, if you're rolling the dice on the U.S. market, they'll probably remember the Tengen black cart second, the Game Boy game first. The gray Nintendo-licensed cart? A distant third, if they remember it at all. Much of the U.S. market of the time likely thought Tetris was a Game Boy exclusive during the NES era, because it was the release title for the Game Boy. I don't think it would sell many of these devices.

The NES Classic was awesome - honestly it felt like it was only missing ONE thing that would have really put it over the top compared to any other "classic" out there, and that's fullscreen mode. "Why?" you ask. "Why would you want to stretch out your picture"? It's because a mode like that isn't designed for a 16:9 TV - it's for the retro enthusiasts Scott has mentioned that have a 4:3 CRT television. I've got one with an HDMI port and another one with an adapter; I can take the Genesis Classic and full screen mode basically turns it into the same picture I had as a kid, but the NES and SNES classic crushes the image into a tiny vertical strip in the middle of the screen.

The Tetris was originally sold and marketed by the Soviet monopoly on import export of electronic goods Elektronorgtechnica. Following the end of the Soviet Union it continued to be a public organisation until 1996. When it privatised the rights went back to the original designer who set up the Tetris company to licence the game. From what I understand of soviet commerce in the 80s Alexey Pajitnov would have been entitled to set up his own company to sell Tetris within the Soviet Union except that he had programmed the game while at the Soviet academy of sciences, which made the game property of the Soviet government. This is not so different from how in the West if you coded the game on company time the game would belong to the company. Honestly trying to read up on the history of Tetris at this time and who owned what and where royalties were going is an absolute minefield. Just as confusing as Western corporate mergers even though there's only two parties.

The CRT mode is because a lot of these sprites were designed with the understanding that CRT televisions would distort the sprites, and some developers worked with that. You compare how, say, Link in Zelda II looks on a CRT to your average HD display, and you realize they were using the limitations to make shapes that looked a lot less rigid than they do without a CRT television (or a filter). Sorry if I explained that weirdly, this isn't really my area of expertise, but I've seen people smarter than me explain it, so I thought I'd spread the message.

I was working at Micro Center at the time of its release and my store got 5 of them, but employees were not allowed to buy them. By some miracle my girlfriend came to the store to buy something with her boss, and I had her buy it for me. I always got the playing with power books

I’ll always remember waiting in line for these things. I was dating this chick a couple towns over at the time, she went to work and I had the day off, saw there was a GameStop nearby and drove over there an hour or 2 before they opened. No one was there yet so I sat in my car. 2 cars drove up and the people got out immediately and stood by the door so I followed as more cars started pulling in. I was the 4th person in line, and a worker came out and said they only had 4 NES Classics total. The guy behind me was super bummed, but then the guy and girl in front of me said they were together and just getting 1, so the guy behind me almost exploded in excitement as he realized he was actually gonna get one. Like his eyes got welled up a bit with happy tears

I actually didn’t buy the NES classic, but my sister gave it to me once she already got NES games on Switch online, I mostly play it at parties or when I go to hotel rooms because of its easy connection and also it’s great on a ViewSonic monitor!

30:00 the nes classic controller worked perfectly for shovel knight on wii u, you have to press select to choose the secondary weapons but that only gives it the mega man feel to it so I didn't mind it.

One of my favorite things about this release, besides the new controllers for my Wii and Wii U, was the website, it included instruction manuals for every game, but also, new interviews with the developers, revealing information in a similar way to Iwata Asks, honestly that made me really happy, that in a way that continued, then the same happened with the SNES Classic Edition.

I still play mine to this very day! I ended up adding a bunch of games to it so that definitely helps keep my interest. I got mine by checking Walmart at 3am while driving home from a friend's house, and they had just gotten two in stock. Kinda regret not buying both of them, but I wanted someone else to enjoy getting one too.

I love CRT mode as someone who doesn’t have the space for a CRT! Old games were made with CRTs in mind, and they provide a softening effect that many games were made to make use of. There are some “effects” are made to make use of the dithering of CRT, for example to create transparency or effects like waterfalls in some older games. And even if I did, it’s nice to have if you want the convenience of playing old games on a new TV.

I remember going into the electronic section of my local Target store back in holiday 2018. I discovered both a NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition on the shelf. Knowing they would both be gone if I passed them by, I splurged the ~$130 to get them both. I haven't played them much, but it's nice to simply have them just in case the desire kicks in.

I bought the NES classic at the alongside the SNES classic at launch, the first time I was able to play any of the classic Nintendo games. These were my only systems along side a Wii. Several years later I’m concerned about the picture quality of a CRT for my recently purchased NES, making sure my Wii U I got in 23 is nicely polished and giving Nintendo money for games that haven’t realized. Good play Nintendo.
