I am 100% going to buy this for me and my kids who are 6 & 7. I was born in 1980 and I was an only child with a single mother so I had video games my whole life. Atari, NES, Genesis, SNES, PS1, etc. For years now I've wanted to play a lot of these NES games and my only option was buying a Wii/WiiU and I just can't afford to go that route. I briefly looked into buying an original NES but that's an even more expensive option and then I'd have the headache of possible technical issues with old systems. I just can't wait to finally be able to share these games with my boys. They know of a lot of them but only from The Wizard and KZbin. I still remember all the little secrets in SMB3 even after all these years. And I was the only kid in my school who beat Punch Out. And I never got into Zelda or Metroid so those will be new to me too. And maybe now that I'm grown up I'll be able to finally figure out how to beat Mega Man and Castlevania.

Awesome to hear!! :) I can only imagine the excitement in sharing such things with your children. If I ever do have any, they will be very well-acquainted indeed with my Nintendo 64, hahaha! I'm sure you have, but have you heard of emulators? You can play NES games on a computer! (And just about any device nowadays, though a smartphone isn't recommended due touch screen controls not being all that handy.)

+ahums16 Yeah, I don't currently own a computer and there's something about a controller that I just like better anyway.

rojoshow13 Ah, sorry about that. I agree entirely, I'd LOVE for them to come out with a USB adapter specifically for this NES gamepad (some people or small companies or something have made them for many consoles, so you can use original controllers for emulation and stuff). Unless it's for real nostalgia or something, usually a game can't maintain my attention long on an emulator, and I think it's simply because I'm using a keyboard.
@rojoshow13
@rojoshow13 8 жыл бұрын
+chuckobscure Yeah, I owned Punch Out and it took me a really long time, and many many failures but I finally figured every guy out. And I never owned any of the Mega Man games...I rented it all the time and I could never beat it over a weekend. Pretty much any game I owned ie SMB3, I beat. And the ones I never owned but rented ie Castlevania, Mega Man, close many times but no cigar.

they could combine it with an amiibo type idea. THey did it with flash cards before either. It doesn't have to be a cart. Just some storage and something that gives you the game. But I don't think that's how these things work. It's a one time purchase type thing.

If it's hard doesn't mean it's bad. And I know that there are a lot of games that are hard because of bad controls, bad game design and other technical flows like the camera not being able to catch up with the character or whatever but I dont see any of those things in G&G. Sure it has its problems and it's far from being a 5 star game but still, not THAT far. Sure it's not as polished as Castlevania 1 but I'd play g&g over it any day.

Have to disagree a little on Tecmo Bowl being more played than Tecmo Super Bowl. Super Bowl was far superior and there is a large amount of people who referred to Super Bowl as just "Tecmo Bowl". The simple reason for Tecmo Bowl being chosen over Tecmo Super Bowl is the presence of the NFL license. Either Nintendo did not want to pay the extra cash to the NFL or they were unable to republish the game due to EA's exclusive license it currently has with the NFL. Regardless, I am very excited about this product and I hope it does well enough for there to be a SNES or even possibly an N64 version.

Fair enough. Honestly, I am amazed at the 3rd party support for this product. Kudos to Nintendo for going the extra mile and securing a title like Tecmo Bowl when they could have mailed it in by using their own (inferior) title, Play Action Football.

I told my coworker I found an NES a few years back for about $4 at a thrift store that we found out we both love going to. She got so ecstatic and said she wishes she could find one for that but then she mentioned not knowing how to hook it up to her hdtv and all of the issues that the average person would have. This would be perfect for someone like her. Hell, if my girlfriend got me this for our anniversary or christmas I'd still be happy. She loves bubble bobble and I can see us spending hours playing just that. There is a market for this even if you yourself don't care much for it. I already have my NES with a multicart with 150 original games but its not HD. For $60 to play most of the games I'd care about in HD, with a bunch of games I know my girlfriend, little sister, and other friends would want to play, this is a fantastic deal.

We'd most likely be able to get Banjo Kazooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day. There's no way we'd get both banjo games though. Maybe we could get lucky and get Jet Force Gemini or Perfect Dark, but probably not both. We'd get DK 64 and probably Diddy Kong racing which are both Rare. The biggest problem would be that it would feel incomplete without Goldeneye, which even Rare and Microsoft can't get anymore, but could you imagine the hype if they somehow got it for an N64 mini, it would be insane.

I've pre-ordered one for my little girl who will be almost 3 years old this Christmas. She tries to play Mario Kart on my wii u and can't get the coordination together. This is safe content wise and simple for her to get engaged in gaming. I'm excited that she will be able to experience all these games for the first time with unjaded fresh eyes and I'll be able to revisit them with her. This is an extremely smart move before NX to remind people how they fell in love with their consoles to begin with.

Kevin De Bondt I am citing a industry news article I red about 3 - 4 years ago. forget which outlet it was but it pretty much confirms. around the same time, there were rumors of a retro device created by Nintendo. And the same day Wisdom Tree announces the are working on a NES clone in the shape of a controller ! which there is a kickstarter for today .people were speculating as they are today, with same arguments. and I'm fairly certain that a Nintendo engineer confirms it as well on one of the you tube forums. its been a while and I forget the original thread. Believe me or not but the NES original hardware is dead. only modders and people with original carts are keeping the NES alive. here is an idea ? why not try to get Nintendo of America to Fix a broken NES ? I bet they cant ! though maybe the repair techs can tell you why ?

a good thing about this is that for the pricepoint it becomes a great christmas present for a younger person, i got given an old NES when i was maybe 3 or 4 ( around 1996/7) the games are simple enough for a youngster to get into and engaging enough to keep them (and older players) coming back periodically for a few years. the 3ds ports of pokemon r/b/y showed how well an older game can sell based on the nostalgia and/or reputation of the title while being near enough unchanged

You asked in the video Pat what suddenly made Nintendo do refocus on its retro division, and I think I have the answer. Nintendo said recently that their focus is to strengthen it's visibility on their IPs, so having a clone console with most of its major properties is a perfect way to do so. With this console they can ignite the nostalgia factor for people who haven't played an NES for decades, as well as give it's library of games more mainstream exposure to younger crowds. This will be key for getting people excited for things like the Nintendo theme park attraction and it's movie lineup.

The best thing about retro-style consoles is that they're easy to use, more-so when the games are built-in. I can give this to my nephews and they can plug it in and play without any fiddling on my part. The biggest problem with emulators/Pi based systems is all the gotchas and how much you have to fiddle with it, because at the end of the day it is still a full computer with just some apps running on top of it. I've built Pi-based systems as "appliance-like" as I can, hiding away as much cruft as possible, but there's always something - an app crashes and takes you to a command line, or different emulators have different commands to bring up menus, etc. That's fine for me, but for anyone else there's always the point at which I need to come over and "fix it" for them.

Pat, do you render with Sony Vegas? The motion in most of your videos has ghosting that's characteristic of Sony Vegas defaults. If you do use Vegas and you want to get rid of that, left-click on the video on your video track (to make sure you have just the video track selected and not video + audio), then right-click on the video, choose Properties, then check the "Disable resample" radio button and click OK. You'll need to do that same thing for each video/clip you have, so if you import multiple clips, be aware of that. Also, if you're using one large clip, disable resampling first, and then as you split/edit your clip, each sub-clip therefrom will already have that property applied to it! Just disregard this whole thing if you don't use Vegas, obviously, lol. =)

I think this is the perfect thing for new gamers. My roommate and her daughter both wanted to try out gaming but are intimidated by my ps4 controller and don't want to go out and buy a wii in case they don't really like it, so I think this with its variety is perfect for them. For me it's definitely nostalgia, can't wait to play the smb games with them and relive all those first time experiemces with them, plus there's a good amount I've never played. Everyone I knew, me included, never got single player games, so there's like 13-15 on that list which I've never touched, so sweet for me even if they don't like it.

I think it's brilliant considering retro is cool again, the 80's is cool again. You've got genres of music now that mimic 80's synths, you've got retro chiptune music and you've of coarse got the new games that imitate the retro pixel-art style. I think it's really the perfect time to release something like this.

the thing is to, theres no reason why there couldn't be an SD card slot (or DS Slot, since they have 1000's of them already) under the flap in the front, then later release a basically a DS game that will give you more games at another 30. if next summer they released, another 15 games at 30 using the tech and parts they already have from the DS to make a cart to fit in the thing, i have no doubt that would sell as well.

My wife doesn't want a PC in our living room, we can't fit one. I had a Pi and it was a pain in the ass to work with. I keep my NES in my game room and don't want to buy another, nor do I want my carts out in the living room. I'm assuming its going to depreciate in value at the same rate current gen games do today. Most current gen games drop in price relatively fast within a couple months for new and used copies especially online. Along with flash sales that decrease the price even more, as the new Doom came out in early May its already been featured on several Amazon flash sales for as low as $24.99 for a brand new copy within 2 months of release. Since I highly doubt Nintendo is going to make a limited quantity of mini-NES consoles it wont retain its $60 price tag value for long after the initial holiday demand. I also don't think in the current market it will retain many consumers attention for very long either even though retro games are all the rage today and it has a great selection of games, it is just a glorified emulator.

This brings me close to the nostalgic feeling of back then when I owned a nes, but this time I won't have to blow through the cartridges or clean them with alcohol, or spend a ton of money on another old nes and all the games. I can just buy this and still have that nostalgic feeling, and something that can be a collectors item. Yeah, it won't be the same thing as a real nes or worth as much. But as someone who isn't that hardcore with retro gaming, and just wants something to remind myself of some of the games I played growing up, this is good for me. I'm more of a PC gamer, and this sitting around for only 60 bucks is a go.

As someone who can't get highspeed internet at my home so I can't use the Virtual Console and and someone who has an NES but it's getting harder and harder to use due to the flashing red light of death I have to say this console is for me and I am surprised and very happy Nintendo is making it. The fact that it has HDMI out so I don't have to swap this console's connectors out all the time with the one RCA port that my living room Tv has is just icing on the cake and the extra controller is priced just right. So while I know I am in the minority of gamers, that is still living in an area without highspeed internet, I have to say this console is for me and I am very happy with this out of nowhere news from Nintendo and for me personally I don't see any downside to this.

Maybe the release timing this year is to coincide with the 30th anniversary releases of Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus, but maybe also a kind-of 30th anniversary celebration of the first full year the Nintendo was available. 86 was probably a much more profitable year for the company than 1985. As far as this, while I do have my original system hooked-up right now to my TV, and I have a PowerPak, and I've been playing different emulators for years, I want this to support Nintendo, and to support their decision to embrace this type of product - one that saves people from buying a system and then having to make individual purchases at $5.00 on virtual console.

It's marketed at the 95% of people that don't already have an original Nintendo, emulator, etc. I think saying 99.9 % is an exaggeration. A TON more people are into retro gaming now. I think this is GREAT timing by Nintendo. Something like this wouldn't make as much a few years ago. I sure hope I can find one at the stores, but it may sell out everywhere. (I'm not the type to stand in line or show up at a store before they open). The buzz has died down lately, but as we get closer to Christmas, the hype will go through the roof!

It would be great, but I'm pretty sure that even this little NES would be emulated with the same emulator that nintendo uses on the wii/wii u/3ds. So I'm guessing that the n64 would be emulated too. I could be wrong as I don't know much about it, but it most likely would. Although 100% agreed on cartridge slots. If they released a $100 version of this NES machine with a cartridge slot I'd buy it. Way cheaper than paying for an hdmi or rgb mod and still an official nintendo console.

NES Emulation has honestly grown to be the best way to play NES games in 2016 so its perfectly logical for them to go that route for this. For N64 however they would probably have to create a miniature modern version of the original hardware if they want to venture past the handful of properly emulated N64 games. Since they know the schematics of the N64 on a intimate level i'm sure they can produce a modern N64 board thats capable of 1080p upscaling, HDD gamesaves and at least some network features by now. Especially on dedicated hardware specifically designed for the purpose of playing N64 games. Nintendo has proven to be capable of spot on N64 emulation even on Wii/GC level specs while the N64 emulation community with overkill PC rigs continue to scratch their heads lol. The thing with a cartridge slot could probably be about the size of a PSTV if they wanted it to be.
@TacticalPower88
@TacticalPower88 8 жыл бұрын
The HDMI mod for the N64 is expensive as hell and there are hardware limitations that could be lifted with a modern N64 revision that would make it more viable than just slapping a HDMI port in a old N64.

An important thing to note about the game selection is that all the games have already been converted to either the Wii or Wii U's Virtual Console already. Which is why Tecmo Bowl is on there instead of Super Bowl and why Contra 1 isn't on there. That's why no Dragon Warrior, since none of those games came to the US VC. Doesn't explain the lack of Mega Man 3 or Ice Hockey, though. The lack of other sports titles is a bit baffling, though.

I think I know the reason why the original Contra isn't on there, but it raises more questions than it answers. See Contra never came to the Virtual Console because in Japan the game outsourced the work of it's Famicom cutscenes to a third party. Konami didn't want to pay that team any money to have the game on the VC, and they didn't want to alter the content. Thus Japan doesn't get the game, the west doesn't get it's version (despite not having the cutscenes) and thus neither does this new NES. Actually I'm more surprised that Castlevania II Simon's Quest is on there but not Castlevania III Dracula's Curse since Simon's Quest is such a deviation from the original requiring a walk-through but Dracula's Curse is more like the original. Largely they needed to stop a 30 games for some reason, so they made a good cross-section of the best selling and most influencial games.

That makes sense, they do that with the Atari every year. But I do think that Nintendo missed an opportunity for more sales by not having a way to download more games from the eshop... but I guess then it competes directly with the Wii U. Then again, it already is competing with it because speculation is that it will outsell the Wii U over the holidays. They probably couldn't do this with the N64 however because at most the Virtual Console has only ever had about a dozen or so N64 games.

As much as I hate to say it, I think the reason this is coming out now is because Iwata passed and now with Kimishima, the company has been doing a lot of restructuring and changing the focus of the brand to better keep with the times. Nothing but respect for Iwata, he brought the company great success at times, especially with the DS and Wii, but he also seemed to have trouble bringing a modern vision to the company in his later years. While the decision to enter into the mobile market was ultimately made under his leadership, he was very hesitant (or stubborn) and resisted that move until shortly before his death. Under Kimishima, it seems Nintendo is finally getting with the times and it's already paying off for them.

My guess on Castlevania 3 would be an emulation issue as it's among the most difficult games in the NES library to emulate. Even though I still have an NES that semi-works, the lag makes games like Punchout unplayable at times. Hopefully since this goes through HDMI it will work well on modern TVs. Looking forward to finally be able to get my daughter (who's 9 now) into some of my favorite games of my youth. Really wish Tecmo Super Bowl had made the cut, though.
