Suddenly I'm 7 again, sitting in my living room playing, with my father coming in, stomping his feet and saying "what an incredible joyful tune". 🌟🤗
@40KoopasWereHere2 жыл бұрын
Lucky you. My dad would have come stomping down the stairs screaming at me about why the f I was playing video games instead of doing my homework. I ended up overhand-throwing my NES at his head and it exploded on the concrete wall of the basement after I'd had enough of that. Fortunately for him he dodged it.
@troywright359 Жыл бұрын
I remember grandpappy sleeping on the sofa, stomping his feet in his sleep to the soundtrack. He'd wake up whistling the tune and not even know why. Me and bro laughed and laughed. Then we went and played He man outside and bro was Skeletor. He didn't care much none for always having to be that villain, but I was older by a whole 13 months so i had final say! When he got bigger and tried to fight me, I choked him out with the nes controller wire. ....i don't remember much, I guess I kinda blacked out. But I went to stay with a foster family for a while. Good times.

One thing to notice, the themes that are different on these Famicom Disk System versions are the ones that play when there's not action.
@vuurniacsquarewave50919 жыл бұрын
+alienspacebat I'm not sure why though, I think the games used the extra FDS channel for sound effects, so the only time they used it in the music was when absolutely no sound effects could ever play.
@alienspacebat52189 жыл бұрын
za909returns Might not have been the best choice, as Zelda 1 was one of these games too and some sound effects sounded notably sillier on the Disk System. I don't know about other games, but probably so for them too...

+alienspacebat The FDS version of Castlevania II does use the extra FDS channel when there's action, although the cart version sounds better (it even has PCM drums!)
@vuurniacsquarewave50919 жыл бұрын
cuba200614 The FDS version has a sampled kick drum, but it's not all that great. Of course that was Konami, and I presume the game never used the FDS channel for sound effects, only the standard ones.
@alienspacebat52189 жыл бұрын
cuba200614 Yeah, Konami did things differently than Nintendo. They used the extra channel as part of the music and kept sound effects on the classic noise channel. I think that was a better choice.

The Game Over track (12:13) sounds a lot better on this. I guess they just cut out the lead synth and called it a day for the NES version.
@1x4x99 жыл бұрын
vinceandlilly The FDS actually had additional sound channels, one of them being a wavetable lookup. Because of the infinite wisdom of NOA, they decided to map the 16 pins used on the Famicom for external sound chips TO THE BOTTOM of the console, which was never used for anything. This is why many Family Computer games have superior music to their Nintendo Entertainment System counterparts.
@YellowFroggy339 жыл бұрын
vinceandlilly Scary!

Mister BluntSA That's because the extra channels were in the Disk System, thus not being in the NES and there was no NES Disk System, therefore not having the channels.
@1x4x99 жыл бұрын
Jacob Bramer I am aware of that. The wavetable hardware and extra channels were on a PCB inside the cartridge that (was hardwired to the Disk System, and) attached to the Famicom itself. Think it either had 32 or 64KB of RAM to hold floppy data as well.
@vuurniacsquarewave50919 жыл бұрын
+Mister BluntSA There is actually only one extra channel, but it is a wavetable like you said. It's similar to the wavetable channel of the Gameboy, except it has a 6-bit wavetable whereas the Gameboy has a 4-bit one.

And this is coming from a floppy disk-based game system? I'm impressed, sounds even better than the U.S. NES cartridge.
@VinLAURiA11 жыл бұрын
The Famicom Disk System had a bit of extra audio hardware on it that augmented the console's own sound chip, so FDS games tended to have more complex music than their cartridge counterparts. A lot of disc modules for earlier consoles boosted some other capability; the 64DD made similar augmentations to the N64's sound card and the SEGA CD gave the Genesis the ability to do Mode 7 graphics.

Famicom Disk System sound chip: Ricoh RP2C33 ------------------ it sounds like Wavetabled-FM analog synth feeling, fat & rich. which PC & NES could not emulate it. The Ricoh RP2C33, used by the Famicom Disk System, adds one extra sound channel with primitive wavetable support. FDS Produces waves using 64 × 64 custom wavetables with 33 volume settings. Although the latest FamiTracker version supports volume envelopes that go all the way up to 32, the volume column in the pattern editor will max out at 0x0F.

Why is older game music so much better?
@the-NightStar4 жыл бұрын
That's really subjective. Personally I love the aesthetic of classic 8-Bit grandly, but I know it's just my nostalgia talking.
@Rhannmah4 жыл бұрын
@@the-NightStar It's not just nostalgia. Older game music is much more memorable because of an immensely strong focus on melody. Often, like in the case of Stage 2 music here, multiple interwoven melodies across multiple instruments. Melodic music is what humans seem to remember best. Modern game music is often more emotive, more focused on giving you a specific feeling for a specific scene, but is much less memorable. In fact, its primary function is to not be memorable to not deter from the events onscreen. But at the same time, the music by itself doesn't bring up half the emotions that old game music will. New music is a storytelling tool, old music is a story in and of itself.

The game originally came out on the Famicom Disk System (FDS), just like other classics of the era, most notably the first Zelda and Metroid games. The FDS had an extra sound channel that could produce more complex wave forms, opening up new alleys for composers. However, most games - including this one - used this channel primarily for sound effects, which means that it was only part of the music in tracks where there are none, such as the title theme, stage clear theme, game over theme or ending theme.
