Control Systems: Limitations of Mason’s Gain Rule
Topics discussed:
1. Discussion on Limitations of Mason’s Gain Rule.
2. Calculation of Transfer Function of an SFG having Self Loop of unity gain (by using Mason’s Gain Rule).
3. Calculation of Transfer Function of an SFG having Self Loop of any gain present at the Input node (by using Mason’s Gain Rule).

Thanks again for taking the time to make and share another video! I have to confess that I feel a bit odd about the content in this one. I feel like both of the examples you discussed, namely a self-loop with unity (positive) gain and a self-loop at an input node, aren't limitations of Mason's gain rule per se. Rather, I think they represent inherent issues of the systems. For the system with the self loop, as you note at 2:10, the equation x = R + x is only valid when the input R is equal to zero. If the input isn't zero, then the system is unstable and the output blows up, and I think this is why Mason's gain rule gives a zero in the denominator. For the system with the self-loop at the input, I also think the issue is with the system and not with Mason's gain rule. If I am designing a circuit that is supposed to take an input, but then I short another signal onto it, that's bad design and could damage what I'm trying to build. I don't think that adding a pseudo-input node or getting rid of the self-loop are just workarounds for Mason's gain rule; rather, I think they are genuine steps that would need to be taken to make the system stable. Ultimately, I think both examples (as initially described) were unstable systems, and it would be misleading to calculate or say that *anything* was a valid transfer function for either of them. Does that make sense, or am I not understanding? Either way, I would appreciate your feedback (no pun intended), and I'd like to say again that I am really appreciative of everything you have done for the community!

@ 21:11 what is the point of a self loop with gain -1 at the input if it has no effect on the overall transfer function? ….what is the purpose of the any self loop at the input if it is just removed and not taken into consideration…why have it there in the first place?….and how does a self loop at the input map over to a block diagram?….can you please show an example of a practical control system with a self loop at the input ?

in the first example for eliminating the self loop with unity gain ,do we also remove the node as it is shown or was it an error please clarify.
