He should have never moved out of the lyric tenor repertoire. Misguided by people around him or driven by his own ambitions, he beefed up his voice to sound big. I heard him live early in his career in "The Pear Fishers". One of the most beautiful lyric tenor voices I've ever heard. Those heavy roles such as Calaf and Radamés, put an end to that. He died too soon. Rest in peace.

My first ever Calaf was w/ Helge Roswenge in East Berlin in 1960. After that I saw the Nilsson/Corelli Met production twice and have seen it numerous times since with different Calafs. By far, the greatest since Corelli were those 2009 performances w/Giordani. He was spectacular!

And because it is rare for me to talk to someone who heard these voices in person, I ask, who was the best? :-)
@maddywong11215 жыл бұрын
moorfan: the best and most thrilling was Corelli but he had Birgit Nilsson as a partner and had to keep up. Giordani was on that level when I heard him.. Pavarotti, in great voice in 1978(?) w/ Caballe in S.F. was beautifully sung as well as Domingo/Marton @ Met, Martinucci (w.Dimitrtova @ Met) lacked the power to keep up w/her. Icelandic tenor Kris Johannsson had the power but bellowed too often. I can't remember Roswenge but my program says it was stage by Jean Pierre Ponnelle!

prosdocimo As GODS WORD says death is truly mankinds enemy . my sincere condolences to his family and friends. Death is always painful for those that survived especially when it's not expected. My dear daughter Danielle died @ the tender age of 31 after 13 horrific painful days in the Intensive Care Unit at the Mayo Hospital. She is still deeply loved and we think of her constantly in our minds until we see her again. God's word the Bible says the righteous will inherit the earth and live forever upon it under perfect conditions. God the Creator can do many things but one thing that he cannot do is lie. Man makes plans God has a purpose and his promises will be fulfilled. For more information on the condition of the DEAD. Go to jw.org. there you will find true answers God's purpose for mankind. Everyone has lost someone they love deeply and is very unnatural to outlive your children. And to have an Unexpected death like Marcello and his dear family loss. What?! What is that pause at the end of the aria?! It's one of the most horrible things I ever listen in an opera.
@davide11437 жыл бұрын
LordoftheTrapdoors The pause at the end of the aria announces the death of Giacomo Puccini, in fact, this was the last aria he wrote for this opera. Turandot was completed by Maestro Gozzi and some conductors like to remark it by pausing the show at the very last note Puccini wrote
@CupidonetPsyche7 жыл бұрын
That's all wrong. The pause is to allow the audience to applaud, even though the music Puccini wrote flows continuously into the next scene. If the audience applauds over it, which they always will, you can't hear the wonderful transition, and the next scene starts off badly. If you pause, you ruin the moment. Ideally, audiences would not applaud here, but that's not going to happen. Puccini set the text and finished the orchestration up through Liu, Liu sorgi, and the succeeding chorus. The non-Puccini material begins at Principessa di morte. The opera was completed by Franco Alfano, whose work was heavily edited by Arturo Toscanini. Puccini had wanted Riccardo Zandonai to complete the work, but this did not happen, unfortunately. As for conductors observing the death of Puccini, there is one famous instance of it, which was the world premiere in 1926, when Toscanini ended the opera with the death of Liu. I've never heard of it happening since (although that doesn't mean it hasn't happened, of course).

Annoying when subtitlers invent their own translations, as happens here. Almost every line is wrong, from the very first. Slumber ( instead of sleep), lonely chamber (cold chamber) stars tremble with longing (with hope), secret lies in my heart (secret is closed within me), press it to your lips (on your lips I'll tell it), amid the blazing light of dawn ( when the light shines), that kiss will end my silence ( my kiss will untie the silence), then you will be mine ( that will make you mine).

Wofür war der. Applaus ??????????
@DimitrisRebelYell11 жыл бұрын
He is OK but definitely not a golder era tenor, and the conductor should never have abruptly and clumsily stopped the music after his aria to "force" people to applaude him like that! Puccini seamlessly joined this to the next part with no pause like in other arias and not even Corelli was allowed such alterations....
@shadowdog197710 жыл бұрын
The audience was applauding well before the end of the aria. Seems clear it was the conductor's choice and not the singer's.

è vero - nessun dorma dal fatto che avete ucciso la vera lirica italiana. vergogna. nessun mistero - il tuo nome è Nemorino .
@davidcosta42416 жыл бұрын
If we want to speak Italian, at least let's make sure to know how to write in Italian... Arlecchino is spelt with two "c"s.. Arlecchino, not Arlechino. Then, forgetting about the poor Italian and forgetting about Arlecchino (Harlequin for our English readers or Arlequin in the langue of Moliere), we are not quite sure who would have killed the "true Italian lyric"... or indeed if it has been killed or when or how or why... it's a kind of generic, superficial old thinking that seems to belong to those who think that things were always better before... for sure we can agree that in the past there were many impressive Italian singers and these days certainly less, however the lyric world goes on and many new opera lovers are more than happy to applaud who they enjoy and want to applaud and there is not universal "vergogna" (shame) on that. Life goes on, so the Lyric, so opera lovers, so singers, so our lives. After all, opera is a form of entertainment, not the secret book of Our Lord with lyric commandments written in stone. A little more of openness and some more manners, especially towards colleagues who work hard and with passion, would be welcome and would contribute a little to make a better and more polite world, rather than trolling around anonymously. Kind regards, David Costa

He has a good voice, better than that of Kaufmann, and his higher register is very controlled and pleasant to listen to (until that final B4 which sounded sharp) unlike Domingo's. However he lacks heart, and he cannot act. Boring to watch. And like Dim Lian commented, the conductor's pausing of the orchestra after the song finished is frankly embarrassing.
