Nesting Stacking Toy

I had the idea for this nesting toy last summer when I was recording the sound of the big band saw by cutting scraps of wood. In thinking through the shapes for this toy, I realized one problem was going to be thin pieces of wood running perpendicular to the grain making the piece very fragile. I solved this by sandwiching three pieces of wood together: a piece of purple heart between two pieces of walnut with an alternating grain pattern like plywood. I made a finger jointed wood box to hold the three sections of the toy.

That's awesome filmmaking and stop motion skills combined with great craftsmanship. The best part is, the kid will be able to watch this video when he's old enough to appreciate it, and it will probably be a cherished toy he passes down.

The camera work in this is fantastic as usual, especially the close-ups. I like the clear acrylic top and bottom of the box so you can still see the wood toys.

Nice idea Frank. I especially liked the demo of how the objects may be stacked. I like the idea of toys that represent a modern architectural language like an update froebel blocks. Well done. “It’s not what the boy does to the wood, but what the wood does to the boy.”

nice idea, just proves with a little imagination you can do great things to challenge kids. just love the safety police comments. I often wonder if they have ever set foot in a workshop? don't they realise professional wood workers keep their fingers for a reason.. we know how far we can push things safely.

Hi Frank have you ever thought about using a vacumbag press for this sort of glue up? They are awesome and will apply an even pressure over any shape and are really useful for doing veneers and curved laminations. Years ago I made a laminated 6" high hard wood skirtingboard with an 8" diameter. Just remember any former used needs to be solid or the bag needs to be able to suck up underneath no voids or the former could collapse. Could even work for your segmented bowl glue ups, glue and stack put in bag suck out most of the air adjust the stack and remove the rest of the air leave to dry and hey presto a blank.
