That bit ran through my head as an obvious opportunity to "yes and" the story from the original. My idea: When Team Avatar arrives in the North Pole, the tribe throws the big party AND has a dance demonstration from the women as part of the celebration. Then Katara gets sent to learn how to heal and learns of the sexism of the tribe. The rest of the episode plays out like the original story. Have Paku say they need more fighters who can fight up close because his waterbending is only good far off. Katara retrieves the women who fight similar to the dancing at the start. They used the dance to secretly train to fight similar to the history of capoeira and are all close quarters combatants. It's not a perfect idea, but it's better than what was done

@avenger40277 ай бұрын
This isn't hubris, this is shameless exploitation. Lacking creativity (it's telling that the creators themselves walked away from this), these dumbasses butcher the source material in their naked greed, to get money out of loyal fans out of nothing - the "writers" do not even understand that the speed and choreography of bending do not translate well to live-action. Plus, in live-action format, you have to get child actors - since it's a show and not a billion-costing Hollywood production, the caliber of child actors (which are required to be "diverse", to boot) they could get for that... Is not good, either. On the slight, slight upside... We can always say that this is Ember Island Players in live-action format and not the actual show, lol.

episode 4 was a especially infuriating seeing as Aang, a master airbender, was got his butt kicked by Zuko in Hand-to-hand combat. While Aang didn't lose, its absurd that Zuko landed 2 devistating kicks on Aang, while Zuko wasn't using firebending, and Aang WAS using airbending. A complete 180 from the original episode 1 where Aang destroyed Zuko in hand to hand, WHILE Zuko used firebending.
@avenger40277 ай бұрын
@@macomonkey6969 Yeah, Aang (in original canon) had the best potential for combat, because not only airbending mastery gives a huge buff to dodging attacks, he's also the last airbender - and, as we saw with Zaheer in Legend of Korra, people in the world of ATLA could not adequately prepare themselves to fight him, because airbending had not existed for a hundred years. That's why the only people who could even hope to contend with Aang were the likes of Azula, Zuko (and, even than, it was after Zuko actually adapted to Aang's style), Bumi, etc... The best benders in the world.
@macomonkey69697 ай бұрын
@@avenger4027 the live action is just allergic to consistent world building and power scaling. I’m not gonna complain about the narrative differences because it’s supposed to be vastly different (even if it’m trash most of the time), but the world building a power scale changes literally deletes any immersion. If I see Aang flying in episode 1, then barely even able to evade someone on foot in the next episode, I’m not gonna be engaged the next time his life is in danger, because at that point the strongest force in the battle is plot armor.
@avenger40277 ай бұрын
@@macomonkey6969 Ultimately, it's just an issue of bad writing (like that moment you cited when Aang pulls a Zaheer in the first episode, yet runs in another is just ridiculous). And, to be brutally honest, most modern shows do not have any character development or actual story beats. Most things happen for no reason at all, the characters stumble through the events, always saved by the plot armor, which is never explained and always breaks even the semblance of rules established beforehand.

It feels like the love child between The Ember Island Players and the un-aired pilot for the original show, then that show-baby grew up and had it's own baby with the Shyamalan movie Basically, it feels like all the bad adaptations thrown into a blender and then put on a screen. There is, perhaps (hopefully) a light in the dark, supposedly the original creators, Avatar studios, are releasing a series showcasing the Gaang grown up (before/during the time of the comics, but before Korra) and supposedly, they're going to try and get all the original VA's back.
@dragonmaster13607 ай бұрын
Something you missed about episode 2, with the Kyoshi scene. They took Aang's avatar demonstration, his force of nature sphere from the finale, and gave it to Kyoshi. Meaning, when (if) he does it in the finale, against Ozai, it won't be "his" demonstration anymore. It'll be a copy of Kyoshi. They're taking so much away from main characters and foisting it on side characters, or just straight taking it away (especially from the males). Sokka's arc to becoming a wise leader has been knee-capped. Aang and Katara have no chemistry, and they gave the Cave of Two Lovers scene to Sokka and Katara (which feels gross), meaning Aang/Katara don't have that semi-romantic scene in season 2. They took away a lot of Zuko's rage. Uncle Iroh doesn't even feel like Iroh anymore. Ozai isn't the unsympathetic, manipulative psychopath anymore, because they made him cry when he burned Zuko. Zhao is a pathetic weakling now. Katara lost her anger and stubbornness, as well as her motherly attributes. Suki is now a creep. Azula isn't the manipulative mastermind anymore, and is now just an angsty teen living in Zuko's shadow (which goes against her original backstory, being the PRODIGAL child). Bumi is a pessimistic, angry jerk, instead of the optimistic leader he was. Jeht isn't the ruthless freedom fighter anymore, and because he isn't killing innocents to wipe out a fire nation village, there really isn't a reason/point for his redemption in Lake Laogai. They took away EVERYTHING from Roku, as Aang's spirit guide, and gave it to Kyoshi. Which, I mean... Why?! It makes zero sense. Roku is Aang's guide because he was literally the last Avatar before Aang. On top of that, the world Aang inherits is DIRECTLY Roku's fault. He was lax as an avatar, letting Sozin build power under his watch. The world state Aang has to grapple with is largely Roku's fault. It made sense for him to try making things right, by guiding Aang into how to fix stuff. But noooooooo. Gotta give it to a stronk wamens. They've destroyed practically every single character. The only one that didn't get destroyed was cabbage man.

Something I think you missed: Firebenders can use firebending to propel themselves like a rocket, but it is not nearly powerful enough for them to fly. Sozin's comet amplifies firebenders' power however, such that some of them become strong enough that they can actually fly. We see this in the finale of the original show, where during Sozin's comet, several firebenders are able to fly, like Ozai, Azula, Jeong- Jeong, Aang, and more. In the original show, Aang says only airbenders and flying bison can make it up to the southern air temple, because you need to be able to fly to get there. We are told that the raid on the air temples was during the first Sozin's comet, which alludes to the fact that firebenders used the power of the comet to fly up to the air temples. So yes, the Netflix show was right to show firebenders flying in the attack on the southern air temple, because they were empowered by Sozin's comet. This was already alluded to in the original. Because this is a once in a century event, we never see firebenders flying otherwise.

So there's actually another creator on here who is a martial artist that breaks down WHY the bending is so bad in this, and one of the main thing he says in his first video about it is that there is no distinct martial art identity that you see anymore. It's very much just *wave hands* and all of a sudden fire, or earth or whatever. I don't remember the channel name since I recently found him but you can find it. He did a really good job, and if you want to find another person who also is just frustrated then... Yeah he's another, but you know it's all valid stuff and not just for the funsies of it.

Did anyone else feel frustrated when they used Leaves from the Vine in episode 4?? I had no attachment to this version of Iroh so when that started playing that soon it came off to me like cheap fan service, the moment wasn't earned whatsoever. ALSO! I absolutely got frustrated when Zuko Fought Ozai, the whole point was that Zuko refused to fight his father. We as an audience got to see 3 Agni Kais all with Zuko against Zhao, Ozai, and Azula. Zuko spared Zhaos life and Zhao attacks him when his back is turned, Zuko refused to fight his father and Ozai attacked an opponent who wasn't fighting back, Azula attacks a bystander and Zuko jumps in and takes the hit. The whole point is the message behind it, the fights not only show Zukos character, but it also shows the audience how far the Firenation had fallen. How corrupt the Firenations idea of Honor had become. In all three fights Zuko shows great honor whereas his opponents who have "honor" show actions that are very dishonorable. It was a way for the OG creators to get the point across with absolutely beautiful subliminal storytelling

I gave it a 3.5/10 overall. The bad outweighs the good, but at least there was no Great Divide. The weird mashing up of subplots was a bit of a nightmare, especially the amount of season 2 stuff that got thrown in there, and Jeong Jeong just not being a thing at all. Tons of indigenous people have talked about how merely being unrecognized is not the only reason the SCNK tribe has been flagged as fake. Apart from the fact the three bands themselves accused this nation as fraudulent, scnk make people pay to join based on really nothing, indigenous news outlets have basically ignored ian while propping up the rest of the mative actors and prior to him taking this role ian had only previously been listed as caucasian prior to his casting and has said absolutely nothing about his native/cultural identity during interviews or any news reports. A huge contrast to basically every actor who is a person of color going out of their way to talk about the importance of representation. When this issue first came out he and netflix stayed silent and basically waited for everything to die out which obviously worked. Saying "he looks native" is also a whack thing to say because that line of thinking is most likely what let taylor lautner fly under the radar.

Another thing I've noticed about this adaptation is that it doesn't seem at all interested in exploring the "Last Airbender" part of Aang, instead choosing to entirely focus on the "cool badass avatar power" part. There's basically no focus on the idea of Aang's pain, grief and anger as a result of being the last survivor of a genocide. The fact we probably wont visit all the air temples due to skipping the Northern Air Temple feels... odd. It's telling they cut out the episode where Aang becomes enraged at seeing the legacy of his people desecrated.

I'm sorry, but I geniunely don't understand why people think this is a good change. Zuko failed to save the 41st division and he got burned for it, but in the live action Ozai changes his mind and now Zuko has... saved them??? So he succeeded? How is the audience supposed to believe that Ozai taught him a "lesson" by ultimately giving Zuko what he wanted in the first place. Someone explain to me how that makes sense, I'm genuinely asking.
@Violets_and_Madness7 ай бұрын
@lucaz02 I'm not saying it's better than the original. In the original, it's definitely more ruthless of Ozai to have Zuko know the people he tried to save still died anyways. It made him seem more like a ruthless force of evil. But in the live action, there is so little interpersonal relationships and very little character chemistry that something as small as the crew being the ones Zuko saved is refreshing and actually adds some character depth that is so severely lacking. It's like finding a nice rock in a pile of trash.
@Violets_and_Madness7 ай бұрын
@dire213 oh, fully agreed. It's no where near as good an addition as almost anything in the original, and it makes Ozai seem more like just a shitty abusive father and not a ruthless force of narcissism and megalomania. But in a show so devoid of character, personality, and depth like the live action? It's a nice change of pace. Still doesn't compare to the original.
@lucaz027 ай бұрын
@@Violets_and_Madness Alright fair enough haha. I guess it also feels kinda icky to me that when the crew finds out it was Zuko who saved them, they now have this kind of obligation to be loyal to him or respect him (because he saved them). Instead of how it was in the original, where they start to understand why Zuko is the way he is and they gain some level of true respect for him. And you're right, it definitely takes away from Ozai's ruthlessness.

I saw someone propose in the comments of another video that they could have made the show about an alternate universe where Aang *doesn’t* run away after finding out he’s the avatar and must therefore be separated from Gyatso and then expand on how that could’ve played out and honestly? Give that person a medal because I would eat that shit up. Heck, I would even go nuts over a What If? type format where every episode deviates from the original story by changing one beat and seeing where that takes us. Just stop trying to make an already perfect story better, because you can’t. Play in the sandbox, but don’t recreate someone else’s castle. I feel the same way about pretty much everything you’ve said, just wanted clarify though about the attack on the air bender temple, there is a theory that I subscribe to that fire benders used their bending to fly up to the temple. They can’t do this normally so they would only be able to do this during the comet. Ozai does this effortlessly in the finale when he juiced up by the comet. The tanks used in the mechanist episode appear to be knew as it catches every one off guard so there would be no other way for the fire benders to launch an attack on the temples. But my biggest complaint is that the comet powered fire bending doesn’t look powerful when they should be doing insane feats of bending

Even Zuke learns compassion from time to time. No one is born perfect or woke and many cultures and people are different. Its sad and ironic that the kids cartoon takes a more realistic approach to world that they continue work and improve the world. While modern movies just pretend it doesn't exist, all problems are solved. Its no wonder people have no idea how to actually tackle these issues when they don't even try to learn, be open and understanding, we just condemn and sweep stuff under rug.

Dan Lin is listed as one of the executive producers of netflix’s avatar but he was also the head of the studio that made this adaption with the help of Albert Kim’s studio. He’s also now the new film chief of Netflix and his main mantra is making movies that are “fewer” and “cheaper”. Seasons 7 and 6 had a few good scenes in a sea of bad writing. Season 5 was mostly boring..sounds familiar.

42:23 Episode 3 was the only decent one. I thought I'd hate it the most because of how they restructured so MANY different episodes, but in fact it was a whole new story that DID feel like ATLA, just not the one I already watched. If the whole series had been like this episode, I think people would have really enjoyed it. I think I would have. I know I'd like it better than the Frankenstein's monster we got.

it was the acting and CGI that killed it for me

I liked the show! The writing definitely let us down though, mostly with the telling instead of showing and bad dialogue imo. They didn’t let the Gaang have their personalities as much. Also to add onto what you said, they decided to spend too much time on unnecessary scenes and repeating themselves when we would’ve enjoyed more time developing the character relationships. Overall I did enjoy the show though! And you can tell the actors are really passionate about it. The writers and showrunners are probably the issue haha Edit: ALSO AANG DOES NOT WATERBEND AND IT’S NOT ADDRESSED
@wolfiitachii29477 ай бұрын
They actually hinted at why he didn't even try waterbending in a flashback. Aang said he had to learn to controle his power and we saw him nearly blowing his friends off a mountain. So it looks like they will probably take the "I'm scared of hurting others" route...

I think Paramount was waiting for them to be done with helping Netflix and were going to do this anyway. But the fact that they left AND we got Avatar Studios is fantastic. I’m not rooting for the Netflix’s demise or anything, I just think that it’s something that exists.

Well...the creators didn't leave to make their own studio because the writing was so bad, they left because of creative differences and Nickelodeon basically bought them a studio and OFFERED it to them, so it isnt weird to assume that part of the reason they jumped ship was also because they were given the better offer of the two (more series, movies, an entire animation studio their control, etc) and landed on creative differences being the main draw, despite the fact the LA was already in production and they wrote the 1st episode script already.

So Ian Ousley didn't lie. The situation with identifying native American tribes is just murky. That's what I got from your summary of the situation. In any case, after seeing him in interviews, I think he was a good fit, just not given the best script.

It’s crazy how the same people talking all about representation, will deny someone representation because, their twitter background check found he’s not registered with the right people. Like he’s a dog that’s not registered with the AKC, so he’s not “pure” enough.

He did lie. It's not murky. The tribe he's registered in has been called out by the Cherokee Nation themslef as fake. Hope this helps.

At first I was like it was great and so accurate but now I realise it was just straight to the point .They literally removed sokka sexicism but in the original it's his whole personality at first. Aang was visually good but I wish he had more personality to him.He wasn't goofy and funny .The only combo doing it for me was zuko and uncle iroh.I personally realised that the live action scrip wasn't well written 😕. It's a 7/10

yeah i understand i real didn’t like it the only thing i like from the live action is the actors actually look like their characters but i hate how they act like they out of character and the writers aren’t giving them a change smh. 😒
