Ultraman of all things! Being an incredibly historic IP from 1960s Japan, now, there is to be a new western adaptation, animated and all. And admittedly, I'm not too knowledgeable on the Tokusatsu genre. But come join a new fan's brief history of Ultraman, and the history of Netflix's animation antics in recent years. Potentially being the introducing of Ultraman to a new audience, while switching up the typical Ultraman tropes, this is looking to be an interesting example of a project. So some join me as we dissect animation within Netflix. As now that we're after The Avatar Last Airbender Live Action wave, THIS Is Netflix's Next Animation Project...

Ultraman is an alien that shares a bond with a human who was dying. After they become bonded, they can interchange between each other's physical forms, although Ultraman himself can not stay on Earth for too long. The human can summon Ultraman with a sort of remote device. I watched the first season of the original show, and it's funny and campy, but I love it.

Yeah, but not every Ultra is bonded with a human. For example, Ultra Seven, the Ultra, who was the lead after the original, takes on the form of a human but never merges with one.

Netflix made many mistakes during there existence - increasing the prices on their plans multiple times - cracking down on password sharing which they ignored their "Love is sharing a password" tweet from March 2017 - released some of their most controversial content (Cuties, the "13 Reasons Why" season 1 finale scene related to suicide, and Netflix's Cleopatra) - locking some useful features like 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos behind the $22.99/month Premium plan - and favoring Quantity over Quality which resulted in losing most of their subscribers in the 2020s.

The Hanna Barbera project was supposed to be a pilot for a weekly Saturday morning action show but NBC decided not to air it and made it a TV movie. The project was approved by Noboru Tsuburaya, Eiji Tsuburaya’s son who served as an executive producer alongside Bill and Joe. There was quite a lot of talent behind it. A pre-Batman TAS Andrea Romano was the voice director, Iwao Takemoto of Scooby Doo fame was a creative designer and the GOAT himself: creature designer, future film director and creator of GARO Keita Amemiya made the evil monster designs. There is a happy ending though, Ultraman Chuck, Scott and Ultrawoman Beth would receive live action costume counterparts and participate in the greater Ultraman franchise every now and then, ensuring that they are never forgotten.

6:05 correction, Ultra Q was Ultraman's precursor show, it was basically (like you said) a twilight zone-esque mini series where each episode revolves around a mysterious kaiju or seijin (alien) Ultraman himself debuted in his title show, Ultraman, duhh Interestingly though is that Kaiju from Ultra Q would later go on to be used in some Ultraman episodes, notably Gomess, Pagos and Peguila Another interesting thing is that Ultraman's title card starts of swirling in a title card spelling out Ultra Q, before it bursts out in red with a new title card saying Ultraman, possibly hinting that they both take place in the same universe This fun title card detail was also referenced in Shin Ultraman, with the title swirling in spelling out Shin Godzilla (being Hideaki Anno's previous movie) before once again bursting out in red spelling out Shin Ultraman Edit: also i DID NOT KNOW KEZZA HENSHIN WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND!!!! THAT'S SO CUTEEE

As someone who recently got into the Ultra series and started with the first Ultraman, (and hasn’t watched Shin Ultraman yet but has seen some clips of it online) I can say that it seems that Shin Ultraman has the same style as the original series, with its wacky but charming effects, but expands on the themes of the original in more depth. It’s not required viewing but check the first show out in any way you can. Also this Netflix movie isn’t the first time that an official American made Ultra project was made. Back in the 90’s, Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero (or Ultraman Powered as it was called in Japan) was the first and only live action Ultra show made in America (however it was not the first time the Ultra series which was made for the English speaking market, as a few years earlier, they collaborated with an Australian studio for Ultraman: Towards the Future). The show was basically a remake of the original series but for an American audience. I watched it and while I would say that I would recommend it to anyone just getting into the series but doesn’t want to read subtitles, however as a lot of people already said, it’s not very good. The human scenes give off the same vibes as the added American scenes in the first Power Rangers, which, as someone who watched the first half of the first season of Power Rangers, I don’t mind, I mean, it did come out around the same time, however the fight scenes are just so low energy. First of all, the designs of Ultraman Powered and the Kaiju are good, they are solid reimaginings of the original series’ monsters, however, they were apparently too good, due to the way they were made, they couldn’t withstand any of the rough housing that the originals could, and the show was expected to air on American television, which meant that Ultraman couldn’t throw any punches for some reason, the result was that most fights in the show are just Ultraman lightly shoving the monsters, with the occasional flip every so often, and a beam attack to finish them off. Needless to say, it didn’t do well, so much so that it didn’t even air in America, yeah, its target audience didn’t even get to see it, oof. Powered himself did appear again in several crossover films with other Ultra’s that I haven’t seen yet, but from the from the few clips I have seen, his appearance is actually pretty good, his fights have a lot more energy to them, and they even kept some of his fighting style in, adapting his light shoves into more of an open palm strike. It’s wild that people still accept Powered even if his show sucks. Anyway, hopefully this Movie will be good.

@thechonkbrothers2267
@thechonkbrothers2267 2 ай бұрын
@@ablosch2452 yeah, that one was an adaptation of a manga that I haven’t read. It’s kinda neat how it’s set in a timeline where no other ultras appeared after the original, similar to the Heisei Ultraseven series which I also haven’t seen yet, (I need to finish the original Ultraseven) but I have no strong feelings about it either way. I feel like nothing new is really done with the concept of scaling down the kaiju action to a more human size, and it just doesn’t feel like Ultraman. The reason I didn’t cover it in my original comment is that it isn’t an American production, It’s a Netflix original anime that just so happens to have an English dub. I only watched the first two seasons, but maybe I’ll get around to watching its final season once I watch more Ultra series’s. Edit: I finally finished both Ultraseven, and the Netflix anime. My opinions on the anime remain mostly unchanged, but I can say that Ultraseven is indeed peak Tokusatsu. Dare I say, it’s even… BASED. Haven’t watched Ultraman: Rising yet, but I will when I have the time.

Eiji Tsuburaya was the sfx artist behind the creation of Godzilla. Toho even supported the Ultraman series for years and made their own similar show. Ultraman has deeply embedded himself across all forms of Japanese pop culture even in video games like Pokemon. The series just had a really poor distribution history in English speaking Western countries. There's a host of other reasons but I'll end it by saying the costumed performances are the highest barrier of entry and that's why they continue pushing all these animated versions and the Marvel comic book here.

The great thing is, Tsubaraya has recently been putting up a shit ton of seasons for free on KZbin to watch! Ooh damn nice, Kezza’s boyfriend! She makes some good stuff. Just watched Ultraman: Rising, it’s pretty good. Has its own unique identity but still fits very in line with the Ultraman ideas. Well worth the watch. I’m sure that Kezza can tell you Ultraman’s got a bit more Western reach than just this film and the Hana Barbara movie, but yeah, it’s still pretty niche.

Ultraman Rising looks really interesting an fun, the monster from the trailer looks like a monster from the first episode of Ultraman Tiga, the series that revived the franchise. And Ultraman Rising takes a lot of stuff from the originals, the sounds, the plot, and even the Ultraman himself looks more like Ultraman Powered than Ultraman

My parents gave me several seasons of the 60s series when I was a kid, and have loved Ultraman ever since. The English dub of the 60s series is hilarious, as well as the production limitations the show ran into because the concept was so ambitious. I recommend the Ultraman Mebius series for anyone new to Ultraman as that is the most definitive Ultraman experience in regards to story, production value, and characters imo

I kinda wish this was getting a theatrical release with tons of marketing. Also, I feel like Tokusatsu is getting more popular slowly little by little from Kamen Rider to Super Sentai to Ultraman. It's very exciting. Also, fuck Power Rangers it screwed up the distribution for all these shows.

Ultraman and Godzilla built the Tokusatsu genre with their giant hands. Without them, Super Sentai, Power Rangers, and Kamen Rider would look very different.

I'm aware of this, and as a massive kaiju and Tokusatsu fan, I can't wait. Yes, it's very different from what Ultraman usually is, but I'm ok with that. If Godzilla can be an eldritch behemoth, why can't Ultraman be a father to a kaiju? By the way, I'd highly recommend watching some Ultraman shows, they're really good. If you want any recommendations for which ones: the original Ultraman from 1966, Ultraman Tiga from 1996, and Ultraman Blazar from 2023.
